Preached by Bernard of Clairvaux and led by two European kings, the crusade set out with huge expectations. But the armies suffered devastating defeats crossing Anatolia, and their main assault—the Siege of Damascus in 1148—ended in just four days with a humiliating retreat. Although crusaders helped capture Lisbon in Portugal, the campaign in the Holy Land was a failure, weakening Christian influence and paving the way for rising Muslim leaders like Nur ad‑Din and, later, Saladin.
