Pit Toilets & Potential: Why South Africa Is Failing Its Children

Can South Africa truly tackle inequality, poverty, and unemployment without first investing in its youngest citizens? In this powerful episode of the Colour-Full Podcast, hosts Senamile Zungu and Stacy Jayne Saggers sit down with Warren Povey from Breadline Africa and Debbie Zelezniak from the Santa Shoebox Project to unpack the realities facing children and Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres across South Africa. From the shocking prevalence of pit toilets in ECD centres to chronic underfunding, hunger, and transport barriers, this conversation explores why children remain the most marginalised group in society. Despite overwhelming evidence that the first five years of life are critical to lifelong outcomes, many ECD centres receive little to no government support, while those that do qualify for subsidies often receive as little as R24 per child per day. Warren and Debbie shed light on the systemic challenges within South Africa's ECD landscape, including bureaucratic hurdles that prevent centres from accessing funding, infrastructure, and essential resources. The discussion challenges us to rethink how we approach some of South Africa's biggest social challenges, arguing that meaningful change begins by investing in children from the very start. If we are serious about building a more equal, prosperous, and inclusive South Africa, we must start by putting children first. Style, Femininity & Corporate Survival: Navigating Leadership as a Woman ft. Khanyisa Phika

In this episode, hosts Senamile Zungu and Stacy Jayne Saggers sit down with Khanyisa Phika for an honest, stylish and deeply necessary conversation about women in leadership, navigating corporate spaces, fashion, ambition and the sacrifices women are often expected to make to succeed. Filmed inside the stunning Glamorizta showroom, this episode unpacks the realities of being a woman in power — from being labelled “too emotional” or “too aggressive,” to the impossible balancing act women face in leadership roles every single day. Khanyisa opens up about her journey as a Mrs South Africa semi-finalist, describing the experience as “an MBA in life” that taught her the value of putting herself out there before feeling completely ready. They explore why “women often suffer in silence,” the pressure women place on themselves to be perfect before taking opportunities, and the harsh realities of corporate culture — including Khanyisa’s experience of being reduced to admin work after becoming pregnant and the ways leadership structures often favour “the boys club.” This episode is also about joy, softness, style and sisterhood. From conversations about fashion as self-expression to the importance of building intentional communities of women you can lean on, this is a vibrant and empowering discussion about surviving — and thriving — as a modern woman.  This episode was proudly sponsored by — your go-to destination for luxury fashion, statement style and unapologetic glamour.
