"I Know Better, So I Do Better": Emotional Intelligence in Action (With Dr. Will Washington)

💬 Got something to share? Text or voice note me Understanding something intellectually is one thing. Catching yourself before you react the old way is where the real work shows. Dr. Will Washington is back on The Season of Self Love! In this Mindset Monday conversation, we pick up where we left off on emotional intelligence and ask what actually happens in the gap between feeling an old impulse and choosing to respond differently. Dr. Will, a licensed therapist, speaker, and longtime friend of the show, breaks down the survival instincts behind that moment, the idea that we each have a biological age, an emotional age, and a spiritual age (and that it matters which one is speaking up), and why emotional intelligence is about awareness, not just articulation. We talk about "rupture and repair," how to set boundaries as "if-then" statements instead of waiting for people to guess your triggers, why consideration is a love language, and why attachment and connection are not the same thing. Along the way, you'll hear both of us get real about what it looks like when the unhealed version of us shows up, and how to honor that moment without being run by it. We talk about: What's happening in the gap between an old impulse and a new choiceBiological age, emotional age, and spiritual age: which one is speaking up in this moment? Why emotional intelligence is a spectrum of awareness, and how it differs from emotional articulationWhy caregivers (and anyone who loves someone through a hard season) often write themselves out of their own storyHow to tell when something is "heavy," and listening to what your body is telling youRupture and repair: owning your part, and deciding together whether to continue or let a lesson be a lessonWhy triggers are often unresolved work and not proof that someone caused harmBoundaries as "if-then" statements: it's not other people's job to know your triggers, it's yoursConsideration as a love languageAttachment vs. connectionWhy delivery matters, and sharing space for repair when it doesn't landHealing as a lifestyle, not a destination: "Heal always"If you've ever done the work, understood the pattern, and still felt the old version of you rise up, this episode is about what to do in that exact moment. A Gentle Invitation From This Episode This week, you're invited to notice one moment when you feel the old impulse rising. Pause. You don't have to do it perfectly. Just notice it and catch it before it catches you. In This Episode Welcome back, Dr. Will — what he's been working on, including a talk at Oxford on mind and music and a men's group called Brothers Healing Brothers in ClevelandGuided meditation — "I can pause. I can breathe. I can choose."The gap between impulse and choice — survival instincts and what feels unsafeWhich age is speaking? — biological, emotional, and spiritualAwareness vs. articulation — emotional intelligence in actionWhen your body says "this is heavy""I know better, so I do better" — and why it isn't about thinking you're better than anyoneRupture and repair — what they are and how to do themHonoring your peace — sometimes you have to disrupt the peace to honor your peaceBoundaries as "if-then" statements — and consideration as a love languageTriggers and blind spots — when it's about unresolved workAttachment vs. connectionDelivery, harm, and repairClosing reflection — the pause is where your power livesDr. Will's closing words — "Be kind to yourself and heal always."About Dr. Will Washington Dr. Will Washington is a licensed therapist with nearly 15 years of experience, a speaker, and the voice behind the "Heal Always" philosophy that has shaped much of this show. He recently spoke at Oxford University on mind and music (using music in therapeutic healing) and leads "Brothers Healing Brothers," experiential groups for men in the Cleveland area. His work with the Washington Wellness Institute focuses on modernizing how we take mental illness into holistic wellness and making healing a lifestyle. Boundaries Start With Internal Safety: Stop Over-Giving and Learn to Have Your Own Back (With Barb Nangle)

💬 Got something to share? Text or voice note me What if the thing that finally changes your boundaries isn't another tool or another insight, but learning to feel safe inside your own life? This week on Wisdom Wednesday, I'm joined by Barb Nangle, a boundaries coach, speaker, author, and host of the Fragmented to Whole podcast. After nearly 40 years of therapy and personal development, Barb entered 12-step recovery at 52 and discovered that her real issue was never a lack of insight. It was a lack of internal safety. She helps professional women stop over-giving and start building the internal system that makes real boundaries possible. We talk about why boundaries are the antidote to codependency, what "internal safety" actually means (hint: it isn't feeling calm all the time), and how to tell the difference between the discomfort of dysfunction and the discomfort of growth. We also get into why guilt shows up when you set a boundary, why "being the helper" can become an identity, and one small thing you can try today to start building internal safety, no one else's cooperation required. We talk about: What internal safety is, and what it isn't: not constant calm, but not letting someone else's upset stop you from holding your boundaryBoundaries as the antidote to codependencyThe discomfort of dysfunction (familiar and draining) vs. the discomfort of growth (new, temporary, and healing)Why guilt after setting a boundary is proportional to how much you've been abandoning yourselfHow "helper, fixer, rescuer" can become an identity, and why stepping out of that role feels like breaking the rulesWhy we look for safety in other people's approval, and why the real path to safety is internalTelling yourself the truth when someone's upset with you: "I'm not a bad person. I haven't done anything wrong. I'm not in trouble."Becoming emotionally available to yourself first, and how that changed the way Barb relates to othersA small step you can try today: boundaries with your own thoughts, and "changing the channel"Collecting evidence that you can do the new thing and be okayIf you're an over-giver, a people pleaser, or someone who feels guilty every time you say no, this conversation offers a gentler way in. Emotional Intelligence: The Language Nobody Taught You (And How It Becomes Your Boundaries)

