Revenge is best served Five-Nil: Battery Thump Brooklyn

Brooklyn beat Charleston 3โ€“0 earlier this season. The Battery remembered. Charleston answered with an emphatic 5โ€“0 beatdown at Patriots Point, getting goals from five different players and delivering exactly the kind of response we had been waiting to see. But was this really the Battery turning the cornerโ€”or just another dominant home performance? On this episode of Cannon Crรผe, Granit, Ryan and Patrick break down the revenge win over Brooklyn, the impact of Maalique Foster and Miguel Berry, Charlestonโ€™s suddenly dangerous attack, the clean sheet that wasn't quite as comfortable as the scoreline suggests, and the spectacularโ€”and completely unnecessaryโ€”Kissiedou goal/red-card combination. Then we look ahead to Loudoun, Charlestonโ€™s troublesome road form, the increasingly tight Eastern Conference playoff race, and ask a bigger question: Has Tampa Bay replaced Louisville as the team everyone should fear in the East? Five goals. Five scorers. A clean sheet. A little revenge. Now do it again. EPISODE NOTES REVENGE: COMPLETE Charleston avenged its earlier 3โ€“0 loss in Brooklyn with a 5โ€“0 demolition at Patriots Point. The guys discuss whether this was simply a great night at homeโ€”or evidence that the Battery have finally rediscovered the attacking identity that has been missing during their recent inconsistent stretch. Five Goals, Five Different Scorers Charleston didn't rely on one player to carry the attack. Goals came from throughout the lineup, with movement, quick combinations and aggressive runs creating a much more dangerous version of the Battery. Let It Foster Maalique Foster was everywhere. After repeatedly asking for more minutes and more attacking freedom for Foster, the Crรผe breaks down what changed with him on the field and why his pace and movement may be too valuable to leave out of the starting XI. And yesโ€”we may have accidentally created the phrase โ€œLet It Foster.โ€ Miguel Berry Changes the Attack Berry's strength, movement and willingness to create for teammates stood out throughout the match. Was this his best performance in a Battery shirt? Patrick makes the case for Berry as his Man of the Matchโ€”and we discuss whether Charleston may have found a better way to use him. A Clean Sheetโ€ฆ But Let's Talk About It Luis Zamudio officially gets the clean sheet. But Joey Akpunonu's early goal-line clearance may have prevented an entirely different match from developing. We continue our discussion about Charleston's goalkeeping, defensive structure and whether the final score covered up some dangerous moments early in the match. Goal, Assistโ€ฆ Fight? A spectacular strike from distance. A gorgeous backheel. And then a completely unnecessary challenge with Charleston already cruising. The Crรผe breaks down Kissiedou's eventful night and whether his late red card unnecessarily hurts Charleston heading into the next match. Also: Can Somebody Please Fix the Pitch? Patriots Point's playing surface gets another Cannon Crรผe performance review. Home Depot and Lowe's sponsorship inquiries are apparently welcome. Next Up: Loudoun United Charleston destroyed Loudoun 4โ€“1 in the previous meeting, but this one comes on the roadโ€”and Loudoun enters in much better form. Can the Battery reproduce the speed, movement and creativity we saw against Brooklyn? Or do we go right back to slow possession and passing around the back? OUR LOUDOUN PREDICTIONS Patrick: Battery 1โ€“0 Granit: 1โ€“1 Draw Ryan: Battery 2โ€“1 The Eastern Conference Is Getting Interesting With the playoff race tightening, we look beyond Charleston and discuss one of the biggest questions in the East: Is Tampa Bay becoming the new Louisville? The Rowdies are surging, Louisville suddenly looks vulnerable, and the traditional hierarchy of the Eastern Conference may finally be shifting. As the postseason approaches, one thing becomes increasingly important: Every match is a final. Cannon Crรผe Charleston Battery analysis, arguments, goalkeeper criticism, questionable predictions and the occasional discussion about illegally fertilizing the Patriots Point pitch. #CharlestonBattery #USLChampionship #CannonCrue #BrooklynFC #LoudounUnited #VamosBattery

Battery Collapse in Colorado: Is it time for a change??

