Biden’s peace plan, Faiza Shaheen’s deselection & festival boycotts

Biden’s peace plan, Faiza Shaheen’s deselection & festival boycotts

As the election campaign ramps up, Labour have got themselves into hot water over the deselection of candidate Faiza Shaheen. Is Labour guilty of double standards on antisemitism and Islamophobia in the party, and is there a cynical attempt to weaponise racism for factional political purposes?
Sayeeda and David discuss Biden’s ceasefire plan and whether it’s what Israel and Hamas really want.
Hay Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival and Cheltenham Literature Festival have all cut ties with their sponsor over links to the fossil fuel industry and alleged links to Israel. Has this been an effective strategy in the cultural fight against Israel or is the boycott bonkers?

The Muslim vote, Rafah despair and graffitied cinemas

The Muslim vote, Rafah despair and graffitied cinemas

A General Election has been called, and David & Sayeeda discuss the Muslim vote and whether Gaza will be top of the agenda for voters, and whether the election campaign will be dominated by divisive rhetoric.
David & Sayeeda then reflect on the terrible images that have been coming out of Rafah this week, as well as the screening of a documentary about the horrors of October 7th which led to accusations of 'artwashing' and violent protests in East Finchley, North London. But what were the protests about and how have the far right somehow managed to co-opt them again?
Also Spain, Norway and Ireland have recognised the state of Palestine. It is high time the UK followed suit?

A new Jew and the ICC arrest warrants

A new Jew and the ICC arrest warrants

David’s away, so Sayeeda is joined by journalist and new Jew for the week Hugo Rifkind. They discuss Hugo's Scottish Jewishness, Jews as an ethnic minority and those against multiculturalism, as well as the International Criminal Court’s recent application for arrest warrants for the Israeli PM, defence minister and three Hamas leaders. Are war crimes inevitable in any conflict? Does Israel care how it’s viewed on the world stage? And Sayeeda tests Hugo’s Scottish-Yiddish.

Israel & Pakistan, Netanyahu & Modi and the not so divine madness of Christian Zionism

Israel & Pakistan, Netanyahu & Modi and the not so divine madness of Christian Zionism

With David in India and Sayeeda heading to Pakistan, they discuss India’s ongoing elections and what they mean for the country's 200 million Muslims. They ask whether Modi and Netanyahu are kindred spirits, and look at Pakistan and Israel’s surprisingly similar history.
After that, they tackle Christian Zionism in the US and how it influences Trump and politics worldwide.

Alaskantheo ,

Good job Sayeeda

Christianity has a number f “flavors”. Some are more tolerant of those who leave the faith than others. Catholics for instance will refer them to themselves as a lapsed Catholic or a “survivor of Catholic Church” Some denominations have no tolerance for someone leaving and they banish those people. Their families are not allowed to have any contact with them. Jehova Witnesses are like that. Mormons used to be like that and conservative Mormons still are.
Mormons are a denomination with some very idiosyncratic beliefs and practices. The Book of Mormon is the name of their Bible. The musical pokes fun at Mormonism more than Christianity. I would encourage you to Google the Mormon Faith.
One more point; the Jewish faith has a tradition of atheism and makes space for that. I am not sure any other faith does that.
As for myself I define myself as Polish Catholic Jew. I did not convert. I was raised a Polish Catholic who at the age of 65 thanks to DNA testing learned that my parents were Jewish. They assumed false identities in eastern Poland in 1941 and died with their secret.

ReeinUSA ,

More glossing over than debate.

Syeeda tries her best but it’s pointless with someone like David who is not interested in talking about what is actually happening and glossies over anything that Israel does. The discussion on what is classified as occupation was a joke. If you are looking for meaningful, accurate discussion, give this a miss.

Awesome podcast

Really appreciate this discussion…. I notice that David is much more willing to listen and process all sides … Sayeeda seems more on a soapbox without actually responding to specific points that David is asking about. A little frustrating that she grinds her heels and misses the chance to listen and learn along with us. I hope this dynamic changes over time.
