Ep. 118 - Content Creators Vs Wedding Videographers - What's The Difference?

It's a conversation that keeps coming up in wedding industry groups, in comment sections, and on wedding days themselves. Where does wedding videography end and content creation begin? And why does there seem to be so much tension between the two? Danny and Jase get into it this week after a post from a content creator started doing the rounds, one that was well-intentioned but ended up implying that wedding videographers don't capture the candid moments, the fleeting glances, the atmosphere, the conversations happening around the couple. The stuff that, according to the post, only a content creator delivers. The problem is that's exactly what videographers do. Danny & Jase breaks down why posts like this, however unintentional, are actively creating confusion for couples who are trying to understand what they're actually booking, and why framing content creation as the thing that captures authenticity while videography just creates beautiful cinema is a false choice that doesn't reflect what most wedding videographers actually deliver. They also talk about why the real difference between videography and content creation isn't what gets captured on the day, it's what happens to the footage afterwards. The content creator sends everything raw within 48 hours. The videographer curates, shapes, pairs moments with audio, and builds something designed to last. Same moments. Different product. Both have genuine value. There's a call to the industry to stay in their lane when it comes to online posts and bridal forums, to stop the animosity between suppliers on wedding days, and to let the actual strengths of each service speak for themselves rather than accidentally undermining someone else to sell your own thing. A good one this week, and one that'll probably spark some conversations. 🎧 Podcast Sponsors LUMIX Try the new S1R2 or S1 Mark II with Lumix's free 48 hour loan scheme. Ep. 117 - Should You Ever Discount Your Prices?

It comes up in every Facebook group, every videographer community, and probably every slow week you've ever had. Should you discount your prices? Is it a sign of weakness? Is it bad for the industry? Or is it just smart business? Danny and Jason get into it properly this week, and the answer is more nuanced than the usual "never lower your worth" advice you see online. Jason talks through how his thinking has shifted over the years, from a firm no when he first got established, to a more considered approach based on real factors: how close the venue is to home, whether it's a weekday, whether the date would otherwise sit empty, and whether the back end editing workload justifies the number. A wedding 12 minutes from the house where he's home by half nine and watching TV while the footage backs up hits very differently to a late-night drive back from the Borders. Danny reveals how he actually manages this without ever calling it a discount. He runs three separate pricing brochures, one for peak season, one for off season, and one for local bookings, and sends the right one based on the enquiry. He has also deliberately taken on lower budget projects when the creative challenge appealed to him, and explains why that is sometimes the right call for keeping the work interesting. They also get into why pride and ego plays a bigger role in the "I never discount" stance than most people admit, why outsourcing your editing completely changes the maths on what you're willing to work for, and why having wiggle room built into your pricing from the start means you never have to feel like you're giving something away. If you've ever stared at an enquiry that's slightly under budget and wondered what to do with it, this one will help you think it through. 🎧 Podcast Sponsors LUMIX Try the new S1R2 or S1 Mark II with Lumix's free 48 hour loan scheme. Ep 116 - Is TikTok the Most Untapped Platform for Wedding Videographers Right Now?

It's a chaotic one this week. Jason opens up by admitting he nearly got completely done over by a sophisticated hotel phishing scam ahead of his upcoming destination wedding in Spain. They had his name, his booking reference, his phone number, and a convincing branded website. His bank did what his brain didn't and blocked the payment just in time. If you're heading to a destination wedding this year, this is worth hearing before you do. From there, Danny and Jason get into something that's been on both their minds for a while: TikTok. Not the vague idea of being on TikTok, but actually figuring out what to do with it as wedding videographers. Danny's just picked up the Insta 360 X5 and has a plan to use it for behind the scenes content from weddings, giving people a genuine POV of what it's like to work a day. Jason talks through what's actually worked for him on the platform, why it needs to be treated completely differently from Instagram, why talking head videos are massively underused by videographers, and how responding to a comment with a follow-up video sent his reach through the roof. They also pull back the curtain a little on the That Wedding Videographer Summit 2027, taking place in Glasgow on the 23rd of March. The speaker lineup is announced, and it's a strong one. Plus they're planning a TikTok industry pro session for the day because after this conversation, it's clear most videographers need someone to give them a proper push in that direction. They want to hear from you on what kind of industry pro would be most useful, so get in touch. A looser one this week but packed with stuff worth thinking about if social media strategy has been sitting on your to-do list all year. 🎧 Podcast Sponsors LUMIX Try the new S1R2 or S1 Mark II with Lumix's free 48 hour loan scheme. Ep. 115 - How to Run a Wedding Film Business Alongside a Full-Time Job (Without Losing Your Mind)

What does it actually look like to run a successful wedding film business when you've already got a full-time job, a young family, and a life that doesn't stop for editing backlogs? This week Danny and Jason are joined by Andy from House of Tattersall Films, based in Uttoxeter, who has been doing exactly that for the past four years. Andy's background is about as varied as it gets. Before weddings, he was filming music videos, festivals, and arena tours across Europe. Now he's head of marketing at an independent boarding school, a dad to a three year old, and shooting 20 to 25 weddings a year. The secret to keeping it all from collapsing? Knowing exactly where his time is best spent, and outsourcing everything else. Andy explains why he brought in Bride and Groom Video almost from the start, how they matched his editing style from the very first film, and why handing over his editing has transformed what running a wedding business actually feels like day to day. Because of that partnership, every wedding is essentially a day and a half of his time. He gets to shoot, hand everything over, and have films back with couples in six to eight weeks, often faster. He even delivered one couple their full film before their honeymoon started. Danny and Jason get honest about what it cost them to edit everything themselves in those early years, the sleep deprivation, the burnout, the red wine, and why discovering outsourcing earlier would have changed everything. If you're currently juggling a day job with editing your own wedding films late into the night, this one is going to hit home. They also get into the broader question of whether outsourcing is only for people who are time poor, or whether full time videographers should be thinking about it differently entirely, as a way to free up space for the parts of the business that actually move it forward. Ep. 114 - Why Wedding Videographers Are Bringing Back Camcorders

