Rebellion Is Reclamation: Season 4 Finale

ABOUT THIS EPISODE This is the season 4 finale of From the Ashes, my reflection on a year of conversations that started with Becoming the Intentional Rebel. The more I sat with those conversations, the clearer it became that rebellion isn't about fighting back or proving anyone wrong. It's about reclaiming your right to choose your own destiny, and I walk through what we reclaimed this season: the body, discernment, the right to take up space, creativity and voice, and our own power to heal. This one is for anyone waiting for permission to love themselves a little more, and I dedicate it to my clients and students. Season 5 is coming with a new pace and a new focus: Self-Love Is the Medicine. KEY THEMES Rebellion as reclamation, not a way to fight back or prove anyone wrong Reclaiming the body Reclaiming discernment and critical thinking Reclaiming the right to take up space and be seen Reclaiming creativity and voice Reclaiming our own power to heal Self-improvement without fixing yourself to fit a "better" world What changed for me this season, and what falls away when you stop chasing the message that you aren't enough ABOUT THE SHOW From the Ashes is part of The Vibrant Visionary — a space for people who are tired of pretending they're fine and hungry for a more honest way of living. It's Okay to Stop Abandoning Yourself for "The Cause"

ABOUT THIS EPISODE I'm doing something different this week: a solo conversation with myself, arguments and pushback both, on a distinction I think our culture deliberately blurs. Sacrifice and self-abandonment can look identical from the outside, but one is a conscious choice aligned with your own values, and the other is slowly giving your resources, your health, your voice, to something that was never yours. I trace this from a real example at my own workplace, through the mechanisms that let self-abandonment scale into something much larger, and into what it actually costs a person over time. This one's for anyone who's been showing up in spite of themselves and calling it commitment. KEY MOMENTS [00:41] — I introduce this episode's format: a conversation with myself, arguments and pushback both, instead of a straight monologue. [04:31] — I lay out the core distinction: signing on to any job or cause means agreeing to its mission and values, and abandoning yourself is not the same as putting others' needs first when it's actually necessary. [10:21] — I define sacrifice as a conscious decision to direct your resources toward what's important to you, versus abandonment, which happens when your resources go somewhere that was never in alignment with your own values. [18:48] — I name the core features of fascism, subordination of the individual to the collective, dissent framed as betrayal, and argue this mechanism is omnipresent in ordinary human society, not just fascist states. [22:06] — I draw the actual line: whether someone's illness or distress is allowed to exist and be acknowledged, or has to be hidden for the group to function. [24:25] — I walk through a live example from my own workplace: a CEO with real vision, employees trained to carry out orders instead of the vision itself, and a culture that ends up replacing warmth with nervous tension. [28:45] — I bring in svastha, the Ayurvedic word for health, established in the self, and argue self-confidence and self-love aren't separate from health, they're the definition of it. [32:29] — I get direct with anyone in a leadership role: if you're asking someone to ignore their sickness or distress to perform, you're extracting their energy without asking if it benefits them. [36:36] — I close with the Artist's Way quote that reframed this for me: the real block was never money, it's the feeling of powerlessness, and empowerment starts with choosing self-care. The Way of Tea: On Purpose, Presence, and What's Actually Worth Dedicating Your Life To with Ian Chun

