The Book of Zechariah Explained—Prophecy, Hermeneutics, & Jesus

What does the Book of Zechariah teach us about suffering, restoration, prophecy, and the coming of Jesus Christ? In this lesson, we walk through Zechariah 9–14 and examine its message to God's people as they waited for restoration after the exile. Zechariah's prophecy points God's people toward a future shepherd king from the line of David. Israel would experience suffering and disappointment, but God's promises had not failed. Ultimately, God's people would experience victory through the King God would provide—and that promise finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. We also spend significant time discussing how to interpret biblical prophecy. Why should we first understand Zechariah in its original historical setting before looking at its fulfillment in Christ? How should we understand Old Testament promises in light of the New Testament? And how does the "already and not yet" nature of Christ's kingdom help us understand what Jesus has accomplished, what is true for believers now, and what awaits us at His return? This lesson explores: • Zechariah's message of future trials and restoration• The suffering and restoration of God's people• The promised shepherd king from David's line• Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament promises• The inauguration, continuation, and consummation of Christ's kingdom• The "already and not yet" kingdom of God• How Christians should understand Old Testament prophecy• Why believers should expect suffering in this present age• The believer's victory at death and the future resurrection• God's sovereignty, human responsibility, and His knowledge of all things If you want to understand the Bible more clearly—especially Old Testament prophecy and how it points to Jesus Christ—this lesson will give you a framework for reading Zechariah and other prophetic books more faithfully. Scripture: Zechariah 9–14Subject: Zechariah, biblical prophecy, Christ, the kingdom of God, restoration, hermeneutics, and the Old Testament's fulfillment in Jesus Christ. How Haggai Points to Jesus - Zerubbabel, the Temple, & the Son of David

What does Zerubbabel have to do with Jesus? Why does the Book of Haggai end with a promise to a Davidic ruler? And why shouldn't Christians expect a future rebuilt temple in Jerusalem? In this Bible study, we examine the closing verses of Haggai and discover how Zerubbabel points forward to Jesus Christ—the true Son of David, the eternal King, and the One who fulfills God's promises. We also explore how the New Testament identifies the Church—not a future stone temple—as God's dwelling place. If you're interested in Reformed theology, covenant theology, Presbyterian teaching, biblical theology, or learning how the Old Testament points to Christ, this lesson will help you read Haggai the way the apostles did.
