The Man, the Box and 700 Planes a Day

Meet António Manuel, the wonderfully curious man behind Lisbon Finals, a project monitoring the hundreds of aircraft flying over Lisbon every day. Born in Portugal, raised in Paris and now living in Alvalade, António found himself directly beneath one of Europe's busiest urban flight paths. Rather than simply complain about the noise, he decided to build something. With a little help from artificial intelligence, a homemade box full of sensors and a healthy dose of geekiness, António created Lisbon Finals, a platform tracking aircraft movements, noise levels, vibrations and pollution. What started as a conversation over lunch with friends has become a fascinating project attracting media attention and raising questions about the future of Lisbon's airport. In this special People Of Lisbon Rough Cut, we're sharing the extended, unfiltered audio from our afternoon at António's apartment. We talk about everything from growing up in Paris and returning to his Portuguese roots to his childhood ambition of becoming a volcanologist, Cristiano Ronaldo's private jet, his remarkably quiet turtle Darwin, and why he believes Lisbon residents deserve eight hours of uninterrupted sleep. There are plenty of laughs along the way, and quite a few planes overhead! Our Rough Cut podcast series takes you beyond the finished films, giving you more of the conversations, unexpected tangents and little moments that don't always make the final edit. It's a chance to get to know the fascinating characters of Lisbon a little better. A huge thank you to our wonderful sponsors, Practice Portuguese, Moviinn, Home Lisbon Hostel and Fresh Legal Group, whose support helps us continue documenting the extraordinary people who make this city what it is. And a special thank you to our charity partner, Lisbon Project, for their incredible work bringing people and communities together. 🎧 Discover Lisbon Finals: https://lisbonfinals.com ❤️ Join Club People Of Lisbon: https://www.peopleoflisbon.com People Of Lisbon - Telling the stories of the people who make Lisbon, Lisbon. Lisbon’s Punk Rock Lawyer

Meet Luís Alves da Costa - Lisbon’s Punk Rock Lawyer. In this extended People Of Lisbon conversation, we spend the day with Luís: tax lawyer at Fresh Legal Group, metalhead, surfer, guitar player, husband, father of three and one-time aspiring rock star. At his home in Lisbon, Luís talks about growing up in Porto, dreaming of playing Wembley, his many unsuccessful garage bands, his love of AC/DC and Metallica, becoming a lawyer, ditching the suit-and-tie version of himself, and balancing work with family life. There’s also a photograph of Luís as a child with his mother that he keeps beside his desk. On the difficult days, he looks at that kid, reminds himself how far he’s come, and gives him a little fist bump. We then head out into Campo de Ourique, find the tree where Luís likes to sit and ponder life — which we officially name Angus during the shoot — before visiting Fresh Legal Group and discovering what life is actually like inside a rather unconventional Lisbon law firm. This is the longer, rough-cut audio from our day filming Luís for People Of Lisbon - with more of the conversations, tangents and moments that didn’t make it into the finished film. Rock, taxes and Lisbon. 🤘 People Of Lisbon - telling the story of Lisbon, one person at a time. With thanks to our sponsors Fresh Legal Group, Practice Portuguese, Moviinn and Home Lisbon Hostel.

She’s Photographed Hundreds of Lisboners | Meet Rita Ansone

For more than six years, Rita Ansone has been the photographer behind People Of Lisbon, photographing 220+ people for the series and hundreds more across the city. Now we finally turn the microphone - and camera - on her. In this long-form rough cut, Rita talks about growing up in Riga, leaving Latvia with a one-way ticket to England, living across Europe and eventually finding herself stuck in Lisbon when the pandemic arrived. We dig through her photographic archive, talk about her mother working in a photo lab, where her love of photography came from, her life in Lisbon, what catches her eye when she takes a photograph - and what six years of photographing the people of this city has meant to her. Uncut, unpolished and a little more intimate. This is the longer conversation behind our special People of Lisbon film about the woman who is normally on the other side of the lens. Rita Ansone - Lisbon’s most iconic photographer you’ve never heard of.

He Left New York to Open an Irish Bar in Lisbon

Meet Fergal Titley, a Dubliner, actor and bar owner who spent 13 years living in New York before leaving it all behind to start again in Lisbon. In this extended People Of Lisbon conversation, Fergal talks about growing up in Glasnevin, training as an actor, life in New York, his playwright father, Samuel Beckett, Irishness, moving to Lisbon and turning a long-held idea into reality with the opening of The Wake — his Irish bar at the top of a Lisbon hill. We also talk about what makes a truly great Irish bar, the meaning behind The Wake, creating a sense of comfort and community, and, naturally, the art of pouring a proper pint of Guinness. This is the longer, rough-cut conversation behind our People Of Lisbon film — more stories, more tangents and more time with Fergal. People Of Lisbon is supported by Practice Portuguese, Fresh Portugal and Moviinn.
