Cinema IRL

Amber Noelle & Scott Gerhardt

Cinema IRL drops you straight into the movie and asks the question, "what would YOU do?" In every episode, Amber and Scott (and the occasional guest) take movie plot points and run them through a real-life filter. What holds up, what falls apart, and what they'd actually do when things get messy. From impossible choices to wildly unrealistic storylines, they break it down, challenge each other, and uncover how these stories might play out in real life. Cinema IRL is smart, funny, and just the right amount of unhinged. (In case you're wondering about the dinosaurs on the movie posters, it was an inside joke that gained waaaayyyy too much traction. Rawr!)

E291 – The Breadwinner - What Would YOU Do?

Amber and Scott break down the family comedy The Breadwinner , diving into why this film defies its low critical score to provide genuine, laugh-out-loud entertainment. They explore the comedic brilliance behind the movie's chaotic depiction of parenting, dissecting everything from the "instinctive" nature of household management to the bizarrely over-the-top physical comedy of a horse destroying a home. It is a refreshing look at how a film can succeed by simply knowing exactly what it is and leaning into its own absurdity.   Some What Would You Dos from the episode: If you were Nate, would you tell Lori Greiner you’re staying home with the kids while secretly hiring a nanny to do the work, or would you actually take on the role yourself? When faced with a scheduling conflict between your daughter’s spelling bee and a major work award ceremony, how do you handle the fallout without letting your family down? If you were in charge of a six-year-old who has a habit of hugging and kissing classmates inappropriately, how would you approach the conversation about personal space and consent? When you’ve accidentally destroyed your own house and need to host a live stream for a major business deal, do you attempt to rent an Airbnb to fake your location or come clean to your spouse?   The conversation hits its peak when the hosts debate the sheer lunacy of Nate’s "system" for managing his daughters, which includes buying a horse to bribe a child into stopping bad behavior. Watching Nate try to treat his domestic life like a car dealership while his home literally falls apart around him is easily the most ridiculous and entertaining part of the film.

E289 – Pressure - What Would YOU Do?

In this episode, Amber and Scott dive into the high-stakes history of the film Pressure , which explores the harrowing meteorological decisions leading up to the D-Day invasion. They discuss the fascinating use of inflatable tanks and dummy parachuters as psychological warfare, highlighting how the Allies masterfully tricked the German forces about the actual location of the attack. Amber and Scott also share a laugh over the random trivia that Chris Messina, who plays meteorologist Irving Crick, is actually credited with creating the hashtag.   Some What Would You Dos from the episode: If you were in charge of a mission with 300,000 lives on the line and two experts gave you completely conflicting recommendations, how would you decide whom to trust? If you were Dr. Stagg and had to explain to Eisenhower why providing a 2.5-day forecast with 100% certainty is effectively impossible, how would you articulate that without sounding like you aren't up to the task? If you discovered a small, high-risk gap in a massive storm that could be your only chance to launch a surprise attack, would you risk the mission on that narrow window or wait two weeks for potentially better conditions?   The duo concludes by reflecting on the absurdity of 1940s forecasting methods, specifically the reliance on analog maps —which amounted to checking if the weather was nice on that same date in 1912. It’s hilariously terrifying to realize that the fate of the free world essentially hinged on a meteorologist’s version of confirmation bias .

E287 – Disclosure Day – What Would YOU Do?

In this episode of Cinema IRL , Amber and Scott untangle the chaotic, puzzle-like narrative of Disclosure Day , a film that leaves them questioning everything from government cover-ups to the ethics of alien experimentation. They dive into the surreal experience of the protagonist, Margaret, whose sudden ability to speak foreign languages and tap into the intimate lives of strangers turns her world—and the broadcast booth—upside down. The duo shares a spirited debate over whether this cinematic journey is a profound piece of art or just a confusing, over-extended blockbuster that leaves the audience hanging on a cryptic final word. Some What Would You Dos from the episode: If you worked for a massive corporation and discovered proof of alien life, would you have a moral obligation to leak the truth to the public? If you suddenly developed inexplicable powers that compelled you to travel and act in ways your loved ones couldn't comprehend, how would you handle the strain on your relationships? If you were in Noah's shoes—a man who has built his entire life around maintaining a massive secret—what would you do when that secret is about to be broadcast to the entire world? If you were a member of the general public and saw live, documented evidence of extraterrestrial contact breaking over the news, would you immediately believe it or demand more vetting? Amber and Scott finish the episode by fixating on the absurdity of the movie's final act, specifically the introduction of a mysterious, Wilt Chamberlain-sized alien in a wheelchair. It is hard to take the fate of the universe seriously when the extraterrestrial life forms range from pocket-sized creatures to a giant that makes the entire climax feel like a surreal, cosmic comedy.
