"Nowhere to Go": Jean Yang on the Hidden Healthcare Crisis, Human Survival & What Happens If the Safety Net Fails

"When life trauma strikes, people cannot just knock on a door and magically recover. Recovery requires human connection, targeted support, and a society that refuses to let people fall through the cracks. But right now, that entire safety net is under direct threat." In this candid, high-stakes conversation on ¿Qué Pasa Boston?, executive producer and host Gabriela Salas sits down with Jean Yang, CEO of Vinfen, to pull back the curtain on one of the most pressing yet overlooked crises across Massachusetts: the breaking point of community mental health, behavioral care, and disability support systems. From arriving in the United States over 30 years ago as a first-generation immigrant from China to graduating from Harvard and leading an organization with 3,500 staff across 500 sites serving 10,000+ individuals, Jean brings an unflinching perspective on what it takes to protect the frontline. Together, Gabriela and Jean tackle the hard truths that impact every family, taxpayer, and neighborhood: The Invisible Reality of Community Care: How residential group homes provide dignity, independence, and life skills for adults with intellectual disabilities, brain injuries, and severe mental illness. The Cultural Trust Gap: Why minority, Black, Brown, and immigrant families suffer disproportionately from behavioral health stigmas and the critical shortage of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking providers. The Workforce Emergency: The true cost of 20% vacancy and turnover rates on the frontlines when state reimbursement wages cannot compete with the commercial market. Question 5 & The State Budget Threat: Why Question 5 on the Massachusetts ballot could trigger tens of millions in tax rebates out of state reserves during revenue shortfalls—and how that directly threatens life-saving safety-net services. Modernizing Care Without Losing Humanity: The launch of Lowell's Middlesex County Restoration Center, creating 24/7 "no wrong door" diversion for mental health and substance crises. Whether you have a family member relying on behavioral care or care about the health and economic future of Massachusetts, this episode is an essential guide to the decisions shaping our communities. John Deaton "Abolish Ice is Just a Slogan"

"What separates people is not politics. It is life experience. I do not care how much money you make or if you think you are a big shot lawyer. Listening to your mother cry herself to sleep because she could not feed you lives inside you forever." In one of the most vulnerable and personal conversations recorded on Que Pasa Boston, executive producer and host Gabriela Salas sits down with trial attorney and US Senate candidate John Deaton.John does not speak like a rehearsed politician because he is not one. From surviving childhood sexual abuse and severe urban poverty to serving in the US Marine Corps and taking on federal regulatory agencies like the SEC pro bono for everyday retail investors, Deaton breaks down why career politicians on both sides continue to fail working families. In this unfiltered episode, Gabriela and John confront the most urgent crises facing Massachusetts and everyday families: The Broken Immigration System: Why both political parties use immigrants for fundraising rather than creating a permanent, legal pathway for law-abiding families.ICE in Our Communities: The psychological toll of deportation fears in immigrant neighborhoods like Lawrence, Lowell, and New Bedford, and Johns pragmatic reform model. The Housing and Energy Nightmare: Why starter homes now cost over 600,000 dollars, how utility mandates are halting construction, and actionable plans to build 5 million homes. The Crypto Reality Check: Calling out the Trump and Melania meme coins as garbage, while explaining how genuine blockchain technology and stablecoins protect everyday retail wealth and the US dollar. Whether you agree with his politics or not, this conversation provides a raw look at resilience, accountability, and the struggle of working families. 0:00 Introduction: Gabriela Salas welcomes Senate candidate John Deaton 01:10 Why Are American Citizens in Massachusetts Afraid to Go to Dinner? 03:40 The Real Reason Career Politicians Refuse to Fix Immigration 06:05 Ronald Reagan, TPS, and the Path to Permanent Legal Status 09:15 Abolish ICE vs Real Accountability: Training, Body Cams, and Common Sense 13:50 The 600,000 Dollar Starter Home: Solving Massachusetts Housing and Energy Crisis 17:45 Nuclear Energy, Natural Gas, and Lowering Utility Bills 21:10 Suing the SEC Pro Bono: Why John Fought for Everyday Crypto Investors 24:30 Unfiltered: Calling Out Trumps Meme Coins as Garbage 27:15 The Raw Truth: Childhood Trauma, Sexual Abuse, and Poverty 31:40 The Cost of Survival: Why Single Mothers Are Struggling More Than Ever 34:20 Gabrielas Final Message: Your Voice, Your Future, and Why You Must Vote ESPAÑOL Lo que separa a las personas no es la politica. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

30 Years & the Legacy That Changed College Sports

Jay Calnan, founder of Boston construction firm J. Calnan & Associates and co-founder of the nonprofit Team IMPACT, joins host Gabriela Salas on ¿Qué Pasa Boston? to share how children with serious illnesses become members of college sports teams, and how he built a 145-employee company from a $2,500 401(k).   What is Team IMPACT and how does it work? Team IMPACT connects children ages 5 to 15 who live with life-threatening or chronic illnesses, such as cancer, leukemia and cystic fibrosis, with a local college athletic team. The child is officially drafted onto the team for two to four years and joins games, practices, team dinners and year-end banquets. Since launching in Boston in 2011, Team IMPACT has drafted nearly 5,000 kids on more than 900 college campuses across the United States, from Division I to Division III. The program is medically based and run by child life specialists.   How can my family sign up for Team IMPACT? Any family can apply at teamimpact.org, no matter where they live, what language they speak or their background. A child life specialist will reach out to guide you through the process. You can also refer a child you know, donate, or connect your alma mater's athletic program.   How did Jay Calnan start his business? In September 1996, Jay cashed in his 401(k), bought a desk, rented a phone and opened a small office in Dorchester. Thirty years later, J. Calnan & Associates builds offices, labs and biotech facilities across Massachusetts, has been recognized by the Boston Business Journal as one of the state's top philanthropic companies for more than two decades, and still employs its very first hire.   What is Jay's advice for young entrepreneurs? Lead with purpose, not just passion. Ask how you can make an impact before asking what you get. And build relationships that benefit both sides, with your team, your clients and your community.   Chapters 00:00 Welcome to ¿Qué Pasa Boston? 01:10 Starting a company with a $2,500 401(k) 03:30 Commercial construction in Boston 04:45 Starting a business in 1996 vs. today 06:40 Gen Z, millennials and work ethic 09:40 Giving back and win-win partnerships 12:30 How Team IMPACT drafts kids onto college teams 15:40 How families and student athletes benefit 18:00 Who qualifies and how to get involved 21:00 Purpose vs. passion for young entrepreneurs 23:10 Growing up in Bristol, Connecticut, and his brother's story 27:40 How to refer a child to Team IMPACT   Mi gente, si conocen a una familia con un niño que enfrenta una enfermedad, compartan este episodio.
