AI, Bias and the Future of Healthcare

Send us Fan Mail In Part 2 of the ANEW Insight Podcast, Dr. Supatra Tovar continues her conversation with Dr. Ami Bhatt, cardiologist, digital health strategist, Chief Innovation Officer at the American College of Cardiology, and Chair of the FDA Digital Health Advisory Committee. Their discussion moves beyond what AI can do and focuses on a more complex question: How do we use AI responsibly, equitably, and effectively in healthcare? The conversation begins with health equity and bias in artificial intelligence. Dr. Bhatt explains that AI systems depend on data, and when healthcare datasets do not adequately represent the population, the algorithms built from them may also produce unequal results. She discusses the importance of improving representation in research and clinical trials so that future healthcare technologies better reflect the patients they are intended to serve. Dr Ami Bhatt part TWO Dr. Tovar and Dr. Bhatt then explore how digital health, remote monitoring, and wearable technology may help expand access to care, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Dr. Bhatt describes how AI could support community health workers, pharmacists, and other trusted healthcare resources by helping identify which patients may need more urgent evaluation and directing them toward appropriate care. Dr Ami Bhatt part TWO The discussion also examines the importance of representation in clinical research. Dr. Bhatt describes efforts to train clinicians in historically underrepresented communities to participate in clinical trials and explains why diverse research populations are essential when the resulting data may eventually be used to train AI systems. She also discusses how AI itself may help researchers identify more diverse participants for clinical studies. Dr Ami Bhatt part TWO The conversation then turns to some of the emerging ethical concerns surrounding AI-generated health information. Dr. Bhatt raises questions about advertising appearing alongside medical information generated by AI tools and how difficult it may be for patients to separate health guidance from commercial messaging. She also reflects on how easily people can begin interacting with chatbots as though they were human, raising new questions about trust, relationships, and technology. Dr Ami Bhatt part TWO You will learn about: • How bias in healthcare data can affect artificial intelligence • Why diverse clinical research matters for medical AI • How AI may help reduce healthcare disparities • How remote monitoring and wearables may expand access to care • How AI may support community health workers and medical triage • Why representation in clinical trials matters for future AI systems • Ethical concerns surrounding AI-generated health information • How advertising may influence patients using AI for medical questions • AI, GLP-1 medications, eating disorders, and health messaging • Why health literacy and digital literacy are increasingly important • What it takes to implement AI across large healthcare systems • Why earlier diagnosis is not always automatically better • How AI-generated information may contribute to health anxiety • Why responsible AI requires governance, infrastructure, and guardrails • How prevention, wellness, and lifestyle remain central to healthcare Timestamps 00:00 Welcome back and introduction to Part 2 01:00 AI, health equity, and healthcare disparities 02:00 Remote monitoring and wearable technology 03:00 AI, community health workers, and improving access to care 05:00 Representation and diversity in clinical research 07:00 Using AI to improve clinical trial diversity 09:00 The biggest ethical concerns surrounding healthcare AI 10:00 AI-generated medical information and advertising 11:00 When chatbots begin to feel human 12:00 GLP-1 medications, eating disorders, and AI health information 13:00 Why we need better health and digital literacy 15:00 What it takes to implement AI across healthcare systems 16:00 AI for diagnosis, screening, and early detection 17:00 Can AI identify disease too early? 18:00 AI, health anxiety, and patient choice 20:00 Prevention, wellness, and lifestyle medicine 22:00 What responsible AI governance looks like 23:00 Building infrastructure and guardrails for healthcare AI 24:00 AI, telemedicine, community care, and personalized monitoring 25:00 Closing thoughts Key Topics Covered Artificial intelligence in healthcare AI bias in healthcare Health equity Healthcare disparities Medical AI Digital health Health literacy Digital literacy Healthcare innovation AI implementation Preventive healthcare Human-centered healthcare CONNECT WITH DR. Can We Trust AI in Medicine? What’s Real, What’s Hype, and What Comes Next

