Ep 121 - What Questions Are You Afraid to Ask?

What Did He Mean by That? 🎙 Episode Title: What Questions Are You Afraid to Ask? 📅 Release Date: September 24th, 2026 🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney.   Episode Summary: We took the podcast out of the studio and brought it toNorthside’s Young Adult Retreat for a live Q&A. Nothing was off the table as young adults asked questions about temptation, suffering, predestination, end times, politics, modesty, Halloween, idolatry, and understanding difficult parts of Scripture. It’s an honest conversation about bringing our questions to God’s Word, wrestling with what we believe, and learning to disagree on secondary issues without losing sight of what unites us in Christ.   Questions Asked: · When temptation arises and we fail or fall, what encouragement does Scripture give us to get back up? · During hardships or valley seasons, how can we find comfort when it feels like God isn’t present in our immediate need? · What does the Bible say about election and predestination, and why is there so much debate about it? Are people predestined both to heaven and to hell? · When it comes to the end times, do you believe in a pre-tribulation or post-tribulation return of Christ? · Should Christians celebrate Halloween? · What does biblical modesty look like for both men and women? · As politics and religion become increasingly intertwined, where should politics and government fit within the broader church and at Northside? Should politics be discussed, debated, or denounced? · How can I know I’m putting God first when I spend a lot of time thinking about my personal interests? How do I know when an interest has become an idol? · When reading difficult parts of the Bible, how do I keep from becoming so focused on human sinfulness and failure that I miss what God is revealing about Himself?   Resources & Next Steps: 💒 Get Involved: Support your local church and its mission 🎧 Listen & Subscribe: Spotify | Apple Podcast | YouTube 📩 Questions or Feedback? Contact us! 🗒️ Digital Notes: Notes 🔔 Follow us on social media: Instagram | Facebook |YouTube

Ep 120 - Can You Trust God Without Knowing the Outcome?

What Did He Mean by That? 🎙 Episode Title: Can You Trust God Without Knowing the Outcome? 📅 Release Date: September 17th, 2026 🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney.   Episode Summary: What does it look like to trust God when you know He has theultimate victory, but you have no idea how your current situation will turn out? This week, we talk about finding joy and hope in the middle of suffering without pretending the pain isn’t real. From learning from the faith of others to trusting God when we can’t see what He is doing, the conversation explores how the gospel changes the way we face uncertainty, loss, and circumstances we never would have chosen.   Key Discussion Points: · What circumstance in your life is hardest for you to trust God with because you don’t know how it will turn out? · How can we distinguish trusting God from simply expecting Him to give us the outcome we want? · Have you ever looked back on a difficult season and recognized God working in a way you couldn’t see at the time?   Takeaways: 1. Knowing the Ultimate Ending Doesn’t Mean Knowing Every Outcome:We know Christ has won, but that doesn’t mean we know how every illness, financial struggle, relationship, or loss will resolve. 2. Faith Trusts God When We Can’t See What He Is Doing:Sometimes we can look back and recognize how God used a difficult season. Other times, we may never see the full purpose from our perspective. 3. God’s Good Is Not Always Our Desired Outcome:Trusting God means believing He is faithful even when His work doesn’t produce the result we were hoping for.

Ep 119 - What Is Your Joy Really Built On?

What Did He Mean by That? 🎙 Episode Title: What Is Your Joy Really Built On? 📅 Release Date: September 10th, 2026 🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney.   Episode Summary: This week we explore what it looks like to experience realjoy when our circumstances give us every reason not to. We talk about how our worldview shapes the way we respond to suffering, loss, uncertainty, and even the memories of seasons that are gone. Rather than pretending difficult circumstances don’t hurt, the conversation looks at how the gospel gives us a deeper reason for gratitude and hope. When our perspective is rooted in who God is instead of what is happening around us, our circumstances no longer have to determine our joy. Key Discussion Points: · How much does your joy depend on things going the way you hoped they would? · What circumstance in your life is currently making it difficult to see God's goodness or sovereignty? · How does a biblical view of eternity change the way Christians experience grief and loss? · Can you think of a person God has placed in your life who has been evidence of His grace to you?   Takeaways: 1. Joy Does Not Have to Rise and Fall With Your Circumstances:Paul's situation was painful, limiting, and uncertain, but his joy was anchored somewhere deeper. A gospel-shaped life can experience real grief and disappointment without allowing those circumstances to become the final word. 2. Your Worldview Shapes the Way You Experience Life:What we believe about God, suffering, death, eternity, and the purpose of life affects the way we interpret everything that happens to us. If our hope is limited to what we can see and possess now, loss can easily become despair. 3. Biblical Hope Does Not Deny Grief:The conversation about nostalgia and loss makes an important distinction: Christians still grieve. Good memories can carry sadness, and painful circumstances still hurt. But the gospel gives grief a different horizon because loss and death are not the end.