I'm joined this week by my new friend and fellow JET program alum Ian Chun, founder of Yunomi.life, a global tea e-commerce business based in Tokyo that offers the world's largest selection of Japanese tea and bridges the cultural and linguistic barriers separating Japanese tea farmers from enthusiasts around the world. We meet up at Ian's matcha shop in Tokyo and get into the messiness that is the journey of life and entrepreneurship. Without holding anything back, Ian shares the good, the bad, and the ugly of what it looks like to turn passion and purpose into a business, and how tea can teach us a lot more than we might think about how to live. This episode is dedicated to all the bold dreamers out there who started their own businesses so that they could be the change they wish to see in the world.  Key Moments [04:35] — Ian traces the winding path that brought him here: from a Hawaii kid who set off to study astronomy, to discovering Japanese literature and anime, to realizing the research he thought he wanted felt tedious and lifeless. [08:24] — The unglamorous truth about how the business actually started, and why he's the first to admit he didn't get into tea because he loved tea. [11:00] — Why tea specifically captured him: not the flavor, but how deeply it's woven into Japanese culture, aesthetics, and the entire philosophy of hospitality. [16:01] — The distinction that reframes everything: the "way of tea" isn't a ceremony, it's a way of life, a practice that teaches you how to live through the pursuit of one thing. [20:47] — Ian gets honest about generational purpose: growing up believing he was meant to change the world, and sitting with what it means to have fallen short of that. [27:38] — Fourteen years in, he opens up about failure, running out of money by 2016, and the real question of whether the stress of building something is worth it. [33:12] — The through-line of the whole conversation: purpose is the strongest motivating factor in life, the thing that gives you a reason to keep going even when you can't overcome the hurdle in front of you. About Our Guest: Ian Chun Ian Chun is the founder of Yunomi.life. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Ian made his first solo trip off the island when he set off to Brown University determined to become an astronomer. Sleeping through his first-year courses in quantum mechanics and linear algebra, he discovered Japanese authors Haruki Murakami and Yasunari Kawabata. Much to the chagrin of his parents (who had hopes he would become an engineer), Ian set off on the Philosopher's Path in 1999, immersing himself in the culture and society of Japan. His in-depth knowledge and appreciation for the culture of Japan, as well as his Hawaiian background, has opened many doors in the Japanese tea world, one of Japan's most traditionally closed industries, forming the foundation of Yunomi. Why Pushing Harder Keeps Backfiring: The Five Elements and How You Actually Reach Your Goals

Why Pushing Harder Keeps Backfiring: The Five Elements and How You Actually Reach Your Goals I'm solo this week with a framework from Ayurveda that quietly changed how I think about reaching my goals. We usually use the five elements — space, air, water, earth, and fire — to understand health and disease. But in this episode, I use them differently: to look at how we align our actions with what we actually want. I share how I realized I'd been over-relying on fire my whole life, pushing through everything by force, and what shifted when I finally added the element I'd been neglecting. This one is for anyone who's been working hard, pushing hard, and still feeling further from their goals than they'd like. [00:19] — Why I'm taking a framework usually reserved for health and disease and using it instead to align our actions with our goals. [01:05] — The moment I caught myself writing pages of pure rage in my morning journal, and what it revealed about the energy I'd been running on. [05:36] — A plain-language introduction to the five elements of Ayurveda, and why they're nothing like the elements you learned in chemistry. [09:29] — How each element shows up in your behavior, and how to start recognizing which ones you naturally lean on. [14:05] — The real question: not just which element is your strength, but which one you've been over-leveraging and which you've been neglecting. [14:45] — My own live example: how relying on fire kept me injured and burnt out, and how adding earth changed everything. [18:02] — The two questions I want you to sit with about where you're out of balance. [18:17] — The overthinker's dilemma: what too much air element looks like, and how to settle it. Free Download: The Five Elements Guide I made a companion guide to go with this episode, so you can explore the framework on your own and start noticing your own pattern. It walks through all five elements, what over-relying on each looks like, and includes reflection prompts to find where you're out of balance. The Weekend I Put the Phone Down and Stopped Rushing Toward Death

