Criterion Corner

I found this podcast through the Eraserhead episode and was introduced to three incredible Japanese films and the beauty of the Criterion Collection and filmography in general. I’m a life long movie lover, but I’m relatively new to the pantheon of foreign films and the majority of the Criterion Collection. I’m really excited to listen to more deep dives. We need more episodes!

Only the first show and so I’ll give it another chance. The analysis of Late Spring was woefully incomplete and inadequate. The presenters wasted a lot of time talking about themselves. Who cares? So many key elements were missed &/or misunderstood. The aunt was no “minor” character. The father’s fake marriage plans. Noriko’s bicycle “date”. The Coca Cola sign - in an occupied Japan. Noriko’s divorced friend. The father daughter trip - with the bedtime scene & the lingering & famous vase shot. There’s tons of literature on this film. A top ten movie for me. But, if I had never seen it, the way it was presented would make me not want to.