Ep 118 - Were You Created to Be Alone?

What Did He Mean by That? 🎙 Episode Title: Were You Created to Be Alone? 📅 Release Date: September 3rd, 2026 🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney.   Episode Summary: This week, we close out the Devoted series by talking about why God never designed us to follow Jesus alone. From the beginning of creation, God made us for relationship, and the church reflects that design as one body made up of many different members. We talk about the difference between unity and uniformity, why genuine community can survive disagreement and conflict, and how our differences actually strengthen the body of Christ. Ultimately, belonging to the church isn't just about having people around us. It's about being united in Jesus, loving one another through our differences, and using the gifts God has given us to serve together.   Key Discussion Points: · Where are you most tempted to isolate yourself instead of allowing other people into your life? · What’s the difference between simply being around other Christians and experiencing genuine biblical community? · Have you ever mistaken Christian unity for everyone needing to think, act, or prefer the same things?   Takeaways: 1. You Were Not Created to Be Alone Before sin entered the world, God said it was not good for man to be alone. We weren't designed to carry every burden, fight every battle, or follow Jesus in isolation. God created us for relationship. 2. Unity Does Not Mean Uniformity Biblical community doesn't require everyone to look, think, or behave exactly alike. The church is one body with many members, united around Jesus while retaining the differences that make each person uniquely able to contribute. 3. Real Community Can Survive Disagreement Christian unity isn't pretending conflict doesn't exist. Genuinerelationships allow believers to disagree, even over secondary theological, social, or political issues, while continuing to love one another as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Ep 117 - What Are You Growing in Your Life?

What Did He Mean by That? 🎙 Episode Title: What Are You Growing in Your Life? 📅 Release Date: August 27th, 2026 🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney. Episode Summary: This week, we continue the conversation about the gospel and spiritual growth by asking what it actually looks like to fight sin and become more like Christ. Using the picture of mowing over weeds instead of pulling them up by the roots, we discuss why simply trying harder to stop sinful behaviors rarely produces lasting transformation. The Christian life isn't only about what we put off; it's also about what the Holy Spirit is cultivating in its place. Along the way, we explore indwelling sin, the “already, but not yet” reality of the gospel, our dependence on the Holy Spirit, and why Scripture, prayer, church, and genuine relationships are essential means God uses to shape us into the image of Christ.   Key Discussion Points: · Why do we often concentrate more on stopping sinful behavior than becoming more like Christ? · What’s the difference between managing the outward symptoms of sin and addressing what's happening at the root? · What role does the Holy Spirit play in our ongoing sanctification? · Why do Scripture, prayer, church, accountability, and relationships matter in the process of spiritual growth?   Takeaways: 1. Don't Stop at Stopping Removing sinful behavior is important, but that's not the whole of sanctification. If we only concentrate on what we're trying not to do, we can leave empty ground where the same patterns easily grow again. Spiritual growth also means cultivating what God desires in its place. 2. The Outward Behavior May Not Be the Root Anger, lust, fear, and other visible struggles can be outward expressions of something deeper happening in the heart. Boundaries and accountability can be valuable, but lasting transformation requires more than managing symptoms. 3. The Holy Spirit Produces Real Transformation We don't dig the roots of sin out through willpower alone. The Holy Spirit works in believers through God's means of grace including Scripture, prayer, worship, the church, and Christian community to expose sin and increasingly make us like Christ.

Ep 116 - Do You Really Own Anything?

