    S2. 11 - OVERWHELMED BY ART | STENDHAL SYNDROME

Musings from St Paul de Vence after an encounter with a lovely Finnish lady who had returned from an afternoon in the village and was so overcome with emotion. I was checking on her when she muttered the words - “Stendhal Syndrome” - as a way of expressing what had overcome her. A vague recollection of its meaning and I was on the right path, as I had experienced it myself as a young woman coming to St Paul de Vence in France for the first time,  Once a winter enclave for artists and writers, it became a home to them as they were respected, fed and watered here in exchange for their artistic offerings and now, it is a storied place for the history and art that hangs in everyday buildings.  Musings into this deep emotional trigger in a beautiful and soulful way. that contrasts so starkly with the emotional triggers of news and events and U.N speeches by a leader who can barely string a sentence and wholly lacks in any decency, let alone artistic flair or elegance at all.  Also musings into art and literature as a common love language when you do not share a tongue in common. So moved was she by the art and art history that she moved me just as much, and in turn a hug was shared in resonance and recognition of another ‘lover.’ A reflection into Stendhals quote after visiting Florence, amid thé tombs of Michelangelo and Galileo and the encounter of ‘celestial sensations’ - a sort of ecstasy that overcame him in the contemplation of such sublime beauty.  The  invitation is to seek out in life that which moves you to deep wells of emotion. To allow beauty in art and beyond to stir your soul and to live knowing exactly what is it you would fall under the spell of.  From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 15 MIN EP, shares a story of a stranger moved by art and whose interaction engendered my own emotional connection to her.  Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  REFERENCES:  STENDHAL SYNDROME - after French author Stendhal described his experiences in Florence as an emotional phenomena. S2. 10 RESISTANCE TO THE CALL IN THE HERO’S JOURNEY

Musings from La Muse Writers Retreat in SW France where I picked up a book of conversations with Joseph Campbell called An Open Life in its wonderful library. The double entendre between the conversations being intimate in a way that opens us up to the heart and mind of Joseph Campbell - student and educator of The Hero’s Journey - and the open life he led by following his interests and ultimately his bliss, in his life, his career and his marriage. He studied Mythology his whole life and gave us the simple explanation or discernment of Myth as metaphor and not as ideology. He makes the point myth speaks to and from the heart as opposed to a rational, thought process that builds.  A reflection into one of the earliest ‘stages’ in A Hero’s Journey. That being, the Call and the subsequent resistance to it. The idea that very often we deny or resist the contract or call within us because of all it would ask of us and ask that we turn our backs to or step out of, in terms of social norms of safety and security, to follow the call. But here, Campbell asserts the security is only ever illusory, such that the uncertain path very often reveals itself as holding greater treasure. Yields more than we could ever foresee. So the invitation is to be still enough in our lives so as to hear that which beckons our hearts, our soul, our purpose and to gather the courage to, at least, get inquisitive about it. The recognition too, and something to instil in our young, is that we are, each of us, the  HERO in our own story, for all our foibles or failures, strengths and courage.  To speak into your own truth and values as you follow and seek out your purpose and your gifts is the stuff of heros.  From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 15 MIN EP, shares an ode to the life and work of Joseph Campbell, as he explores how powerfully the metaphor of myth can inform our lives when we recognise it as both invitation and guide. The conversation touches upon but one stage of The Hero’s Journey, the one that takes the greatest amount of trust and perseverance to initially follow and pursue… The Call. Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  Support the show THANK YOU FOR LISTENING PURCHASE MY STORIES AT www.jemathison.com