Send us Fan Mail  Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming part of healthcare, but understanding where it is genuinely useful and where its limitations remain is increasingly important for both patients and clinicians. In Part 1 of the ANEW Insight Podcast, Dr. Supatra Tovar speaks with Dr. Ami Bhatt, cardiologist, digital health strategist, Chief Innovation Officer at the American College of Cardiology, and Chair of the FDA Digital Health Advisory Committee. Dr. Bhatt works at the intersection of medicine, artificial intelligence, digital health, remote monitoring, and human-centered healthcare. The conversation begins with where AI is already being used successfully in healthcare, including administrative systems, medical documentation, and tools that may help clinicians navigate increasingly large amounts of medical information. Dr. Bhatt explains how AI-assisted documentation may allow physicians to spend less time focused on a computer screen and more time engaging directly with patients. Dr. Tovar and Dr. Bhatt then explore the question of accuracy and trust in medical AI. They discuss the difference between general artificial intelligence tools and healthcare-specific systems, why individual patients often require context and nuance that technology may not fully capture, and why clinical judgment remains essential when interpreting AI-generated information. The conversation also examines what trustworthy AI in healthcare really means. Dr. Bhatt discusses issues such as privacy, cybersecurity, HIPAA, transparency, data quality, and the responsibility of clinicians and healthcare systems to critically evaluate AI tools before relying on them in patient care. Dr. Bhatt also shares her perspective on how medical education is adapting to artificial intelligence. Rather than simply discouraging students and clinicians from using AI, she discusses the importance of learning how to evaluate these tools, recognize where they may be useful, identify where they may fail, and become thoughtful, AI-enabled healthcare professionals. The discussion then turns to the rapidly growing use of AI by patients seeking health information. Dr. Bhatt shares a personal experience using large language models while waiting for medical care and explains why AI-generated health information can sometimes create unnecessary fear when it is interpreted without the context and judgment of a healthcare professional. Finally, Dr. Bhatt discusses some of the most promising applications of AI in cardiology, including cardiac imaging, identifying potentially higher-risk cardiovascular findings, prioritizing urgent test results, improving triage, and supporting healthcare teams. She also explains why she does not believe AI will replace radiologists or physicians, but may significantly change how clinicians work and communicate. You will learn about: • Where AI is already being used in healthcare • How AI may improve physician-patient communication • Why clinical judgment remains important when using AI • The difference between general AI and healthcare-specific AI tools • What trustworthy AI may require in medicine • How privacy, HIPAA, and cybersecurity relate to medical AI • How medical education may change because of AI • The risks of relying on AI-generated medical information without clinical context • How AI may support cardiology and cardiac imaging • How AI may help prioritize urgent medical findings • Why AI may change physician workflows without replacing clinicians • Why human judgment and communication remain central to healthcare Timestamps 00:00 Welcome and introduction to Dr. Ami Bhatt 02:00 Where AI is already improving healthcare 03:00 How AI may improve the doctor-patient interaction 05:00 Using AI to navigate complex medical information 06:00 How accurate is AI-generated medical information? 08:00 How medical education is adapting to AI 10:00 What makes AI trustworthy in healthcare? 12:00 Privacy, HIPAA, and AI health data 14:00 Using AI for personal medical questions 16:00 AI, mental health, and the limits of automated support 18:00 When AI-supported health coaching may be useful 19:00 The future of AI in cardiology 20:00 AI and cardiovascular risk prediction 21:00 Using AI to prioritize urgent imaging 23:00 AI, triage, and team-based care 24:00 Will AI replace radiologists? 25:00 Closing thoughts and Part 2 preview Key Topics Covered Artificial intelligence in healthcare AI in medicine Digital health Trustworthy AI Medical AI Clinical decision-making AI and doctors Cardiac imaging Cardiovascular risk Remote monitoring Healthcare innovation Physician workflows Human-centered healthcare Future of medicine CONNECT WITH DR. When Migraine Treatment Isn’t Working: Looking Beyond the Usual Answers

Send us Fan Mail Persistent headaches and migraines can be exhausting, especially when someone feels as though they have already tried everything. For some people, understanding chronic headache pain may require looking at more than symptoms alone and considering factors such as neck function, the nervous system, previous injuries, sleep, movement, stress, mindset, and overall health. In Part 2 of the ANEW Insight Podcast, Dr. Supatra Tovar continues her conversation with Dr. Jonathan Taves, a Mayo Clinic-trained Doctor of Physical Therapy, headache specialist, and founder of Novera: Headache Center. Dr. Taves works with people experiencing chronic and complex headache disorders, including migraines, persistent daily headaches, occipital neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, and post-traumatic headaches. The conversation begins with what Dr. Taves commonly sees in patients who have struggled with headaches for years and what may distinguish people who experience meaningful improvement. He discusses the importance of consistency, resilience, and willingness to stay engaged in the treatment process, while also explaining that different headache patterns may require very different approaches. Dr. Tovar and Dr. Taves then explore the relationship between chronic pain, mindset, and the autonomic nervous system. They discuss how persistent pain can contribute to a cycle of stress and heightened nervous-system activation, as well as approaches such as