Is This A Great Game, Or What?

Love this podcast!! Always makes me smile and laugh. Love being part of the family. Keep up the great work

I have always loved hearing Tim’s voice calling any game, and his appearances on the Le Bastard Show with Stu Gotz are always great. This is a great podcast, and hearing this father and son duo talking about something they share a love for is priceless. My love for baseball started with my Dad, who was turned onto the game by his Dad. My Grandpa, Don Eggleton, was a pitcher during his high school career( he pitched a no hitter his senior year) and he played for the US Navy during the Korean War(he served on the USS New Jersey.) After the war, he was hired by the Oneonta Yankees to pitch against their lineup during batting practice. He was paid $20 a practice, and he always said that it was the easiest money he ever made. So the story goes, a couple of scouts came to check him out, but they said that he threw too much with his shoulder, and he would throw his arm out in the first season. He didn’t care, though. He was happy taking their money to throw gas against the team. I have been trying to find any team pictures, or even a bullpen lineup, but I can’t seem to get in touch with anyone in Oneonta. Is there there anything that you guys can do to help me find information about the team from (1955?-1965?). Also, Jeff and I have something in common…we’re both Phillies fans. My first professional baseball game was at Veteran’s Stadium. Keep on truckin’, y’all!

Being from Maryland and living in Baltimore and going to school there for HS and college, I laughed so hard listening to SVP and Tiiiiiim Kurkjian chop it up. SVP’s memories of Memorial Stadium as a kid were mine as well. He mentioned his father would take him to all those games and sit in the left field bleachers for a DH. My dad take me there to countless O’s games. He would park in the lot across from Memorial Stadium and would line his Igloo cooler with Natty Boh beers and a false styrofoam bottom so he could sneak the beers into the ballpark! Lol. The Bal’more accent is absolutely priceless for all of us who know it well. Thank you for bringing back so many great memories for me as a boy, SVP. Fun fact, as a high school pitcher I got to pitch in a travel team baseball game the summer of ‘93. The year after the O’s went to Camden Yards. The Bowie Baysox used it as their temporary home at the time. It was surreal warming up in the same bullpen as Jim Palmer and Mike Flanagan, etc. Then I pitched on the mound on what I thought was hallowed ground in front of college baseball recruiting coaches from D1 schools including Tom Walter, who was a catcher at G’town U. The same university where my father was a scholarship pitcher on the baseball team in the ‘60’s! Tom Walter was a GWU assistant coach and now is the head coach at one of the best D1 programs in the country, Wake Forest U. Most importantly, though, my dad got to see his son play on the same field and ballpark as our heroes and absolute favorite team, the Baltimore Oooooreos! Sorry for the long post, btw. 😁

Leaving this review hurts me because I LOVE Tim Kurkjian. I think he’s one of the most knowledgeable baseball analysts ever. He’s one of my favorite guests on the Tony Kornheiser podcast and that is what I’d hoped we would get from Tim’s own podcast. It is amazing how little baseball insights we get from a supposedly baseball themed podcast. The interviews are good. The stories are usually good. But, there is WAY too much time spent on “Here’s my all time list of players whose last name starts with a vowel” nonsense. Who cares about that stuff? Season previews, what players on new teams should make an impact, strike news, what teams look hot or not going into the season, thoughts about the automated strike zone, etc… is what I want to hear about. His all time list of players whose name is a fruit or vegetable is not. I’m not bailing on it yet, especially since we’re going into a new MLB season. But, if I don’t start hearing about some baseball on this baseball podcast, I’m out.
