Breakaway Outreach

One of the definitions of the word “breakaway” is a divergence or radical change from something established or long standing. We all need encounters that will help us breakaway from things holding us back from our fullest God-given potential in life. Oftentimes these breakaway moments begin when we are inspired by hearing someone else’s “freedom” story, impacted by a different perspective, or shaped by a newly discovered truth that changes the game for us. The aim of the Breakaway Talk podcast is to champion a living hope for every soul, in every corner—one episode at a time.

Dominican Clothes: How to Dress for the Storms of Life

What are you wearing when the storms of life come? In this episode, Jimmy sits down with longtime friend and ministry partner Pastor Pedro from the Dominican Republic for a heartfelt and practical conversation about faith, hardship, worship, prayer, grief, and learning to follow Jesus when life does not go according to plan. Using the picture of “Dominican clothes,” Pedro talks about the spiritual attitudes we need to put on—and some things we need to take off—when we face seasons of pain, uncertainty, disappointment, and loss. The conversation explores the battlefield of the mind, clothing ourselves with rejoicing, refusing to give God the leftovers of our worship, and what it means to borrow someone else’s hope when our own strength is running low—until we are able to hold hope for ourselves again. Pedro also speaks personally about walking through grief and cancer with his wife, Lydia, and what God taught him about prayer, surrender, and trusting Him when the storm becomes deeply personal. Along the way, Jimmy and Pedro talk about following Jesus into the margins, the richness of Dominican prayer culture, the different ways we define wealth, and why genuine worship must become more than something we give God for an hour on Sunday. CHAPTERS (00:00) Introducing Pedro-ology (02:43) Understanding Plantain Power (04:25) Changing into Dominican Clothes (09:35) Preparing for Life’s Storms (13:26) Following Jesus into the Margins (19:27) Dominican Prayer Culture (21:34) Different Forms of Wealth (23:23) When God Answers Prayer (28:00) Walking Through Grief and Cancer (33:32) Winning the Battle of the Mind (37:46) Clothing Ourselves with Rejoicing (42:38) Removing the Clothes of Leftover Worship (47:10) Borrowing from Someone Else’s Hope (51:28) Join Us in the Dominican Republic “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.” — Philippians 4:4 The storms will come. The question is what we will be wearing when they do—and who God may place beside us when we need help holding onto hope. From Bar Rooms to Breakthroughs: A Celebrate Recovery Story

A Celebrate Recovery Story In this heartfelt episode, Jimmy sits down with Uncle Chaz to explore a redemptive journey that began in the wreckage of addiction, family dysfunction, and brokenness. Chaz reflects on a chaotic youth marked by barroom upbringing, fights, car crashes, and run-ins with the law—years fueled by fear, shame, and insecurity. But his story takes a turn when, at 23 and on the brink of despair, he cries out to God for help. What follows is a powerful testimony of grace: a journey through recovery, redemption, and rebuilding a life on faith and accountability. Today, Chaz lives as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather—proof that even the most fractured stories can be rewritten by God’s mercy. Through honest reflection and humor, Jimmy and Chaz reveal how healing takes root when we face our pain, seek help, and allow Christ to repair what’s been broken. Their shared past becomes a story of hope for anyone trapped by shame, addiction, or generational wounds—a reminder that God specializes in turning our lowest moments into legacies of love and restoration. Sports Camps as Gospel Refuge & Germany Basketball Ministry

This episode takes you courtside with Kobie and Regi, who served in Heubach, Germany, this past summer. For eight years, Breakaway’s camp there had focused on baseball—but this summer, basketball was added for the first time, and the impact was beyond what anyone imagined. Through a unique collaboration with local schools, over 250 students—including several Ukrainian refugee youth—heard the Gospel and experienced the love of Christ through sport. Join us as we sit down with Regi and Kobie, two missional leaders whose stories embody the heart of Breakaway Outreach. Regi has spent nearly 30 years using basketball to reach youth in juvenile centers, schools, and communities across the U.S.—and this summer marked his first overseas mission. Kobie’s journey began as a 9-year-old Breakaway camper when both his parents were incarcerated; today, he’s a young leader helping others find hope through sports. Together, they share what God did in Germany, what it means to see sports become a global tool for evangelism, sports camps as a Gospel refuge, and how redemption and purpose can emerge from troubled pasts. My Father Killed My Mom: The Hard Truth About Forgiveness and Understanding the Gospel

When Jacob was 8-years-old his father shot and killed his mother and was sentenced to life in prison. By the grace of God Jacob was sent to a loving home to live with his aunt and uncle. Today, he is a missionary in South Korea. How did Jacob go from such a traumatic childhood to serving others on the other side of the world? As he shares in this episode, it was meaningful relationships at a Christian youth camp that empowered Jacob to focus on the right kind of questions, ultimately leading him down a path of redemption, healing, and the hard stuff of forgiveness. Instead of just focusing on why God allowed it to happen, Jacob began asking different questions, which changed the whole trajectory of his life. Tune in to hear the whole story!