    S2. 9. OH DOLLY DEAR

Musings upon receipt of the news, on 25 August 2026, that our beloved Dolly Parton had passed away. She never shied away from speaking into injustice and instead poured money back into her home community, looked after her employees with good wages and their children’s education paid for. Her IMAGINATION LIBRARY was quietly founded in 1995 and she had books mailed to families every month for children 0 - 5 years so that reading became an early influence for them and any barriers were taken out so they had access to books. Thirty years of book giving to children as just one of her achievements behind the stage.  She stood against cruelty and racism and inequality and built a life in tribute to the opposite. A life that revealed exactly who she was, where her heart and values lay, as visible as her talent and looks, and a life guided by principles of faith and persistence.  Musings about her entrepreneurial smarts in retaining all her writing credits for all her life, notwithstanding tempting offers in the early days from the likes of Elvis.  Seeing clips of Dolly with her Goddaughter, Miley Cyrus, and the fun they had creating together, singing and doing ‘their’ thing together. Her death took me to places of memory of my own Goddaughter, Lexie, who we lost almost two years ago. The dreams I had of watching her talent grow and ideas we had of writing books together. The loss of her and the loss of all I thought, we thought we’d collaborate on until the day it was me that grew old snd went first. It has cut deep to see the bond of her and Miley over so many years, sharing their gifts and sharing their lives. So as the world who knew Dolly mourns her death, may it trigger a flame within, an invitation to live as fully self-expressed as you can, to speak into your truth and values without fear or favour, to seek out your purpose and your gifts and to refine them to put out into the world, your world, unapologetically and with an honest sense of humour amd joy.  She came from nothing so she worked hard at choosing it all, by choosing happiness and determination ever when people will judge or seek to shame you.  Dolly - Thank you.  I will always love you.  From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 15 MIN EP, explores how powerful a light, one person can be in this world when fully tapped in to their talents and fully present to their worth and their values.  She capably wore so many hats and never compromised on kindness and compassion of word or deed. The world has lost the kind of light it currently needs.  Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  My website: www.jemathison.com Support the show THANK YOU FOR LISTENING PURCHASE MY STORIES AT www.jemathison.com

    S2. 8. THE BEAUTIFUL GAME

Musings post the football World Cup, and the meaning I took away from behaviour on and off the field. How we act in victory is often less indicative than how we behave and treat others in defeat.  This was a tricky one to decide whether to publish as I feel I misspoke on a couple of things. So, in proceeding… please be aware I am conscious dictatorships are happening in other parts of the world and did not seek to highlight ones that have happened historically in African countries, as isolated or characteristic of the continent. Having lived in Nigeria as a child and travelled throughout parts of that continent, it is filled with memories and I love the heart and presence of people in different countries there and am cognisant in many cases, European dictatorships and autocrats have done more harm to plunder the continent. I also referred to poorer countries in referring to how big football is globally. I hope this is not interpreted in any way as superior or glib. It was not referred to with anything akin to that notion. I think I included that reference, in my head, on the basis that football requires a ball only, and for that reason is so accessible and therefore universal. The barrier to entry and understanding is low, so it becomes available to children everywhere and therein you hear the stories of young stars who came from origins of little resources. Nico Williams of Spain, whose Mum walked from Ghana, or how Ronaldo grew up wth nothing or Lamine Yamal, who was named after two gentlemen who helped his family in tough times. One piece of equipment and no barring entry level costs, like that of say F1 or hockey or most other equipment heavy sports, allows for a more equal playing field in football.  The rest of the references you may read as political, but they are not. Issues of dignity and safety are protected human rights and not affiliated views, so I will stand tall in my views on the current world leaders who openly and casually defile, degrade and cause harm to others by word, act or policy. With those disclaimers and non -disclaimers in place, the last month of football fever has allowed us to witness a microcosm of both the best in people and the worst. What counts is what we say, how we act and what we do under pressure. These are important times, institutions are being desecrated, books banned and non-invader countries being bombed and looted for autocrats to retain control and power. Just as they are in public scrutiny, we  ourselves, are also in a time of being recorded and watched, so what we say and do, even in our own small way, has a reverberation effect and will, likely, be remembered. From the Egyptian coach, to players, to the Mexican President (Claudia Sheinbaum Parton) and the Spanish PM - Pedro Sanchez - who have spoken up against the genocide of the Palestinian people - their words and actions will and do have impact. The fact they have to deal with a US President that openly mocks and reviles, publicly penalises and derides them is also on show for the world to see and judge, accordingly. Spain, holding up the World Cup as champions, after having been called ‘horrible people’ by the host country’s President speaks so much more to his lack of intellect, empathy, class and grace and THAT was what was on show throughout this tournament. The men who RULED in their skill and honour outdid many of the men who currently rule … So the invitation is to live your life as though it was a beautiful game, to know that HUMANITY always wins and to be the hero, in whatever small way you can, by speaking into injustice when you see it, by remaining humble in defeat as in victory and by being happy for your words of knowledge, empathy and kindness to follow you around, ‘be used against you’ and be your legacy and your summary…  From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 13 MIN EP, explores the contrast both on and off the field when people gather from all around the world and what becomes obvious to all about who the true heros are, when that world is watching abd taking notes…  Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  MENTIONED: Myth of The Odyssey - Homer.  His epic poem post The Iliad, written in d’accoucher hexameter - six beats. Now a movie directed by the master storytelling, Christopher Nolan. Spain, as a nation, keenly aware of what genocide and fascism look like, having been through it under the rule of Franco. Pedro Sanchez does not just reference history, he is telling the world Spain has learnt from their own history and it will not be tolerated again at home, nor will they be silent witnesses to it abroad.  Support the show THANK YOU FOR LISTENING PURCHASE MY STORIES AT www.jemathison.com