Remember when family holidays, birthdays and childhood memories were all captured on a little camcorder? That nostalgic look is making a huge comeback in the wedding world, and in this episode we’re breaking down exactly why we’ve started using camcorders alongside our professional filmmaking. We talk about why this trend has exploded, how it compares to shooting Super 8, the surprisingly low cost of getting started, and the biggest mistakes we’ve made so you don’t have to. More importantly, we share how we’ve been using camcorders to capture moments we’d never normally get. From handing the camera to the right wedding guests, to asking questions that uncover incredible audio and genuine reactions, this episode is packed with practical ideas you can start using at your very next wedding. We also cover: • Why camcorders create a feeling that modern cinema cameras can’t replicate  • The best way to brief guests before handing over the camera  • Questions that consistently generate brilliant audio  • Why movement and imperfections make the footage even better  • Common mistakes to avoid  • Why we now deliver all of the raw camcorder footage as a bonus for our couples If you’ve been curious about adding a nostalgic layer to your films without the expense of Super 8, this episode will show you exactly where to start. 🎧 Podcast Sponsors LUMIX Try the new S1R2 or S1 Mark II with Lumix's free 48 hour loan scheme. Ep. 113 - The Camera Toys That Are Changing How We Tell Wedding Stories

Beyond your A cam and B cam, there's a whole world of creative kit that can completely change the way you capture a wedding day. This week Danny and Jason go full show and tell with the gadgets and cameras they've been experimenting with, what's worked, what's been a disaster, and what they'd genuinely recommend. Jason breaks down why the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 has become one of his most used pieces of kit, not as a main camera, but as a reliable safety angle that has genuinely saved him at weddings where space was tight and the photographer was occupying every obvious position. He also makes a strong case for it being the smartest second camera purchase for anyone just starting out who doesn't have the budget for another full setup. Danny gets into the Insta360 GO S and the range of creative shots it unlocks, from dog harness cams to mounting inside a Cadillac for a ceremony arrival, to sweeping over a dance floor like an indoor drone without the terrifying insurance implications. He also talks through how he's been using a CampSnap disposable-style camera to hand to guests and kids at weddings, and why the footage you can't predict is often the footage that ends up in the teaser. They also get into the broader shift happening right now toward less polished, more authentic wedding filmmaking, why experimentation is keeping things creatively fresh after years of doing the same thing, and why the couples watching your films on social media are responding to the stuff that looks a bit different. If you've been thinking about adding something new to your kit bag this season, this one's worth a listen. 🎧 Podcast Sponsors LUMIX Try the new S1R2 or S1 Mark II with Lumix's free 48 hour loan scheme. Ep. 112 - Comparison Is the Thief of Joy: Why Scrolling Instagram Is Wrecking Your Confidence

You finish a wedding film. You're genuinely proud of it. You send it to the couple, get back a message saying it's the best money they spent on the day. Then you open Instagram and within ten minutes you're convinced you're not good enough to be doing this job. Danny and Jason are back after their first ever skipped week, and they're getting into something every wedding filmmaker feels but rarely says out loud. The industry is improving fast, almost too fast, and it's becoming harder than ever to scroll without comparing your work to someone else's highlight reel from a better lit day with a bigger budget and a smoother run of show. They talk honestly about the mental spiral that happens when you post a teaser you're proud of and immediately get served fifteen other videographers' best work, why nobody's wedding day is actually as flawless as the final film makes it look, and the now infamous story from a CODA event where a videographer broke down everything that went wrong behind one of his most celebrated films, gimbal failure and all. Danny also shares the reality of trying new gear on a live wedding day, including a camcorder handed to the wrong bridesmaid entirely, and why experimenting in public always feels worse before it gets better. The conclusion is simple but worth hearing again: you're not making films for your peers, you're making them for the people who were actually there, and that's the only comparison that matters. A more personal one this week, but a genuinely important reminder if Instagram has been getting to you lately. 🎧 Podcast Sponsors LUMIX Try the new S1R2 or S1 Mark II with Lumix's free 48 hour loan scheme. Ep. 111 - How I've Averaged FIVE Bookings a Month Without Posting On Instagram

Enquiries are down across the industry. There are more photographers and videographers competing for the same couples than ever before. And most people's answer is to just post more and hope for the best. This week Danny and Jason get into why Meta ads might be the thing you've been putting off that could actually change your enquiry rate, and how to do them properly. Jason has been running ads consistently for seven months and breaks down exactly what's worked, what flopped, and the one thing most videographers get wrong when they start. Spoiler: it's stopping too early. He explains how Meta's algorithm actually learns over time, why cutting an ad before it has enough data basically resets everything, and why the content that performs best as an ad probably isn't what you think it is. His two best performing ads have nothing to do with showcasing wedding films. One hit 890,000 views. A wedding planner saw it and booked him for a wedding in August. The other generated a booking too. Both were shot on his phone. Jason talks through the mistakes he made when he first started, including accidentally targeting the wrong audience entirely, and why ads work brilliantly as a background tool that keeps your business visible even during the months when life takes over and you're barely posting. They also cover why boosting content that's already performed well organically is one of the most efficient things you can do with a small ad budget, and why doing it on your computer rather than your phone saves you 30% straight away. If you've been curious about ads but don't know where to start, this is the episode. 🎧 Podcast Sponsors LUMIX Try the new S1R2 or S1 Mark II with Lumix's free 48 hour loan scheme.
