Exploring The Word

Knox Oakville

Listen to the teachings as followers of Christ from Knox Presbyterian Church in Oakville. Our Ministers consider it a profound privilege and responsibility to equip the saints for the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:12). This means helping us discover again and again what it means to be a community of grace-sustained image-bearers of the Creator, sent out into a broken world that’s just waiting to be made whole again.

    “The Trellis of Self-Control”

This 10th message “The Trellis of Self-Control” is the last message of a 10 Weeks on the Fruit of the Spirit "Grounded and Growing—Bearing Fruit" lead by The Reverend Jacquelyn Foxall at Knox Presbyterian Church in Oakville, Ontario, July 19th, 2026 Service... Throughout Lent we explored how being rooted in the Good News of Christ results in growing and blooming in our lives. What a celebration we had on Easter Sunday morning! Carrying on with the theme of growth, for the next 10 weeks, we are discovering what else grows in us as we abide in Christ: From the flower comes fruit which provides nourishment and sustenance .While the Fruit of the Spirit are characteristics we’re called to embody, Paul makes it clear in Galatians 5 that this list isn’t a to-do list, but a promise. Those who live by the Spirit will bear good fruit. This fruitfulness isn’t the result of self-effort and personal striving, but comes by abiding in Christ, as a branch to a vine, that we might experience the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit. The Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) aren't prescriptive... They are descriptive! The Fruit of the Spirit describes the effect of a life lived abiding in Christ, as a branch to a vine. Our series is loosely based on a series by Laura De Jong for Reformed Worship by the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. Associated Scripture: Psalm 23, Mark 9:42–50, Galatians 5:1, 13-26
