#39: Why 90 Minutes is the Perfect Float

Ninety minutes? What am I supposed to do in there for ninety minutes? We hear this all the time. So in this episode, JoJo and Kyle dig into the question we get more than almost any other: why do we book floats at ninety minutes, and do you actually need that long? Here's the thing. There's no magic switch that flips at minute ninety. But a lot of the modern float research uses ninety-minute sessions, and what researchers have measured is pretty fascinating. In one study, many physiological changes showed up within roughly the first 15 minutes and kept going through the session. In another, floating was compared to watching a relaxing nature documentary (not sitting in traffic), and the float still came out ahead on anxiety, muscle tension and relaxation. We also get into: Why the first 20 minutes can feel busy (hello, snow globe) Why you might lose track of where your body ends What brain imaging shows when you close a few "browser tabs" Why 60 minutes works too, and why we still call 90 the sweet spot The cortisol claim you'll hear everywhere, and why the research is more mixed than people say And honestly, the biggest reason ninety minutes feels so good might be the simplest one. Most of us never give anything ninety uninterrupted minutes anymore. Especially nothing. If you've been curious about floating, or you've floated once and spent the whole time wondering when it would "work," this one's for you. Book your first 90-minute float at your nearest Altered States studio, and send this episode to the friend who can't sit still. For general educational purposes, not medical advice. Please talk with your physician about any health questions. You don't have to do more. You just have to stay.

State Shift #04: Gratitude that Doesn't Feel Fake

Gratitude sounds great in theory… until you're having a terrible week and someone tells you to "just focus on the positive." No thanks. In this episode of 15-Minute State Shift, we're talking about gratitude in a way that actually feels real. Not toxic positivity. Not pretending everything is fine. Not writing "I'm grateful for my family, my health, and my home" on autopilot while feeling absolutely nothing. We're getting into why gratitude can be especially powerful during hard seasons, how our brains naturally latch onto what went wrong, and why the good moments often disappear from memory if we don't slow down long enough to notice them. The shift is simple: get specific. Instead of "I'm grateful for my family," maybe it's, "I'm grateful Kyle made me laugh when I was taking everything way too seriously." Instead of "I'm grateful for my work," maybe it's one conversation, one win, or one tiny moment that reminded you why you care. Because gratitude is not about convincing yourself life is perfect. It's about reminding yourself that the hard thing is not the only thing happening. You can be stressed and grateful. You can be disappointed and grateful. You can be in a messy season and still notice something good. Both can be true. This week's State Shift is a simple 7-day gratitude practice that helps you capture three specific moments each night and actually remember why they mattered. Your State Shift this week: stop trying to feel grateful for everything. Start noticing the few things that were actually worth remembering. Subscribe for a new 15-Minute State Shift every Tuesday, and if this episode makes you think of someone you're grateful for, send it to them and tell them why.

#38: Peptides 101: What They Are, Oral vs. Injectable, and Our Top Peptides for Wellness

Peptides are having a moment. They're in wellness clinics, all over social media, casually dropped into conversations like everyone has always known what BPC-157 means… and meanwhile, a lot of us are thinking, okay, but what actually is a peptide? This episode is your no-BS starting point. We're breaking down what peptides are, how they work as tiny signaling tools in the body, and the real difference between oral and injectable options, without making you feel like you need a biochemistry degree to keep up. We're also getting into some of the names you may have heard floating around, including Glutathione, GLOW, Ipamorelin/CJC, NAD+, and BPC-157, and why people are exploring them for things like energy, recovery, sleep, skin health, body composition, and healthy aging. But here's the part we really care about: peptides are not magic, and the goal is not to collect them like Pokémon. They're tools. Some have more research behind them than others, some require medical oversight, and none of them replace the wildly unsexy basics like sleeping, eating enough protein, moving your body, hydrating, and managing stress. So if you've been peptide-curious but also slightly suspicious of the hype, this episode is for you. We'll help you understand what questions to ask, what to watch out for, and how to think about peptides as part of a bigger wellness routine instead of the newest shortcut promising to fix your entire life. Disclaimer: This episode is for educational purposes only and is not medical advice. Peptides are not one-size-fits-all, and some require a prescription, medical evaluation, and guidance from a licensed provider.

State Shift #03: Imperfect Wellness—Maybe You Need to Do Less

If your wellness routine is starting to feel like a second job, this episode is for you. In this episode of 15-Minute State Shift, we're talking about something that sounds almost too simple to count as wellness: doing less. Because when you already feel stressed, depleted, and stretched thin, the answer may not be another supplement, another workout, another morning routine, another journal, another app, another habit tracker… you get the idea. Sometimes wellness quietly turns into one more area of life we're trying to perform perfectly. And suddenly the thing that was supposed to help us feel better is just another list we're failing to keep up with. So instead of asking, "What else should I be doing?" we're asking a different question: "What can I remove?" We'll talk about why more effort does not always equal better health, how constant inputs can keep you feeling overstimulated, and why creating a little margin in your life may be more powerful than adding one more "good for you" thing. You'll also walk away with a simple wellness subtraction audit to help you figure out what you can reduce, simplify, or let go of for the next seven days. No replacing it with a new habit. No optimizing the empty space. Just… space. Wild concept, I know. Your State Shift this week: stop trying to earn wellness by doing more. See what happens when you give yourself permission to do less. Subscribe for a new 15-Minute State Shift every Tuesday, and send this episode to the friend who somehow responds to burnout by adding another thing to their calendar.