    S2. 7. EVERYTHING REDUCES

Musings from a stroll through a vide grenier in my village, that powerfully hit me with the notion that in the end, we have to give everything up, that everything in life eventually reduces. A vide grenier is akin to a flea market or a garage sale where ones own items are displayed for sale and repurposing in a new home.  While I like the idea of repurposing and relish the thought of a new life given to things and new joy gifted the inherited owner, I was caught off-guard by how sad I felt that everything in our lives gets reduced as a matter of course, a feature  of time… Perhaps it was the sale of so many books and records which had me saddened, in the knowing of what it takes to create those things.  But to reframe that sadness, I had to inquire into why we let go of things and perhaps there is beauty and purpose in knowing they no longer serve us or spark joy in us and in being intentional therefore about what we decide to hold on to and what we decide to cast off. Also that after the creation, it is for others to have the experience of joy in owning, indulging in that thing.  Thoughts were perhaps infused by musings from a previous episode about distillation and knowing what it is we want our lives to be and what we must give aside to pursue | have, that which we have identified as ours to hold | pursue | create in this life.  Musings also into how sad the notion of everything reducing can feel unless and until we use it to ignite our intentionality around choosing.  How an article in the Blackwing 602 newsletter - in the ‘Makers Series’ of conversations with a philosopher and creator - Julien de Medeiros gifted me a perspective that nothing is lost if we have lived our lives in honour and dedication to that which | those whom, we love without having ever given up on | ‘given ground’ to those dedications and desires.  So the invitation - is to be cognisant that if everything reduces, choose that and those in your life, with which and whom you will be happy remained, when much else is gone… From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 14 MIN EP, explores the idea that reduction occurs across every aspect of our lives over time, so we must seek to be present in choosing to devote time and energy to that which will remain, as other things fade or fall by the wayside of life… Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  REFERENCES BLACKWING (pencils) newsletter. S2. 6. THE PAYOFF IN THE PERSISTANCE

Musings into the notion of our diminishing ability to persist - made plain to me while reading a short book - INVISIBLE CITIES by Italo Calvino and wanting to put it down, as I was not yet clear of the message or even the premise. The sensation of restlessness amid even mild discomfort and the desire to exit before I’ve even given the book a chance or myself a real chance to adapt to the author’s gait, the stride of the book. The internal query arose of whether I have lost the ability to sit with something, stay in a book of which I know the author will grant me a payoff, an author I trust to lead me somewhere interesting and yet… the temptation was still to leave at the slightest sensation of discomfort… Musings into how much we may have lost if our attention spans have become  so short and so intolerant of discomfort or uncertainty. My dads ability to recall so much from his school days for the way he earned that knowledge, therein retaining it for many decades. To withstand and stay… and the benefit that comes when we do.  So the invitation is to trust and to stay in the book, the conversation, the hug…  This episode ends without a proper Thank you but on the idea, that to persist is to chance that unforeseen benefit. From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 11 MIN EP, explores the idea that we must persist beyond the tempting notion to cut away early from a task, a book, a conversation. That to resist and stay, with a force of effort to find out more, is the bridge to unforeseen delights that are gifted us in the instance where we choose to persist.  Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  REFERENCES BOOK INVISIBLE CITIES - Italo Calvino THE 9 MUSES OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polymnia, Terpsichore, Talia and Urania From the relationship of Mnemósine with Zeus, were the Muses born. S2. 5. BEING ABLE TO DISTIL

