In this episode of The Button List, we delve into the Affair of the Diamond Necklace, a scandalous conspiracy that shook the French monarchy in the late 18th century. At the center of the plot was an extravagant diamond necklace, a desperate cardinal, a cunning swindler, and a queen whose reputation would be permanently damaged. We’ll explore how Jeanne de la Motte, a crafty noblewoman, deceived Cardinal de Rohan into believing that Queen Marie Antoinette secretly desired the necklace—only for Jeanne to steal it for herself. Through forged letters, an imposter queen, and an elaborate web of lies, this scheme became one of the most sensational scandals of the era. Though Marie Antoinette was innocent, the affair fueled public outrage and cemented her image as a symbol of royal indulgence. With France teetering on the edge of revolution, the scandal dealt a devastating blow to the monarchy’s already fragile reputation. Join us as we unravel this tale of greed, betrayal, and deception, and reveal the lasting impact it had on France's history—and why you should always take partial payment upfront, no matter how wealthy your clients may be. The Hope Diamond, Part I

For Part I of the Hope Diamond's episode, we break down the fascinating facts about the world-renowned Hope Diamond, leaving all the myths and tea for part two. Known for its deep blue color, the Hope Diamond weighs 45.52 carats and originated from the Kollur mine in Golconda, India. Discovered in the 17th century, it was initially a larger stone weighing 112 carats, known as the Tavernier Blue. The diamond's journey took a royal turn when it was sold to King Louis XIV of France in 1668 and became part of the French Crown Jewels. After being re-cut, it became known as the French Blue, weighing 67.125 carats.  By 1839, the diamond appeared in the possession of British banker and gem collector Henry Philip Hope, from whom it gets its current name. The diamond was re-cut again into its present form to enhance its brilliance, resulting in the 45.52-carat gem we know today. Its stunning blue color is due to trace amounts of boron within the diamond. Throughout its history, it has been owned by notable figures such as Louis XIV, King George IV of the United Kingdom, and the Hope family. So join us as we delve into the true history of the Hope Diamond, exploring its origins, transformations, and illustrious ownership. And why, once again, stealing diamonds from religious figures is never a good option. A Tale of Three Pearls

Welcome to a Tale of Three Pearls, where in this episode we will be diving deep into the intriguing tales of three famous pearls: La Peregrina, La Pelegrina, and the Tudor Pearl. We will try to unravel the mysteries and explore why these pearls have often been confused throughout history. First, we start with the La Peregrina, a pear-shaped pearl of remarkable size and beauty. With a recorded history spanning nearly 500 years, La Peregrina has adorned queens and noblewomen, serving as a pendant to brooches, necklaces, and even hat ornaments. Yet, its journey has been shadowed in confusion, often mistaken for another pearl bearing a similar name. Enter La Pelegrina, another pearl steeped in royal splendor but distinct from its namesake, La Peregrina with just a slight difference phonetically. Gifted by King Philip IV of Spain to his daughter on her marriage to King Louis XIV of France in 1660, this pearl's origins trace back to the pearl-rich shores of the New World. Its weight, significantly less than La Peregrina, sets it apart, yet its name and history intertwine with its counterpart, perpetuating the confusion among gem historians. And at last, comes the Tudor Pearl, known for its association with the Tudor monarchs of England during the 16th century. We delve into its regal history, its significance in Tudor jewelry, and its role within the Crown Jewels of England.  Throughout our podcast, we'll unravel the threads connecting these pearls, examining why they continue to be mistaken and conflated across centuries. From their origins in different continents to their roles in royal courts, each pearl tells a unique story of opulence, intrigue, and the enduring allure of these precious gems.
