Every year, the world seems to go faster. Noise floods our earbuds, and perfectly pictured people flood our timelines. In a culture of influence, you can find a ‘solution’ for this on every corner. Still, these ‘solutions’ also fail us. 'Let There Be Light' hopes to answer questions like: “how do I find purpose?” or “can there really be peace in the brokenness?” Hosted by journalist Mary Caltrider, this podcast goes beyond her usual 3 minute stories. By talking with vowed religious and inspirations, this show will reveal how even in the brokenness, you can still find the beauty.

    Episode 17: Looking at our Faith through the eyes of a child

    This week, I am joined by the most wonderful and kindest soul, Mary Serafino! Mary is the Communications Manager at the Catholic Leadership Institute where she helps with the formation of priests, bishops, religious, deacons and lay persons. Prior to this, she worked for Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. An active member at the historic Basilica of St. Louis the King, “The Old Cathedral,” Mary is also a catechist in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, and is trained to serve infants, toddlers, and children ages 3-6. She teaches in the atrium at St. Francis Xavier College Church. Mary gives the most beautiful testimonies of her time with these children. In our conversation, we look at our Faith through the eyes of the child. She touches on how to teach the faith to little ones, but also how to surrender and let a child be curious. I also loved her advice on navigating expectations and finding the peace in the chaos of a life of a 4 year old. Great episode for parents, but also, those who are seeking that child like confidence in their faith life. Enjoy!

During his travels, Goodwin vanished in a supposed safe-zone run by the Kurds on the Turkish border. What followed was an extraordinary fight to bring him home. A native of Rhode Island, she is a graduate of Franciscan University of Steubenville having received a Bachelor’s degree in Theology with a concentration in Religious Education and a Masters in Evangelization. Over the past 17 years, she has worked in the field of youth ministry in parishes and schools in Tennessee, Illinois, New Jersey, and Kansas. She currently is the vocation director for her community.     Let's talk about THE EUCHARIST! Dr. Feingold is a Professor of Theology at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis. He is the author of The Eucharist: Mystery of Presence, Sacrifice, and Communion (2018); Faith Comes from What Is Heard: An Introduction to Fundamental Theology (2016); a three-volume series entitled The Mystery of Israel and the Church (2010); and The Natural Desire to See God According to St. Thomas Aquinas and His Interpreters (2010). OH! Did I mention he actually grew up atheist?!  Dr. Feingold shares his own story of conversion: how he went from not believing in a God to falling in love with God! He takes us through step by step how the Eucharist is a Sacrament of love. He also shares how the mass is to be much more than receiving. Plus, I ask silly things that I’ve never wanted to ask out loud...like “how did the Apostles know they were supposed to keep this going?” and “How did the mass even get formed?”  Yet above all, he shares how the Eucharist changes your heart.  It is a conversation that has changed the way I view not only the mass, but Catholicism, too. Well, that’s what you can learn from…the Bread Monk!  Father Dominic Garramone is a monk of Saint Bede Abbey in Peru IL where he is the chaplain. He certainly wears a lot of hats from monk to educator to baker and tv host! He was the host of the PBS cooking show “Breaking Bread with Father Dominic” from 1999 to 2001, and has written 11 cookbooks. His most recent book "Thursday Night Pizza: Second Edition" elevates the usual backyard pizza oven. We chat how he uses baking as an analogy for our own spirituality, and the power and community that comes from sharing a meal together. He also gives insight on how to better balance work and life. Fr Dominic gives practical tools from his monastic life that can be beneficial for those working or those staying at home with a house full of kids.
