Has AI Finally Cracked the Voynich Manuscript?

Has AI Finally Cracked the Voynich Manuscript? Has the Voynich Manuscript finally been decoded, or can artificial intelligence solve what human cryptographers couldn’t? The Voynich Manuscript, also known as Yale Beinecke MS 408, is one of history’s most famous undeciphered manuscripts. Dating to the early 15th century, its pages contain an unknown script often called Voynichese, alongside mysterious plants, astronomical and astrological diagrams, strange bathing figures, and illustrations whose meanings remain uncertain. For more than a century, linguists, historians, cryptographers, professional codebreakers, and computer scientists have tried to decipher it. Even legendary cryptanalysts such as William F. Friedman and John Tiltman investigated the manuscript. Researchers have discovered intriguing patterns in its text, including Currier Languages A and B, unusual word structures, and statistical behavior resembling Zipf’s Law—a pattern commonly associated with human language. Now, AI and machine learning offer new ways to analyze those patterns. But can AI actually translate the Voynich Manuscript? Or is recognizing patterns very different from understanding what they mean? In this episode of LilWeird, we trace the attempts to crack the Voynich code. From human codebreakers and early computer analysis to computational linguistics and modern artificial intelligence, we explore one of the biggest problems facing anyone who claims to have solved it: How do you prove a Voynich Manuscript translation is actually correct? And if AI does eventually find the answer, how will we know that it got it right? Explore more strange history, mysteries, folklore, and researched oddities from the LilWeird Universe. If this episode sparked your curiosity, made you feel a little more enchanted, or reminded you of the stories hiding in plain sight—I’d love for you to stay connected with the LilWeird Universe. The Whispering Sky: Fear, Memory, and Inuit Cosmology

What happens when the sky is not merely something you observe—but something that appears to listen? In this episode, we will travel beneath the Arctic sky through accounts of Inuit astronomy, cosmology, and star lore. Drawing primarily from the memories of Iglulingmiut elders preserved in John MacDonald’s The Arctic Sky, we encounter stars that measure time, guide travellers, carry old stories, and may even open into other worlds. We also return to a childhood warning: never whistle at the northern lights. The aurora might hear you, move closer, or answer your call. But this is not simply a collection of eerie beliefs. Behind the moving lights, celestial hunters, and whispered warnings lies a deeper relationship with an environment powerful enough to guide, sustain, or end a human life. Through Aua’s haunting statement—“We do not believe. We fear”—and the expansive concept of Sila, fear begins to reveal itself as attention: the discipline of watching, remembering, and knowing how to live within forces larger than ourselves. And when the conditions for passing that knowledge begin to disappear, what happens to the names written across the sky? Perhaps the stars are still waiting to hear whether we remember them. If this episode sparked your curiosity, made you feel a little more enchanted, or reminded you of the stories hiding in plain sight—I’d love for you to stay connected with the LilWeird Universe. Chankillo: The Thirteen Towers That Told Time.

Eight months later, LilWeird is back. For the return episode, we’re traveling to the coastal desert of Peru to explore Chankillo — an ancient ceremonial complex best known for its mysterious line of thirteen towers. Built more than 2,000 years ago, Chankillo may have functioned as one of the earliest known solar observatories in the Americas. From specific observation points, the rising and setting Sun appears to move along the row of towers throughout the year, creating a remarkably precise way of tracking the seasons. But Chankillo is more than an ancient calendar. Who built it? Why was observing the Sun so important? And what does this strange landscape tell us about the relationship between astronomy, ritual, power, and the way human beings have always tried to make sense of time? In this episode, we wander through the archaeology of Chankillo, the meaning behind its thirteen towers, and the fascinating possibility that people were reading the year directly from the horizon long before modern clocks and calendars existed. And somewhere along the way, this ancient way of watching time pass becomes a little more personal. Because after eight months away, maybe returning isn’t about recovering lost time. Maybe it’s simply about looking at where the Sun is now — and beginning again from there. 🌌 Welcome back to LilWeird. Season 3 Episode Teaser

