Lately, whenever my baby hears the mention of God or Jesus, he says Amen. I never sat him down. I never explained it to him. Which means the teaching had already started, I just wasn't counting it. In Part 2 of this series on biblical motherhood, we study three more mothers in the Bible: the Shunammite woman, Lois and Eunice, and Mary the mother of Jesus. If you've ever wondered what does the Bible say about motherhood or what does the Bible say about mothers when you feel like you're not doing enough, then this one's for you. Missed Part 1? The first person in the entire Bible to give God a name wasn't a patriarch or a prophet. It was a pregnant runaway servant girl, alone in a desert. When I think about mothers of the bible, I always think about them as spiritual giants. Serene. Certain. Sure of every step. Nothing like me on a Tuesday afternoon with my toddler (who I still call my baby :D) on my lap, pregnant/tired, and having tons of things to do. Then I studied them. They were exhausted. Disappointed. Grieving. Some of them got it wrong. And God chose to include them in the bible anyway. Scripture is far more honest about mothers than we usually are with each other. In Part 1 of this series on biblical motherhood, we study four mothers in the Bible, Hannah, Jochebed, Hagar and Naomi, and what they teach us. There's a moment in Hannah's story where everything shifts before a single circumstance changes. There's a skill Jochebed had that most people read right past. If you've ever wondered what does the Bible say about motherhood or what does the Bible say about mothers when you're the one who feels unseen, this one's for you. Real lessons from the mothers in the Bible, for real Christian motherhood, with the Scripture right there so you can study it yourself. Next week is Part 2: the Shunammite woman, Lois and Eunice, and Mary, plus three verses about Jesus' own childhood that I now pray over my son by name.
