    Fairly KickAss Podcast - Greatest Sh**s: Sugar Ray

    Ah yes. Sugar Ray. Every Morning! Fly! Someday and When It's Over, which you may be surprised to learn are two different songs! Were these songs great? Nah, not really... if they were, we wouldn't be doing this sort of episode for them. But the biggest surprise of all is that, throughout the majority of their first two albums, this band was NOT the same as that which did all those songs I mentioned. I mean, it was the same, at least compositionally: same exact members throughout six of the band's seven studio albums. But after you listen to this podcast, you'll have plenty of examples ss to why it was not the same band at all. But with that all said, with two distinct sounds to work with... we still had to find diamonds in this rough, and that's the whole point of Greatest Sh**s epsiodes. One song for each album, to put together a sort of "Greatest Hits" among some not-great stuff. Since it's a smaller catalog of seven albums, we each also picked a sort of "wild card" across all seven albums, bringing us to a total of ten tracks for our pretend compilation that will thankfully never see the light of day.     Fairly KickAss Podcast - Top 5 Songs That Make Bad 1st Dates But Good 3rd Dates

    Hi there. Zack here, Fairly KickAss Podcast host. You know me. y0Oo. So here's the thing: typically every year, there's only one podcast write-up I dread doing, and that's for our May reviews. It's a problem of my own doing: I wrote myself into a bit corner that I can't get out of. Rules is rules, after all. This might be the only non-May-reviews episode where I have felt the same. Mainly because... how the hell do I describe a top 5 list of songs that make terrible first dates, but wonderful third dates? Like, what does that even mean?? Why would a song fall into one category and not the other? Are these songs that are playing during the titular dates, or songs that remind someone of said date? And what of the second date? We address, oh I dunno, like 15% of those questions, and undoubtedly leave all of you with more questions that you didn't even know you had once the episode is mercifully done. Us three hosts are in rare form, and the result is some of the most unpredictable stuff to ever come out of this podcast.     Fairly KickAss Podcast - One Song: Counting Crows

    Were you listening to music in the 1990s? What about the 2000s? (Technically 2010s and 2020s, but not like... I mean, you'll see.) If you were, then you know exactly who this band is. Not only that, but the moment I mention the name of the band, you will have a song in your head. WHICH song? Well, that's kinda the whole thing that we're doing. This is the latest episode in our patient-not-pending One Song series, where we take an artist's complete discography and find the best of the bunch. Think of the catalog like a bouquet of roses: most look and smell great, a few are rotten, but there's always one that you can pick out. And each of the three of us did just that with the discography of the Counting Crows. We tend to pick great artists for this series, and this episode is no different. First three albums went platinum. Two Grammy noms, for Best New Artist (won by Sheryl Crow, fine); and Round Here, nominated for [inhales] Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal (won by Aerosmith's Crazy, it's like the fifth-best song of the five-song field but whatever). But the important question is: which jam of all of their best is the very best, the really-really-good diamond in the bag of diamonds? Did one of us nail it, or were we all off?     Fairly KickAss Podcast - Monthly Reviews for September 2026

    Hi there! September here. (It's our podcast description, months can talk, get over it.) I had a LOT going on this... me... musically. Wow! So many great albums! So many great charting singles! So many not-great charting singles! But the important thing is everyone tried, and I love that for me. I had all kinds of music too. Pop, rock, R&B, country, and lots of other smaller kinds that fit into those kinds. It's like musical Jenga! I've never played Jenga, because I'm a month and all, but I bet it's fun! It was the best month of the year, according to myself - but I'm a bit biased, right? I'm also right, I am the best month. And this collection of music proves it! The people who presented you this podcast did a great job putting me on a pedestal, where I belong. The only downside is that I only get to do this once a year.     Fairly KickAss Podcast - Vibes: Signature Sounds

    We... uhhh... yeah. I don't know how to describe this one, so I'm gonna try. It's one of our patented Vibes episodes, in which we take a topic and we... vibe. We just chat. We talk, and we discuss, and we meander and mosey along a very loose agenda. And this episode's agenda was perhaps one of the loosest that we've done. The topic, at the root, is signature sounds. That can mean a lot of things, and we go in several of those directions. Signature sounds of certain artists, of certain time periods, certain subgenres of music and labels and geographical regions... how those change, how those stay the same... yeah. It was vast. But it was also good! Many great topics were discussed, many great artists were covered, and I think at the end of the day we can say one thing about the episode, with 100% certainty: we talked.     Fairly KickAss Podcast REWIND - Top 5 Jazz Songs

    Was this the classiest episode of the Fairly KickAss Podcast ever? Indubitably. Which is why there were no jokes, no gags, no puns. We kept the culture high, for a topic that deserves it: jazz. Smooth, unless it's chaotic. No lyrics, unless there are some. A small outfit in some cases; in others, an enormous orchestra. And everything in between.All that was in past-tense, because this is one of our Rewind episodes! We dug into our Vault to find a fun episode that was already published during the Spotify-only days... back in April of 2023, to be exact. If you remember the episode from April of 2023, then 1) how? we don't even remember this stuff, and 2) it's the same. Mostly. No songs interspersed as there were before, but besides that it's the same KickAssery that you're used to.Jazz is an amazing, broad, delightful genre of music that the three of us admittedly were not nearly as up on as we should have been, and this podcast helped us to scratch a tiny bit of that surface.