I'm solo this week with a story that starts on a warm Saturday evening, walking along the river near my house in Tokyo with no phone, no clock, and nowhere to be. What began as an experiment — turning off every screen for a full weekend — turned into something that quietly rearranged how I think about time, urgency, and the life I say I want to live. I get into what surprised me, what I noticed when the devices went dark, and the uncomfortable questions that came up about how much of my own hurry is manufactured. This one is for anyone who feels like there's never enough time, and suspects that might not actually be true. [00:33] — I take you to the scene: a warm evening walk by the river, a family catching bugs, and a trumpet player performing the Les Mis theme one phrase at a time. [03:29] — What this actually was: my first-ever full screen fast, and why I chose it over the strict Vipassana-style weekend I first considered. [06:24] — The thing I already knew going in — that I'm too busy for no good reason — and what human design has been teaching me about how I'm actually meant to work. [10:31] — What surprised me most: with no clock and no devices, time stretched. I meditated, cleaned the whole house, cooked, walked, and finished an entire book, and still had more time. [13:32] — The Japanese concept of yoyu — the leisure and spaciousness to take your time with things — and how much of it I suddenly had. [18:16] — The realization that most of my problems are relational, and that the resentment I carry is really about the boundaries I haven't set. [19:10] — The reflex that exposed everything: reaching for my phone again and again even when it was off, and feeling the urgency come flooding back the moment the computer came on. [21:00] — The bigger question I sat with: in a world that profits from manufactured urgency, what would your life look like if you didn't have to perform it? [25:23] — An honest acknowledgment that not everyone can unplug for a full weekend, and an invitation to start smaller, with whatever freedom you do have. When Healing Becomes the Problem: Peak Experiences, Psychedelics, and What Actually Builds Resilience with Joseph Dowd

I'm joined this week by Joseph Dowd — philosopher, professor, and one of my own Vibrant Visionary Collective members — for a conversation about what healing actually requires. Joseph has tried it all: pharmaceuticals, psychedelic-assisted therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, ayahuasca retreats in Peru, IFS sessions, and years of daily meditation. And yet for a long time, nothing stuck. We get into why — the seductive trap of peak experiences, the philosophy of the hedonic treadmill, what Ayurveda says about the primordial cause of disease, and what seven months of real, consistent work in the Collective actually shifted for him. This one is for anyone who has invested deeply in their healing and still feels like they can't catch a break. [01:51] — Joseph paints the picture of where he was when we started working together: chronic insomnia, a sense that everything always goes wrong, and a deep feeling that his healing was always fragile. [06:24] — He explains what was missing from every modality he tried — not the modality itself, but the underlying belief that any progress was permanent, and the chronic sense that anything could take it away. [13:28] — Joseph describes the trap he'd fallen into: looking for the one big breakthrough that would rewire everything, rather than the slow, unglamorous work of building resilience brick by brick. [21:33] — He gets real about the frustration of peak experiences — having profound psychedelic breakthroughs, feeling enlightened, and then watching himself slip back into the same negative patterns despite doing all the integration work. [32:43] — Joseph shares what's actually been different about the Collective: the community, the daily practices, and the kitchari detox — and how doing something simple and gentle taught him to trust his body's own ability to heal for the first time. [47:25] — He contrasts his two most recent ayahuasca experiences — one where he danced his way into a breakthrough, and five ceremonies in Peru that were intensely somatic and left him realizing the work was happening in his body, not his mind. [54:36] — The insight that changed things: a buried scene from a 1997 horror cartoon surfaced during a ceremony, something was released, and he purged — and slept two consecutive good nights for the first time in years. [01:05:53] — I land on what I think gets lost in healing culture: we are not meant to be on a constant healing journey until we die. At some point, you have to get on with your life. About Joseph Dowd Born in South Korea and raised in the United States as an adoptee, Joseph grew up exploring cosmology, comparative mythology, and environmentalism. As an undergraduate at the University of California Berkeley, he fell in love with philosophy and double-majored in philosophy and religious studies with an emphasis in myth. He earned a master's degree and PhD in philosophy from the University of California Irvine, where he studied medieval European philosophy. He works as a philosophy instructor at California State University San Bernardino and is the author of Introduction to Asian Philosophy, an introductory textbook on early Chinese, Buddhist, and Hindu philosophy. Unbecoming Acceptable: Embracing Your Unconventional Life to Be Truly Happy

