  1. AAWTA - Johnique Taylor on the Realities of Safety, Success, and Being a Woman in Trucking

AAWTA - Johnique Taylor on the Realities of Safety, Success, and Being a Woman in Trucking

Trucking is more than driving a truck. It’s learning how to solve problems, stay safe, adapt when plans change, and make good decisions under pressure. For women entering the industry, those challenges can come with additional obstacles that aren’t always talked about openly. That’s why we sat down with Johnique Taylor, better known as the Queen of Trucking, whose career spans professional driving, logistics, dispatching, brokerage, and driver education. Her perspective comes from years of doing the work—not simply talking about it. In this episode of the African American Women in Trucking Association (AAWTA) series, Johnique shares what it really takes to build a successful career in trucking. She explains why professionalism, preparation, and confidence matter far more than stereotypes, and why every driver has the opportunity to earn respect through their actions. We also have an honest conversation about personal safety. From walking through truck stops at night to recognizing uncomfortable situations before they become dangerous, Johnique offers practical advice every driver can benefit from. She also shares a personal experience involving what could have become a human trafficking situation, reminding listeners why trusting your instincts is one of the most valuable safety tools you have. Beyond safety, we discuss mental health, work-life balance, and the importance of taking care of yourself in an industry that constantly demands your time and attention. Johnique also addresses the growing influence of social media and “YouTube University,” explaining why online content should never replace quality training, experienced mentors, and real-world experience. Finally, we explore the importance of organizations like the African American Women in Trucking Association, the value of building strong professional relationships, and why some traditional habits—like carrying a road atlas—still make sense in today’s technology-driven industry. 👇 Key Takeaways ✅ Professionalism, preparation, and consistency earn respect in trucking. ✅ Personal safety begins with awareness, planning, and trusting your instincts. ✅ Quality training and experienced mentors help prevent costly mistakes. ✅ Social media is a resource, but it should never replace hands-on experience. ✅ Mental health and self-care are essential for a long, successful trucking career. ✅ Organizations like AAWTA provide valuable support, networking, and encouragement. ✅ Always have a backup plan when technology lets you down. ✅ Stay alert to your surroundings and never ignore warning signs. ✅ Build relationships with people who want to help you grow professionally. ✅ The best drivers never stop learning. Whether you’re considering earning your CDL, already driving professionally, or simply want a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities women face in trucking, this conversation offers practical advice, honest insight, and lessons that apply both on and off the road. 2. The Disappearing 24 Hour Store

    The Disappearing 24 Hour Store

At 2:30 in the morning, I pull into town thinking a quick Walmart stop will be easy… only to find the doors locked. Then it happens again at another store. And another. Even restaurants that used to serve the night crowd are closed. What started as a simple late-night inconvenience turns into a much bigger question: Why are there so few 24-hour businesses now, and when did America stop staying awake? We dig into what really happened. Yes, COVID changed everything, but it wasn’t the only reason. Businesses discovered that overnight hours often weren’t profitable enough to justify the extra labor, security, utilities, and theft prevention. Hiring overnight workers became harder, wages increased, and many companies realized they could operate fewer hours without losing much revenue. The overnight economy didn’t disappear overnight—it slowly got priced out. Then we talk about the people who still live on a different clock. Truck drivers, nurses, police officers, firefighters, EMTs, factory employees, warehouse workers, airport crews, and countless others still work while most of America sleeps. When everything closes, simple errands become real problems: finding baby formula, cold medicine, groceries after a 12-hour shift, or even windshield wipers during a rainstorm. We also explore how online shopping, delivery services, and curbside pickup have permanently changed the way many people shop, making overnight retail less necessary for some—but not for everyone. 👇 Key Takeaways ✅ Why 24-hour stores largely disappeared after the pandemic ✅ The hidden costs businesses face operating overnight ✅ How staffing shortages, theft, and rising wages changed retail ✅ Why night-shift workers feel the impact the most ✅ How online shopping and delivery changed consumer habits ✅ Whether 24-hour stores could make a comeback ✅ Why locations near hospitals, airports, truck stops, and distribution centers may be the first to see overnight retail return If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to subscribe, leave a review, and share it with someone who works nights. I’d also love to hear from you: (email@truckingray.com) What’s something that’s disappeared or changed over the last decade that you still miss today? Interested in being a guest on the podcast? AAWTA - Claudette Hart On What If The Hardest Part Of Trucking Is What Nobody Tells You

A truck can teach you freedom, skills, and financial stability — but it can also teach you lessons the hard way. In this episode of That’s Delivered, Trucking Ray sits down with Claudette Hart, experienced truck driver and advocate connected with the African American Women in Trucking Association (AAWTA), to talk about what life behind the wheel actually looks like for women in trucking — especially Black women building careers in transportation and logistics. Claudette shares the realities many CDL schools and recruiters never explain: how trucking pay structures really work, why breakdowns quietly drain income, how carrier choice affects everything from downtime to support, and why trucking often comes without a clear roadmap for success. She also opens up about: 🔥 Her truck catching fire during her first year 🧠 Why mental health in trucking deserves serious attention 🚛 Running reefer and dry van freight ⚠️ The pressure and stress drivers carry silently The conversation also gets practical with real-world safety advice for women drivers: night parking decisions, truck stop awareness, weather safety, communication habits, hygiene strategies, human trafficking awareness, and why it is always OK to shut down when conditions are unsafe. We also discuss how mentorship and community through AWTA can help drivers build confidence, avoid costly mistakes, and create opportunities beyond just driving. Key Takeaways 👇 ✅ Trucking freedom comes with challenges many new drivers never hear about ✅ Carrier choice can dramatically affect income, support, and downtime ✅ Mental health struggles in trucking deserve open conversation ✅ Safety awareness and preparation matter every single day ✅ It is always OK to stop driving when conditions become unsafe ✅ Mentorship and community can change the direction of a trucking career If you care about women in trucking, CDL training, trucking wellness, and real-world advice you can use on your next run — this episode is for you. How Drivers Get Trapped By Their Dream Truck interview with Truckers Justice Center Attorney Paul Taylor