breathing exercises, biofeedback, relaxation, mindfulness, and other strategies that may help support nervous-system regulation. The conversation also provides an accessible explanation of occipital neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, and post-traumatic headaches. Dr. Taves describes how nerve-related pain may feel different from other headache patterns and explains how previous injuries such as car accidents, falls, skiing injuries, or whiplash may affect neck function and potentially contribute to headache symptoms later. Dr. Taves and Dr. Tovar then discuss approaches beyond medication, including movement, exercise, stretching, sleep hygiene, nutrition, stress reduction, breathing, and overall health. Dr. Taves also explains when medication may still be useful and why it may be most helpful when used as one tool within a broader approach to understanding and managing headache symptoms. Finally, they discuss patient advocacy and multidisciplinary care, including the importance of working with healthcare providers who continue asking why symptoms are occurring and who are willing to consider multiple possible contributors when headaches persist. You will learn about: • Why some chronic headaches may be more difficult to treat  • How persistent daily headaches can differ from other migraine patterns  • How stress, mindset, and the nervous system may influence chronic pain  • How breathing and nervous-system regulation may support pain management  • What occipital neuralgia and trigeminal neuralgia are  • How previous injuries may contribute to post-traumatic headaches  • What non-medication approaches may support headache care  • When migraine medication may still play a useful role  • Why individualized and multidisciplinary treatment can matter  • How to better advocate for yourself when headaches remain unresolved Timestamps 00:00 Welcome back and introduction to Part 2  01:00 What Dr. Taves sees in patients who improve  03:00 Migraine patterns vs. persistent daily headaches  05:00 Mindset, stress, and chronic pain  07:00 The autonomic nervous system and fight-or-flight  08:00 Breathing exercises and nervous-system regulation  09:00 Light sensitivity and calming the nervous system  10:00 Biofeedback, mindfulness, and chronic pain  12:00 Understanding occipital and trigeminal neuralgia  15:00 Post-traumatic headaches and previous injuries  17:00 Alternatives to medication for headaches  19:00 Movement, stretching, sleep, and lifestyle  21:00 When migraine medication may be helpful  23:00 Medication as one tool in headache treatment  24:00 How to advocate for yourself as a patient  26:00 The importance of multidisciplinary headache care  27:00 How to connect with Dr. Jonathan Taves Key Topics Covered Chronic headaches  Migraine  Persistent daily headaches  Occipital neuralgia  Trigeminal neuralgia  Post-traumatic headaches  Chronic pain  Nervous system regulation  Stress and headaches  Mindset and chronic pain  Breathing exercises  Biofeedback  Sleep and headaches  Movement and exercise  Nutrition and headache health  Migraine medication  Patient advocacy  Multidisciplinary care  Physical therapy CONNECT WITH DR. Could Your Headache Be Neck Pain? Understanding the Hidden Connection

Send us Fan Mail Persistent headaches and migraines can be frustrating, especially when medications, imaging, and repeated medical evaluations have not provided clear answers. Headache disorders are complex, and understanding them may involve looking beyond the location of the pain to consider factors such as the neck, jaw, previous injuries, sleep, stress, and overall health. In Part 1 of the ANEW Insight Podcast, Dr. Supatra Tovar speaks with Dr. Jonathan Taves, a Mayo Clinic-trained Doctor of Physical Therapy, headache specialist, and founder of Novera: Headache Center. Dr. Taves specializes in chronic and complex headache disorders, including migraines, cervicogenic headaches, occipital neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, and post-traumatic headaches. The conversation begins with why chronic headaches can be so difficult to understand and why some people continue experiencing symptoms even when imaging appears normal or medications have not provided sufficient relief. Dr. Taves explains how pain can sometimes be referred from the neck into the head and discusses why identifying possible contributors to headache pain may require looking beyond symptoms alone. Dr. Tovar and Dr. Taves also explore the anatomy of the upper neck and how the cervical spine, occipital nerves, and trigeminal nerves may interact in the experience of head and facial pain. Dr. Taves describes why mobility in the upper neck can make this area particularly important to evaluate in some people with persistent headaches. The conversation then moves into Dr. Taves’ three-part approach to evaluating chronic headaches: identifying possible sources of pain, considering developmental or structural factors that may contribute to symptoms, and looking at overall health factors such as sleep, stress, nutrition, hormones, and general health. He emphasizes that every person is different and that multiple factors may contribute to an individual’s headache experience. Finally, Dr. Tovar and Dr. Taves discuss the differences between migraine, tension headache, and cervicogenic headache, why headache classifications can sometimes be confusing, and how hormonal fluctuations may influence a person’s threshold for developing headache symptoms.