Musings into the notion of distillation and placing, as a priority, that which is essential to us, inclusive of our own essence and what we would wish to be remembered of us…  Inspired by an AROMA MEDITATION I led and what came through during that meditation. The notion that often things do not go how we envision them going but the lesson must be distilled from the road travelled, it’s pitfalls as well as its successes.  Musings into the book OLIQUITY by John Kay and the beauty of the unexpected path.  Also the inclusion of the poem IF by Rudyard Kipling and its message to treat adversity and triumph with equal measure, the pauper and the king with equal respect. The very task of the poet is to distil meaning from the multitude of words or emotions and to land them with delicacy and precision.  To be vigilant this in these times especially, and distil what is right, just, equitable when we are being sold messages from leaders that get spun and manipulated to capitulate and convince…  To distil compassion from events, kindness in polemic times and to distil our own moral compass in fast moving timeTheron lies the quest, even within ourselves… to distil what is true about the stories we tell ourselves and look more kindly upon others as well as on others.  From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 11 MIN EP, explores the idea that we must distill from our lives, what is important and how we wish to be moulded from our experiences and remembered by the essence of who we became…  Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  REFERENCES BOOKS OLIQUITY by John Kay  POWER IF NOW by Echart Tolle POEM IF by Rudyard Kipling AUTHOR Charles Dickens  Support the show THANK YOU FOR LISTENING PURCHASE MY STORIES AT www.jemathison.com

S2. 4. THE SCHISM - BEFORE AND AFTER

Musings into the before and after schism of grief encountered. The caution to be wary and careful around those who have dealt with deep things, their tolerance is low for the superficial or the minor incidents of life.  Inspired byan Insta post on grief by @maudsleystrong - and the one line that compelled me to share this episode. That the person you become after deep grief is an altogether different one and that the daily incidents or inconveniences “lose their authority” over your mood. This resonated with me and hit hard for its accuracy. The notion that a wrong coffee order, an invitation to gossip or complain loses its authority over you, after everything has been stripped bare in grief…  Story shared of a clock on my wall being shattered by a friend in grief, the loss of her first baby. I am sweeping up the shards but she has barely blinked, feeling like my heart was broken as I loved this clock. It was a present bought in a faraway land from friends as a final gift before I left… and yet… and yet… the fact it did not register was to show me my heart was not, in fact, broken at all - but, in contrast, hers was.  A profundity of grief I would not truly understand for many years.  Sharing the snippets of actor, Keanu Reeves, too and the choice to stay gentle and kind after tragedy, discerning as he did, that the earth angels are those who walk among us, where grief has humbled rather than hardened, in the end.  The question Tina Turner asked potential suitors and the answer that touched her heart from the one who became her husband and enduring love of her life. From corporate lawyer to full time writer, Julia Mathison, in this 12 MIN EP, explores the capacity to sit with wounds and be mutated from them, into kinder, gentler beings… so the caution for others becomes, to tread well with them for they entertain neither fools or superficiality after the schism. Such things lose authority over them, so the general populace caution is to treat their gentleness as a feature of their strength and character and not a bug… Always a personal musing, featuring personal preferences, with a desired message to be kind, follow your hearts direction and accept the calling of your innate gifts.  NOTES: PS - excuse my struggle to pronounce the word SCHISM. I could not find a word to take its place so decided to press ‘publish’ anyway. Similarly, it may not be clear but I am aware of the difference between chasm (the gap) and schism (the split), which is the one I was seeking to share, without realising until I came to say it out loud that I was unable to pronounce it fluidly.  Go easy. Be gentle!  My website: www.jemathison.com Support the show THANK YOU FOR LISTENING PURCHASE MY STORIES AT www.jemathison.com