What Did He Mean by That? 🎙 Episode Title: Do You Really Own Anything? 📅 Release Date: August 20th, 2026 🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney. Episode Summary: This week, we continue our conversation about worship byasking a challenging question: do we really believe everything belongs to God? Beginning with Psalm 24, we explore the illusion of ownership and how easily our possessions, careers, circumstances, and even our sense of identity can become things we try to control and hold onto. Through the life of David, we see what it looks like to recognize God's sovereignty even when life doesn't go according to plan. Ultimately, the conversation points us back to the gospel and the freedom of knowing that even our righteousness isn't something we earn it's something we receive through faith in Christ. When we understand who God is and what He has given us, worship becomes more than singing. It becomes a life surrendered to Him.   Key Discussion Points: · What is something in your life that is easy to think of as “mine” rather than something entrusted to you by God? · How can a career, possession, relationship, or position become part of our identity without us realizing it? · Why is it sometimes difficult to trust God's sovereignty when something we value is being taken away or changed? · How does recognizing that our righteousness comes from Christ change the way we approach God?   Takeaways: 1.    Everything Belongs to God: Psalm 24 begins by establishing who owns everything: God does. Worship starts with recognizing that our possessions, positions, opportunities, and lives were never ultimately ours to begin with. 2.    What We Try to Own Can Become an Idol: Our careers, possessions, accomplishments, and circumstances can quietly become sources of identity and significance. When we begin finding in them what we're meant to find in God, we're moving toward idolatry. 3.    Knowing God Helps Us Understand Ourselves: Scripture isn't primarily a tool for discovering ourselves. As we see more clearly who God is His holiness, greatness, and sovereignty, we also begin to understand who we are and how desperately we need His grace.

Ep 115 - What’s Shaping the Rhythm of Your Life?

What Did He Mean by That? 🎙 Episode Title: What’s Shaping the Rhythm of Your Life? 📅 Release Date: August 13th, 2026 🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney. Episode Summary: What gets our attention has a way of shaping what wewant and how we live. In Episode 115, we start with a questionable pressure washer purchase and end up asking a much bigger question: What is shaping the rhythm of our lives? We talk about all the messages competing for our attention—from social media and work to fear, our past, and the opinions of others. So how do we make God’s Word the voice that shapes us most? We dig into the everyday rhythms of Scripture, prayer, biblical teaching, and Christian community, and how those rhythms help us depend on God when the pressures of life come.   Key Discussion Points: · What messages have the most consistent access to your attention right now? · Where have you seen something, you repeatedly consumed begin to shape your desires or actions? · What is the current “rhythm” of your life, and what does that rhythm suggest is most important to you?   Takeaways: 1. What stays in front of us shapes us: Messages influence our desires, and desires eventually influence our actions. That makes what we continually consume spiritually significant. 2. We need more than biblical-sounding messages: The goal is to be nourished by the truth of God’s Word, rightlyunderstood through the gospel, rather than half-truths or distorted teaching. 3. Spiritual growth involves the whole rhythm of life: Instead of making one particular sin the center of our attention, we can increasingly organize our lives around God through Scripture, prayer, worship, biblical teaching, and Christian community.

Ep 113 - Is God Getting Your Best or Your Leftovers?

What Did He Mean by That? 🎙 Episode Title: Is God Getting Your Best or Your Leftovers? 📅 Release Date: July 30th, 2026 🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney. Episode Summary: In this episode, we dive deeper into this week's messagefrom the Devoted series, exploring what true worship looks like beyond Sunday mornings. We discuss how preferences can quietly become idols, why excellence in worship matters, and what it means to offer our lives as a "living sacrifice." The conversation challenges listeners to evaluate whether God receives the first and best of their lives or simply what's left over.   Key Discussion Points: · Have your preferences ever distracted you from the purpose of worship? · What is the difference between attending church and belonging to a church? · What areas of your life are easiest to surrender to God? Which are hardest? · Does your calendar reflect that God is your highest priority? · What does it practically look like to be a contributor instead of a consumer?   Takeaways: 1.    Worship Is About God, Not Our Preferences: Everyone has opinions about music, preaching styles, and church programs, but worship isn't centered on our personal tastes. The focus is always on giving God the honor He deserves. 2.    Preferences Aren't Always Wrong: Having preferences isn't sinful. The danger comes when preferences become the primary reason we disengage, criticize, or continually jump from church to church instead of committing to a local body of believers. 3.    Worship Is a Living Sacrifice: In the Old Testament, worship centered on sacrifices. Today, because of Christ's sacrifice, believers worship by offering their entire lives to God. Worship isn't confined to songs on Sunday. It's reflected in how we organize every part of our lives.