💬 Got something to share? Text or voice note me For years, I thought emotional intelligence meant managing your feelings: staying calm, staying in control. What I'm learning is almost the opposite. Emotional intelligence is understanding what you're feeling so deeply that you can make choices that honor both yourself and the people you love. In this Mindset Monday episode, I'm sitting down with you to talk about what that looks like in real life. I share a season of caregiving for a parent with dementia as one example of what changed when I stopped trying to fix or save someone and started learning to be present with them, and with myself. We talk about why nobody teaches us this language, why we're taught to suppress, push through, and "not feel too deeply," and how the feelings we try to manage often have something important to tell us: grief says something matters, frustration says we're trying to control what we can't, helplessness says we can't save someone but we can be with them. From there, we bridge to boundaries: the real kind, not walls or punishments, but the ability to say, "I hear you, and I also hear myself, and I'm not going to abandon myself to save you." We talk about: What emotional intelligence actually is: feeling without judgment, understanding what the feeling is telling you, and choosing in a way that honors you and the people you care aboutWhy we're taught to control and suppress feelings, and why that's the opposite of emotional intelligenceWhat grief, frustration, and helplessness can be trying to tell youMoving from trying to fix or save someone to protecting, being present, and prioritizing your own wellbeingHow using The Four Agreements as a daily anchor helped with communication and compassionWhy "managing someone else's emotions" leaves us exhausted and resentfulHow emotional intelligence becomes the foundation for real boundariesStaying grounded in the moment when someone challenges you: you don't have to argue to protect yourselfWhat self-love really is: not just affirmations and bubble baths, but understanding what you feel and choosing accordinglyIf you're exhausted from trying to make someone else okay so you can feel okay, this episode is for you. A Gentle Invitation From This Episode This week, you're invited to notice one relationship, whether it's a partner, a family member, or a friend. Where are you trying to manage their emotions instead of understanding your own? What are you feeling, and what is that feeling telling you? In This Episode Opening — redefining emotional intelligenceGrounding practice — "You don't have to understand your feelings to honor them."A real-life example — caregiving, frustration, and the shift from fixing to being presentWhat emotional intelligence actually is — and why nobody teaches itUsing the Four Agreements as an anchor — in communication, compassion, and not taking things personallyWhat grief, frustration, and helplessness are telling youThe bridge to boundaries — why managing other people's feelings leads to resentmentChoosing not to argue — grounding yourself in a challenging conversationReal-life application — checking in with yourself before and during connectionWhat self-love really isClosing affirmations — "I can feel deeply and still protect myself."What's next — a worksheet on the new Substack, and a Wednesday conversation about boundariesResources & Links 📝 Companion worksheet — available on The Season of Self Love Substack: substack.com/@theseasonofselflove 🌸 Start your self-love journey today — 7 days free on Elevate Me: studio.com/nyomi or elevatemenyomi.com 🌐 The Season of Self Love website: theseasonofselflove.com 📺 The Season of Self Love is now on YouTube — subscribe for videos, episodes, and behind-the-scenes content This episode is brought to you by Elevate Me Self-Discovery App. Connect with Nyomi Instagram / TikTok: @theseasonofsellovepodcastFacebook: theseasonofselflove Elevate Me: Self Discovery App 4-phase self-love journey: meditations, workbooks, coaching chat & journaling. Healing Heartbreak and Betrayal in the Body: Why Understanding Isn't the Same as Healing (With Ben Ufana)

