Ep 104: The top five qualities you need to be happy in Vet Med (and how to achieve them)

There are qualities you can build — no matter your age, your background, how long you've been in practice, or what your head has been telling you all these years — that will genuinely change how you experience every single day in VetMed. Not by fitting yourself into a square hole when you’re a round peach. But by becoming someone who can actually get the most out of a profession you care about, even when the system around you isn't perfect. After 22 years in practice, a ton of coaching, and working with vets who are at every stage of burnout — I've landed on 5  qualities that make the difference between floating along and actually loving where you are. I go through all 5 in this episode. What they actually mean in the day-to-day chaos of clinic life. Why most of us weren't taught them and struggle with them. And - why you absolutely can build them, even if right now you're like, yeah but that's just not me. In this episode: Why thriving in VetMed is not the same as being strong enough to put up with itThe two disclaimers I need you to hear before we get into the 5 qualitiesWhy neuroplasticity means it genuinely is never too late to change how you think and feelAll 5 qualities, what they look like in real clinic life, and how to actually start building themMentioned in this episode: The 3-step evaluation process (mentioned in previous episodes)Breathwork resources — Sam Harry's breathwork on YouTube, heart rate variability breathingThe quiz: https://gunilalifecoach.com/quiz.html — find out which quality to focus on first, and get a personalised guideIf you're in Scotland between the 23rd of May and the 8th of June — I want to meet you! Ep. 103: Don’t own the owner’s decision with Dr. Amber Parks

Sometimes I feel a bit crazy, all alone shouting from the rooftops about how we can feel SO MUCH BETTER in the veterinary profession when we learn to shift our own perspective. BUT: I’m alone no more!! Meet Dr. Amber Parks, who has been on the same journey as me, and is as honest and straightforward  talking about it as I am. She surprised me a few times during our conversation with her points of view and I cannot wait to share this with you! We touch on the often deep resentment and defensiveness that burnout breeds, the impossible mental load of carrying every client's financial decision as your own responsibility, the negativity bias that makes vets remember every bad case and forget every win, and the disconnect between the gold-standard medicine taught in school and the messy, undiagnosed reality of clinical practice.  We also share opinions about how corporations manage practices, but I can’t write about it here (I might get banned) - you’ll have to have a listen! Amber is funny and super smart so this conversation won’t bore you - you definitely won't be able to listen on 2x speed.