One bad lease purchase agreement can cost a driver tens of thousands of dollars. One conversation with dispatch can determine whether you're protected by federal law or standing alone when something goes wrong. In this episode of That's Delivered, I sit down with attorney Paul O. Taylor of Truckers Justice Center, a trucking attorney who has spent years helping drivers, owner-operators, and independent contractors navigate some of the toughest legal situations in the industry. We dive into the hidden dangers of lease purchase agreements, why so many drivers underestimate the true cost of truck ownership, and what every driver should calculate before signing a contract. Paul explains how fuel, maintenance, escrow accounts, truck payments, insurance, and downtime can quickly turn a promising opportunity into a financial burden. We also discuss what happens when a dispatcher pressures a driver to violate safety regulations, how federal whistleblower protections work, and what rights drivers actually have when they refuse unsafe instructions. Paul breaks down commonly misunderstood FMCSA regulations, fatigue, bad weather decisions, equipment defects, and why "everybody does it" is never a legal defense. The conversation continues with independent contractor classification, 1099 versus employee status, DAC reports, factoring receivables, lawsuit funding loans, court timelines, and how drivers can avoid ending up with the wrong carrier in the first place. Whether you're a company driver, lease operator, owner-operator, or considering getting your own authority, this episode is packed with practical information that could save you money, protect your career, and help you make smarter business decisions. 👇 Key Takeaways ✅ Common trucking regulations drivers often misunderstand  ✅ Warning signs hidden inside lease purchase agreements  ✅ What to do when dispatch asks you to break the rules  ✅ When a driver is truly an independent contractor  ✅ The pros and cons of factoring receivables  ✅ How long legal cases really take  ✅ Lawsuit funding loans: helpful tool or costly mistake?  ✅ Understanding DAC reports and employment records  ✅ How to avoid signing on with the wrong carrier  ✅ Legal protections available to drivers who stand up for safety Subscribe, share this episode with another driver, and leave a review to help more people stay informed, protected, and successful on the road. Mark Fiorello on Communication, Leadership & How AI Helps Trucking When People Communicate Well

This week on That's Delivered Podcast, Trucking Ray sits down with Mark Fiorello, a Marine Corps veteran and trucking professional with 33 years of industry experience and over a million safe miles. Mark shares lessons from the Marines, why communication failures are driving good drivers away, and where AI can actually help trucking operations become more efficient. Key Takeaways: ✅ How Mark got started in trucking ✅ Lessons from the Marine Corps that still apply today ✅ Why communication breakdowns create driver frustration ✅ The biggest mistakes companies make with drivers ✅ Building trust between drivers, dispatch, safety, and management ✅ Common operational bottlenecks fleets still struggle with ✅ What companies can do to improve driver retention ✅ Practical uses for AI in trucking operations ✅ Why AI won't fix broken processes ✅ How fleets can successfully implement new technology Mark's Message: Clear communication isn't complicated. Drivers don't expect perfection—they expect honesty, timely updates, and respect. When companies fail to communicate, trust disappears. When trust disappears, good drivers leave. Mark also explains why AI should be viewed as a tool, not a replacement for people. The companies seeing the biggest benefits are using AI to eliminate repetitive tasks, improve visibility, and give employees more time to focus on relationships and service. Hope Zvara On Rebuilding Driver Health One Percent At A Time

Your body takes every mile personally, and trucking has a way of collecting payments in lower back pain, stiff hips, poor sleep, and a mind that never truly powers down. In this episode of That’s Delivered, Trucking Ray sits down with Hope Zvara, CEO of  Mother Trucker Yoga, to talk about what really happens to driver health over time — and why most “perfect” fitness plans fail the moment real life hits. Hope shares how yoga helped her through depression, anxiety, and addiction recovery, then explains how those same mind-body tools can help drivers manage stress, isolation, fatigue, and habit change on the road. The conversation dives into inflammation, circulation, recovery, and why sleep is one of the most overlooked nutrients affecting weight, blood pressure, cortisol, energy, and mood. We also get practical about hydration, food choices, digestive problems drivers rarely talk about, and how small daily habits compound over time. Plus, Hope demonstrates three simple movements drivers can do in under five minutes: pelvic tilts in the driver’s seat, calf pumps outside the truck, and a gentle cobra stretch in the sleeper berth. If you’ve been feeling worn down physically or mentally by the lifestyle, this episode is a reminder that rebuilding your health doesn’t happen overnight — it happens one percent at a time. 👇 Key Takeaways ✅ Small daily habits matter more than extreme fitness plans ✅ Sleep directly impacts stress, weight, blood pressure, and recovery ✅ Sitting for long hours affects circulation, inflammation, and digestion ✅ Simple mobility exercises can reduce stiffness and improve movement fast ✅ Drivers need realistic wellness routines that fit trucking life ✅ Mental health and physical health are deeply connected ✅ Consistency beats perfection when building healthier habits ✅ Fleets see better driver outcomes when wellness programs are practical and achievable Subscribe for more real conversations from the trucking industry, share this episode with a driver who needs it, and leave a review with the one small change you’re committing to this week.