💬 Got something to share? Text or voice note me Understanding your wounds is not the same as healing them. You can know exactly why you keep going back to someone who isn't right for you and still feel powerless to stop. This week on Wisdom Wednesday, I'm joined by Ben Ufana, a neurosomatic breathwork facilitator and meditation teacher who has spent nearly a decade helping people heal from breakups, divorce, abandonment, rejection, and ghosting. Ben trained for 17 years in the internal martial arts, apprenticed with a traditional Kiowa medicine man, and has spent decades studying how the body holds what the mind can't always explain. He shares the story behind the breath-and-awareness practice he developed out of his own childhood and relational wounding, and walks us through how it works: bringing a person and the dynamic between you into your awareness, noticing where the emotion lives in your body, and breathing with it until it moves. We talk about why we can't work with what we aren't feeling, how numbing and suppressing keep us stuck in repeating patterns, why denying a painful feeling is a form of rejecting ourselves, and why this practice is a deep form of self-love. Ben also shares how these tools can be used in the middle of real life, with your eyes open, in conversation with someone you love. We talk about: Why understanding a wound intellectually is important but not the same as healing itHow heartbreak often reaches back to much older wounds, and why we repeat the same relational patternsThe body as a place where grief, hurt, anger, and betrayal are storedA guided look at Ben's practice: bring the person into awareness, notice the emotion, locate it in the body, and breathe into itHow emotions often intensify, shift, and move through a progression before they releaseWhy avoiding our emotions means rejecting parts of ourselves, and how feeling them is a form of honesty and self-loveUsing the practice with your eyes open: in conversation, with a loved one, or even with a petA note on boundaries: respecting someone else's "no" when you're working with desireWhy body work, grounding practices, and skilled support can make this work safer and deeperHow stress and unprocessed emotion build up in the body, and why staying fluid keeps us growingThis conversation is for anyone who has done the thinking, understood the pattern, and is ready to feel their way through it. If you are severely traumatized, Ben notes that working with a psychotherapist or experienced guide can help you build a strong enough foundation. In This Episode Opening — understanding your wounds vs. healing themMeet Ben Ufana — breathwork facilitator, meditation teacher, and lifelong student of how the body holds emotionBen's story — from a young fascination with Native American healing traditions, to apprenticing with a Kiowa medicine man, to developing his own practice from his own heartbreakWhy numbing keeps us stuck — and why "you can't heal what you don't feel"The practice, step by step — person and dynamic in awareness, emotion, location in the body, breathWhat to expect — emotions that intensify, move, and progress toward acceptance and letting goHonesty and self-love — why feeling your authentic responses means being present with the parts of you that are hurtingPracticing in real life — with eyes open, in conversation, with loved onesPatterns and reenactment — why we keep attracting the same relationships, and how healing shifts that over timeSupport and tools — body work, Ayurveda, acupuncture, skilled healers, and internal martial artsStagnation and fluidity — how stress accumulates in the body and how practice keeps us growingWhere to find BenAbout Ben Ufana Ben Ufana is a neurosomatic breathwork facilitator and meditation teacher with 17 years of training in the internal martial arts (Xinyi Quan, Bagua Zhang, Tai Chi, and Qigong) and an apprenticeship with a traditional Kiowa medicine man. Direction Over Expansion: Building UP, Not OUT (A Pivot Isn't a Setback)

💬 Got something to share? Text or voice note me After my 54th birthday, I made a decision that looked like stepping back. I pushed Ask Nyomi: Bridging the Gap to 2027. Not because I don't want to do it, but because I was being pulled in too many directions and running on desperation instead of direction. In this Mindset Monday episode, I'm sitting down with you to talk about the difference between moving out and moving up. A short conversation with Dr. Will Washington shifted my whole perspective: don't look outside for opportunities to strengthen your worth. Build up what you already have. I share what it looked like to come home from the Revival in Atlanta feeling more at home than I had in a long time, then open my calendar to a full slate of good, worthy things, and what changed when I stopped trying to do them all at once. We talk about why a pivot is a strategy and not a setback, why frantic energy is something people can feel, and why completion doesn't mean doing everything. It means doing what completes the cycle. I also share what's next for Season 6 and a new Substack with downloadable Mindset Monday actions. We talk about: Why limiting your direction is not the same as limiting your powerMoving out (scattered, frantic, trying to prove your value) vs. moving up (focused, strategic, building mastery)Why a pivot can be the strategy, not a step backward: the goal hasn't changed, only the strategyHow desperation and direction feel different, to you and to the people around youWhy doing less with your whole self can be the power moveWhy I'm pouring into The Season of Self Love this seasonA new Substack with downloadable Mindset Monday prompts and actionsIf your calendar is full of good things and you're feeling pulled in every direction, this one is for you. Reclaiming Your Story: The Real Reason Manifestation Isn't Working (With Kelsey Aida)