After an eight-month pause, LilWeird is back. This season, we’re looking up, digging into the past, and following the strange traces people leave behind when they try to make sense of things bigger than themselves. Across ancient landscapes, dark skies, forgotten histories, folklore, rituals, and unexplained stories, we’ll explore the places where curiosity, belief, history, and mystery begin to overlap. Season 3 moves between archaeoastronomy, historical investigations, and trickster legends before the return of 12 Weird Nights. Some stories may lead us to answers. Others may only leave us with better questions. And some might make the world feel just a little weirder than it did before. Welcome back, curious minds. Season 3 begins here. 12 Weird Nights - Night 11 – Why Time Feels Weird Sometimes

(00:00:00) 12 Weird Nights - Night 11 – Why Time Feels Weird Sometimes (00:03:09) Part 1 - When Time Actually Breaks (According to Physics) (00:06:04) PART 2 — When Time Feels Weird (The Brain’s Version of Reality) (00:09:18) PART 3 — When We Let Time Break (Flow, Focus, and Altered States) (00:12:13) PART 4 — Places Where Time Feels… Thin (00:15:40) PART 5 — Time Slips: Stories That Refuse to Stay in the Past (00:19:05) PART 6 — The Mandela Effect: When Memory Slips Together (00:21:24) PART 7 — What We’re Actually Seeing When Time Feels Unstable (00:23:26) Outro Why does time sometimes feel like it’s speeding up, slowing down, or skipping altogether? In Episode 11 of 12 Weird Nights, we explore the strange moments when time feels unstable and why that feeling isn’t just in your head. From real physics that prove time can bend, to the brain’s habit of quietly editing reality, this episode unpacks why our experience of time is far more flexible than we’re taught to believe. We’ll talk about time dilation, perception glitches, flow states, disorienting places, and the stories people tell when time feels off without turning it into science fiction or fear. Just curiosity, context, and a deeper look at how reality is experienced rather than measured. This episode also lands at a fitting moment: a season-ender mini-series unfolding right at the start of a new year. An ending inside a beginning and a reminder that time doesn’t just move forward. It stretches, bends, and sometimes hesitates. In this episode, we explore: Why time isn’t constant according to physicsHow speed and gravity can slow time downWhy the brain doesn’t experience time as a single “clock”Common time distortions like the stopped-clock illusionHow flow states, focus, and altered awareness affect timeWhy certain places feel disorienting or “off”Time slip stories and why they persist without physical proofHow shared memory and storytelling shape our sense of the pastThe difference between physical, perceptual, and cultural time distortions This episode is part of 12 Weird Nights, a mini-series designed for late-night listening, quiet curiosity, and questions that don’t always need answers. 12 Weird Nights - Night 9 – The Night of Lost Libraries

What happens when the world’s knowledge disappears? From the clay tablets of Nineveh to the scrolls of Alexandria, and from the manuscripts of Nalanda to the burned codices of the Maya, this episode explores the fascinating, and tragic history of lost libraries. We dive into the paradox of preservation, where fire sometimes saves what it seeks to destroy, the human stories of librarians who risked everything to protect knowledge, and the looming threat of a modern Digital Dark Age where our digital treasures may vanish without a trace. Join me as we journey through the ashes of memory, uncovering the fragile thread that connects us to the past and asking the quiet question: what knowledge are we letting disappear today? In this episode: Nineveh & Ashurbanipal’s Library: How fire baked clay tablets into permanence, preserving 2,500-year-old wisdom. The Great Library of Alexandria: Three phases of destruction, lost scientific discoveries, and the human cost of attrition. Nalanda & the Maya Codices: When libraries became targets of war and colonial erasure, and only fragments survive today. Modern Ashes: The deliberate destruction of libraries in WWII, including Leuven and Warsaw, and their haunting memorials. The Heroes of Preservation: Librarians in Timbuktu and Sarajevo who risked their lives to save centuries of knowledge. Technology as the New Scribe: AI and imaging resurrecting burned scrolls, and the looming threat of the Digital Dark Age. Why listen: This episode isn’t just about books—it’s about memory, culture, and the human drive to preserve stories against time, fire, and indifference. Something to ponder: "Knowledge is fragile. It survives not by walls, but by people who care."