About This Episode I'm back solo this week with something I've been reflecting on for a while — that the human desire for belonging is a double-edged sword. While fitting in can bring you acceptance into the tribe, it can also drive a type of self-silencing. This episode is built around a simple but challenging idea: that the parts of you that feel too different, too much, or not enough are not the problem. They're the key to your authentic voice and true sense of joy. I reflect on my millennial Asian-American upbringing and the internal war it created between obedience and desire, and the moment in my adult life where I finally couldn't pretend anymore. This one is for you if you've ever felt like you were living someone else's definition of a good life — and quietly wondered if there was another way. Key Moments [01:37] — I open with three questions that might be closer to home than you'd expect. [02:50] — I get clear about who this episode is for — and who it isn't. [05:47] — I share where my own conditioning came from and the unspoken deal I made early in life to stay safe. [09:08] — The war I lived inside for years — and why I thought I'd found a way around it. [10:51] — The moment everything caught up with me, in the least expected place, at what should have been the best time of my life. [13:27] — The choice that started everything — and what it actually looked like in practice. [16:55] — What this kind of work really is, and why most people misunderstand how change actually happens. [18:38] — What I've arrived at — and why I built The Vibrant Visionary. The Kintsugi Life: Finding Beauty in Your Brokenness with Shinjiro Tanaka

About This Episode I'm sitting down with my friend and fellow dancer Shinjiro Tanaka — a Tokyo-based visual artist whose work asks a question most of us spend our whole lives avoiding: what do we do with the broken parts? Recorded live in his atelier here in Tokyo, this conversation traces how Shin moved from advertising suits to New York streets, from graphic design to live painting in the subway at Grand Central, and ultimately to his recent series Broken, Yet Still Golden — rooted in the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken things are repaired with gold and become more beautiful for it. He shares openly about the hard chapters that shaped his work and why he believes our scars aren't something to hide — they're what make us original. This one is for anyone who has ever wondered if what broke them might also be what makes them. Key Moments [03:06] — Shin explains the concept behind Broken but Still Golden: inspired by Kintsugi, the Japanese practice of repairing broken pottery with gold, he created work that treats scars not as flaws but as what makes us original. [05:19] — I reflect on the pressure to be perfect and perform, and why the Kintsugi philosophy feels so radical — that you can become more beautiful and strong precisely because of what you've been through. [07:29] — Shin gets honest about the tension of being a self-taught, free-spirited artist in Japan, where art culture is conservative, creativity is often taught through copying, and opportunity is hard to find outside the mainstream. [11:53] — He describes the life he left behind: three and a half years in a suit at Japan's largest advertising agency, working from 7:30am until 3am with clients — and the moment the 2011 earthquake made him realize he was living inside a very small world. [23:11] — Shin opens up about the hardest year of his life and how it became the direct source material for his most recent body of work. [24:06] — He shares how painting and dancing saved him: when he creates, he stops thinking entirely, releases everything — positive and negative — and finds his way back to himself. [25:37] — Shin describes his artistic philosophy: his paintings look joyful and colorful from a distance, but up close reveal struggle, texture, and hidden detail — because life is never just one thing. [29:39] — I reflect on what his work is really about: when we can accept both the light and dark in ourselves, we can accept it in others too — and that's where real compassion begins. About Shinjiro Tanaka Shinjiro Tanaka is a Tokyo-based artist working across murals, painting, installation, live painting, and video — his practice shaped as much by street dance and improvisation as by any formal training. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Tokyo, he studied economics at Keio University before the 2011 earthquake became a turning point that led him to reconsider everything. He later moved to New York, where time at Parsons and deep immersion in street dance, music, and diverse creative communities deepened what he calls a sense of hazama — existing between worlds, between order and impulse, between Japan and abroad. His recent series Broken, Yet Still Golden explores the traces of value and dignity that remain within brokenness and vulnerability — the gold lines in his work symbolizing not just repair, but the quiet act of continuing to exist, imperfectly. In 2026, he participated in Springbeast Festival in Stockholm, one of Northern Europe's largest graffiti and public art festivals.