💬 Got something to share? Text or voice note me What if the real reason manifestation isn't working has nothing to do with doing it wrong, and everything to do with a part of you that doesn't feel safe receiving what you're asking for? This week, I'm joined by Kelsey Aida, energetic alignment coach, best-selling author, and co-host of the High Vibing It podcast. Kelsey focuses on the missing piece in manifestation that most people don't talk about: resistance, and how self-love is often the real doorway to change. We talk about reclaiming your story after an identity-shaking loss (Kelsey's path began with a dance-ending injury and a long dark night of the soul), why the "newness" of who you're becoming can feel dangerous to your subconscious, and why self-sabotage is really misguided self-love. We also get into feeling your feelings in your body instead of thinking about them, the difference between toxic positivity and true alignment, how to tell intuition from fear, and what it looks like to love the parts of yourself you've been rejecting. I even had a healing moment live on air, and I think you might too. We talk about: What "reclaiming your story" means in the context of manifestation and alignmentHow contrast, loss, and rock-bottom moments can become a stepping-off point instead of proof you're not enoughWhy the fear of the unknown is often really a fear of not belonging, and why "it's safe to be me" is a powerful reminderResistance explained without shame: the "but" attached to what you want, and how to listen for itWhy self-sabotage is misguided self-love, and how to have a loving conversation with the part of you that's scaredFeeling your feelings somatically (in the body) instead of thinking about them, and letting emotion move like a waveAlignment vs. toxic positivity: why being authentic matters more than being positive all the timeWhat self-love looks like when you're anxious or feeling unworthy: making your own well-being important to youGetting curious about anxiety, sadness, and other parts of you you've rejected, and thanking them for trying to protect youIntuition vs. fear: "Fear screams, intuition whispers"A deathbed "future pacing" exercise for big decisionsIf you've ever wanted something good and found yourself pulling away right when it arrived, this conversation offers a gentler way to understand it. What's Really Blocking Your Manifestation? It's Not What You Think

💬 Got something to share? Text or voice note me You've visualized it, affirmed it, and put it on the vision board. You're asking for the relationship, but you're still single. You're declaring abundance, but you feel blocked. And you're wondering what you're doing wrong. In this Mindset Monday episode, I'm sitting down with you to talk about the part of manifestation nobody puts in the course: resistance. What if it isn't a personal failure or proof that you're not believing hard enough? What if it's a part of you that doesn't feel safe receiving yet, and is trying to protect you? I share how I used to shame myself for "blocking" my own progress, how a big fear about taxes once held me back when I was making more money, and what changed when I got curious instead of critical. We also talk about the big "but" that hides inside what we say we want, and why you don't have to become someone else to receive it. You just have to trust who you already are. We talk about: Why manifestation can stall even when you're doing "everything right"Resistance as protection, not a flaw: a part of you asking, "Are we safe? Are we ready?"Why shaming yourself for being "in your own way" only makes it heavierThe big "but" attached to what you want: money, but...; relationship, but...; visibility, but...What happens when half of you moves forward and the other half holds backGetting curious: what is this resistance protecting me from?Day 29 of the birthday manifestation countdown: "I manifest complete trust in the person I have become."If you've been asking for something while quietly hoping it doesn't happen, this one is for you. A Gentle Invitation From This Episode This week, you're invited to notice if there's something you're asking for while also kind of hoping it doesn't happen. No fixing, no judging. Just get curious about what that part of you is trying to protect. What the Heck Is Self-Love Anyway? Healing Through Heartbreak and Loss (With Jonathon Aslay)

💬 Got something to share? Text or voice note me You know how to love other people. You know how to show up for everyone else. But somewhere along the way, loving yourself became the hardest relationship of all. That's not a character flaw. Nobody ever taught you how. This week, I'm kicking off Season 6 Wisdom Wednesdays with Jonathon Aslay, author of What the Heck Is Self-Love Anyway? and a dating and relationship coach on a mission to help both men and women fully love themselves. After a divorce, a lost career, and the loss of his 19-year-old son, Connor, in 2018, Jonathon's own grief sent him on a soul-searching journey that changed how he coaches, writes, and lives. We talk about what self-love really means, nurturing the emotional "six-year-old" inside all of us, the difference between self-love and selfishness, why dating has become a form of entertainment, how insecure attachment pulls us away from our own sovereignty, and why he believes gratitude is the highest form of love. He also shares one real action you can take today, especially if you're in the middle of heartbreak or self-doubt. We talk about: What self-love is — and the one thing Jonathon would add to his book: nurturing your emotional six-year-oldHow divorce, loss, and a long season of depression became the starting point for his healing workGrieving with love instead of suffering, and why gratitude and acceptance became his foundationTaking personal ownership of your life instead of living from victim consciousnessThe line between self-love and selfishnessWhy so few of us can say why we want a relationship or what its purpose isInsecure attachment, and how attaching to someone in an unhealthy way can pull you away from your own sovereigntyLoving on yourself versus fully loving yourself — and why growth is enoughOne action to start today: a fear and limiting-beliefs inventory, with forgivenessReclaimed & Unashamed: reclaiming his spiritualityIf you're in the middle of heartbreak, loss, or self-doubt and aren't sure where to start, this conversation offers a gentle place to begin.
