    Episode 36 – Donta Santistevan // Illustrator. Designer. "The homie Donta has fulfilled the dream. He grew up in California, obsessed over the worlds of skateboarding and art, eventually went to art school, and after years of hard work has found himself at the intersection of art and skate heaven, working as an in-house Illustrator and Designer for The Mag aka The Bible aka Thrasher Magazine. He’s got styles for miles, talent for days, and a warm and friendly heart to boot. Donta’s illustrations are sick as f**k, full of color, and the dude is just such a nice guy. Needless to say, I’m a fan. In this episode of BEDROOM™, Donta shares a pivotal moment in his creative life, how he found himself in a bit of a rut in his late 20s, spending his time working at a cafe and freelancing on the side. After some self-reflection, he decided he wanted to shoot his shot and follow his dreams to make it in the world of skateboarding and get some official board graphics made. After all, you miss all the shots you don’t take, and my G was shooting full-court shots - eventually, he started making them! He tells the story of how he landed his first board graphic series for Ed Templeton’s iconic company: Toy Machine. From there, he talks about making board graphics for enjoi, Chico Brenes’ Central, and the Crail Camp’s own, Chocolate Skateboards. Donta then shares how he got the job at Thrasher and what it is he actually does over there. He’s picked up the metaphorical-baton from the old school 60s psychedelic masters like Rick Griffin and Stanley Mouse and brought it into the present, blending that lineage with his own unmistakable flavor. It’s no secret, that my dude Fez is in high demand for his incredible creations, all hand illustrated on paper like the good old days. Fez has made posters for legendary bands like Eagles, Beach Fossils, Hot Tuna, Kurt Vile, Ty Segall, Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr., Goose, Cat Power, and Dead & Company, and so many more. I’m genuinely stoked to share this conversation with one of my favorite poster artists. Fez Moreno - put some respect on his name, G! In this episode of BEDROOM™, Fez talks about his past life in Austin, Texas and how he eventually landed in San Francisco. He shares stories about creating liquid light shows for concerts and, of course, making concert posters, which is the definitive heartbeat of this episode.     Episode 34 – Krusty Wheatfield // Cartoonist. Artist. “Alright, first things first, let’s get it on record: I’m a fan of Krusty. Their art style is so raw and whimsical - there’s a whirlwind of relatability and humanity all within their little old line. Usually, their work is either absolutely full of color, where it just sort of explodes off the page, or it’s often just a single color, like black on white paper, and each approach has this entrancing aspect to it. It’s like yin-yang, I’m into both approaches and they each feed off of each other, creating the artist balance that is the work of Krusty Wheatfield. My guess for why I love their work so much is their subject matter. Krusty has this singular perspective and magical ability where they transform the small, usually unappreciated moments in our daily lives - the tiny, beautiful details - and they turn the spotlight on them. Their work gives me hope and honestly it rewards and reminds me with of an appreciation for life, the human experience, and how these little moments in our lives are actually the big moments.  In this episode of BEDROOM™, Krusty and I talk about digital vs. analog drawing, how Krusty got into making comics, and the moral dilemmas of the modern artist when they get commissioned to work for corporations they may not believe in. We get into their schooling at UC Berkeley and the importance of finding community, self-publishing, making zines and comics, and entering the DIY world of the Bay Area underground scene. We talk about how absolutely fun the act of drawing is and how we just wish more people would practice it because of how fulfilling it is. Krusty then shares their experience teaching kids art and comics at The International School of San Francisco, as well as the long-term collaboration they’ve had with San Francisco’s very own punk godfather, V. Vale - writer and publisher of RE/Search Publications - which is possibly the only surviving ’70s punk publisher. We talk about Vale and Krusty’s joint residency in 2025 at Headlands Center for the Arts in Marin, and we also get the scoop on their recently published comic anthology, Search For Weird, which was released in France.     Episode 33 – LaTajh Simmons-Weaver // Film Director & Writer “Sometimes I get suggestions for who should come on the BEDROOM™ Podcast, and LaTajh was someone multiple film homies kept requesting. We started following each other on the gram, and at one point I slid through with my classic inquiry. LaTajh was down, and I didn’t know what to expect, though their Instagram bio says “better offline, promise.” Well, the promise was delivered. LaTajh has such a warm presence, and I felt super comfortable around them. The first thing they said to me as they walked up my studio steps was “do you do hugs?” (I definitely do), and from there it was just a highly enjoyable time sharing this space, this episode, this conversation together. I’m a fan of their films, and I can’t wait to see their next move. I also love that they shouted out Monta Ellis - real ones know. There’s no doubt in my mind that LaTajh and their films will stun the world, so it was an honor to spend time with them in my studio