The Charleston Battery fought their way back into the match at Colorado Springs, equalized in the 81st minute and appeared ready to escape with a valuable road point. Then it all fell apart again. In this episode of Cannon Crรผe, Granit, Patrick and Ryan break down Charlestonโ€™s 2โ€“1 loss to the Switchbacks and confront the issue that has become impossible to ignore: the Batteryโ€™s continuing inconsistency in goal. The crew examines both Colorado Springs goals, whether Luis Zamudio should remain the unquestioned starter and how repeated mistakes from the goalkeeper can affect the confidence and decision-making of the entire team. But the problems go beyond one position. Charleston followed a June in which the club scored 16 goals in four league matches with a July that produced only four goals across four matches. The Battery remain near the top of the Eastern Conference, but poor road performances, defensive breakdowns and an inability to protect results have left the team stuck in a crowded group of contenders. The conversation also expands into the larger direction of the club. Are the Battery doing enough on the field and behind the scenes to establish themselves as a future first-division organization? Where is the stadium vision? Is the club scouting and replacing departed talent effectively? And at what point do deep playoff runs need to become actual silverware? The episode is not entirely doom and gloom. The crew highlights the performances of Jeremy Kelly, Nathan Messer, Malik Foster and Wilmer Cabrera, while discussing possible lineup changes that could help Charleston regain its attacking energy. Finally, the guys preview the upcoming home match against Brooklyn FCโ€”a team sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference that already defeated Charleston 3โ€“0 earlier this season. For the Battery, this cannot be another flat performance against a struggling opponent. It is time to return the favor. In this episode: โ€ข Patrick celebratesโ€”or defendsโ€”his first yellow card โ€ข Charlestonโ€™s disastrous road form โ€ข What went wrong on both Colorado Springs goals โ€ข Should the Battery rotate their goalkeepers? โ€ข How goalkeeping mistakes affect the entire team โ€ข Charlestonโ€™s dramatic decline from June to July โ€ข Why the club struggles to maintain momentum โ€ข The Batteryโ€™s first-division ambitions โ€ข Stadium development, scouting and roster replacement โ€ข Jeremy Kellyโ€™s importance to the team โ€ข Why Malik Foster should receive more starts โ€ข Wilmer Cabreraโ€™s impact from the bench โ€ข The importance of the upcoming Brooklyn FC rematch โ€ข Match predictions from Granit, Patrick and Ryan The Battery are still in the fight near the top of the Eastern Conference. But as the season enters August, the excuses are running out.

Consistently Inconsistent: Battery Fall at Indy

Charleston Battery created chances, controlled much of the match and finished with 18 shotsโ€”but still left Indianapolis with a 2โ€“0 defeat. Granit, Patrick and Ryan break down the frustrating loss to Indy Eleven, including Charlestonโ€™s problems in front of goal, Graham Smithโ€™s red card and Luis Zamudioโ€™s ability to produce spectacular saves while still battling moments of inconsistency. The crew also discusses Emilio Ycazaโ€™s growing leadership role and why his recent form has become so important to the Batteryโ€™s midfield. Then the conversation expands into a broader debate about officiating. Was Smithโ€™s challenge really worthy of a red card? Do referees communicate enough with their assistants, coaches and captains? Should poor performances result in demotion, retraining or suspension? And could referees eventually face their own version of promotion and relegation? The episode closes with a brief look ahead to Charlestonโ€™s important USL Cup matchup against Charlotte Independence. Topics include: โ€ข Charlestonโ€™s missed opportunities against Indy Elevenโ€ข The red-card decision that changed the matchโ€ข Luis Zamudioโ€™s development and goalkeeper mentalityโ€ข Emilio Ycazaโ€™s emergence as a leaderโ€ข Referee consistency and accountabilityโ€ข Communication between officials, players and coachesโ€ข VAR, human error and referee developmentโ€ข The upcoming match against Charlotte Independence Up the Battery.
