    Niche Cortese by La Caplana aged in amphora

    This episode is dedicated to a very special wine and a very special wine producer - Angora by La Caplana. https://www.lacaplana.it/it/# Anfora, from La Caplana, ferments and ages in clay. It's an old method, older than oak, and it changes the wine in specific ways: slower oxygen exchange, steadier temperature, more texture from extended skin contact. The result is a Cortese with more grip, more shadow, less of the clean edges we expect from Gavi. We taste it and talk through what clay actually does to a white wine — structurally, chemically, on the palate — and what it says about a variety most people underestimate.     Etna Bianco by Inessa: unique indigenous grape from the volcanic soil of Sicily

    In this episode, we are delighted to present this incredibly refreshing and elegant wine. Etna Bianco di Inessa comes from fertile volcanic soils, located at an altitude of 650-700 metres above sea level in the Linguaglossa area, in a microclimate characterised by a good temperature difference between day and night. The vinification is traditional in white, with ageing exclusively in steel. This wine is made out of the indigenous grape of Sicily called Carricante: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carricante In the glass it shows a beautiful straw yellow. The scent is immediately mineral, accompanied by hints of ripe yellow pulp fruit, white flowers and fresh aromatic herbs. On the palate, it has an excellent balance between freshness and flavour, with a finish of good persistence. Perfect with fish and shellfish, it also goes well with vegetarian first courses.     Sauvignon Blanc by Lena Südsteiermark DAC 2023

    The Skringer family winery is located on Eichberg, a unique high plateau at 560 meters above sea level. Now in its third generation, the family cultivates its 13 hectares of vineyards sustainably and in harmony with nature. The Sauvignon blanc Lena, named after the daughter and winemaker of this wine, impresses with its versatility.     Adventurous story of Grauburgunder in Italy!

    Hello and welcome to the 4th episode of our podcast "Why White Wine", in which we taste white wine on air! Today's guest on the table is the famous grape, known by various names and with a rich and adventurous history.  Grauburgunder, Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris has been known since the Middle Ages in the ⁠Burgundy region⁠, where it was probably called ⁠Fromenteau⁠. ⁠ From Burgundy, it spread together with ⁠Pinot Noir and⁠ arrived in Switzerland around 1300. According to reports, the vine was a favorite of Emperor ⁠Charles IV,⁠ who had cuttings exported to Hungary by ⁠Cistercian monks⁠ ⁠:⁠ the friars planted the vines on the slopes of ⁠Badacsony⁠ on ⁠Lake Balaton⁠ in 1375. The vine was soon given the name Szürkebará, which means "gray monk". In 1711, a German merchant named ⁠Johann Seger Ruland⁠ (re)discovered a wild grape growing in the fields of the ⁠Palatinate⁠ ⁠.⁠ The wine he subsequently produced became known as Ruländer, and the grape was later discovered as Pinot Gris⁠.     Austria's signature white wine grape: Grüner Veltliner by Leo Maurer

    Grüner Veltliner literally means ‘green grape from the village of Veltlin in Tyrol’ and it is generally assumed that it must be closely related to two other varieties that are currently making a comeback: Roter Veltliner and Früher Roter Veltliner, also known as Frühroter Veltliner. In today's episode, we introduce you to the evergreen, beautiful grape from the Weinviertel in Austria, produced by Leo Maurer.     Erbaluce di Caluso: sustainable wine from Piedmont

It is likely that it originated in the alpine hills of northern Piedmont. Wines made from Erbaluce tend to be dry with noticeable acidity, which is great for balancing out the sweetness. While the grape's acidity makes it ideal for sweet wine production, the dry wines need to have a lot of fruit in them to balance that acidity. Both the dry and sweet styles of Erbaluce tend to have that lovely apple aroma and flavour.