and talk shop. LaTajh is rad and I think y’all will dig this joynt. In this episode of BEDROOM™, LaTajh and I talk about memes, Q&A’s at film events, their upbringing in Oakland, and the moment their uncle gifted them a camera and they fell in love with it. We reminisce about school critiques and how negative comments, even when justified, can fuel the fire to go harder in the creative paint. LaTajh shares the moment they were named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film and what comes with that accolade. We also talk about how they’re an SF Film Resident and how they won the Rainin Grant, the largest granting body for independent narrative feature films in the US. From there we dive into LaTajh’s short films and the themes they consistently explore: the rapid changes that come with gentrification, the question of what “home” really means, and the lingering curiosity of how Oakland might have evolved without displacement. What could Oakland have become? LaTajh then speaks on their current feature film project, No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds: A Queer Inclusive Memoir, which takes on the topic of the Oakland queer scene and how its radical politics can sometimes feed into cancel culture. We shift into a conversation about Companion, their short film that serves as an ode to the unspoken romance between cats and their humans, and we segue into what short films can do for a filmmaker’s career and how they can serve as stepping stones. From Companion, we move to Hold Me Close, a short film LaTajh co-directed with Aurora Brachman. The film premiered at Sundance and chronicles the power and complexity of the relationship between two queer Black womxn who experience the cycles of life’s joys and pains together in the home they share. Creative Director. “A few months back, I was partaking in the classic, all-too-human ritual of doomscrolling when I stumbled upon a gem in the rough - a stylish, articulate, left-of-center online “it” girl talking about KidPix, the history of the Muni logo, retrofuturism, and gothic design. Her name was Madeleine. She was a creator and she lived in my phone. I liked her videos and kept scrolling. We’ve all been there - delighted by that one creator who actually makes doomscrolling feel worth it. Her videos had merit, a unique perspective, and they felt human - I learned something. It was pure - and it all existed between memes, brain rot, and the rest of the dumb noise on the modern day internet. Fast-forward a few days later, I’m minding my own business at a Music Poster Art Show I was part of, hosted by The Fillmore, and in walks Madeleine - straight out of my freaking phone and into real life. We hit it off immediately. I told her I loved her videos, she was down to come on the podcast, and here we are: our first big conversation. My takeaway?     Episode 31 – Emilio Villalba // Painter. Professor. “You know when you meet someone new and you just sorta hit it off and that person becomes your new favorite homie? Well that’s exactly how I felt after spending the afternoon talking to Emilio in my art studio. The dude is an absolute sweetheart of a human. He’s kind, eloquent, well spoken, stylish to boot, and his perspective on painting is layered, honest, and coated in authenticity. Emilio is a phenomenal painter. He’s currently represented by Dolby Chadwick Gallery here in San Francisco. But accolades and talent aside, what impresses me most about Emilio is his genuine warmth. I literally met dude for the first time and by the end of our recording it was like we’ve known each other for years. That’s what fascinates me podcasting and the art of conversation: sometimes it can feel like a game of tug-o-war and sometimes it feels like you’re floating freely down a river.     Episode 30 – James Wavey // Musician “His government name is Michael Bridgmon, but to all of us in the Bay Area music scene, we know him as the one and only James Wavey – and what a fitting name for dude. He’s about as fly as they come, and Wavey is only the tip of the descriptive iceberg that defines the aura he exudes. James is calm, cool, and collected, with a grounding presence. His musical career has organically grown and blossomed in the Bay, and each branch of his sound has its own unique appeal – I think that’s what I appreciate about his art. He’s down to experiment as an artist, shift up his sound, and stay self-aware of his range, which makes his genre-blending approach to music feel seamless, confident, and full of authorship. All in all, he’s a new homie to me, but nowhere near new to some of y’all, as he’s planted his sounds into the Bay’s musical community, and we’re proud to call him a local.     Episode 29 – Harry Nordlinger // Cartoonist. “One of the unexpected side effects of creating the BEDROOM™ Podcast is that I feel more tuned in than ever to the creative talent pool of the Bay Area - and it’s thriving. Sure, it may be more expensive than ever to live here (a topic for another day), but that very pressure of surviving and thriving as an artist creates star-studded, diamond-like talent. And trust me, we’ve got some seriously bright artists in the 7x7 and beyond. One of these creative killers is my new friend - and now my personal favorite comic artist in San Francisco - Harry Nordlinger. For a couple of years, I’ve been admiring the hand-drawn and painted movie flyers for the Balboa Theater and 4 Star Theater. It turns out the flyers I’ve been so captivated by were mostly created by two artists: one named Trey Flanigan (who I definitely need to get on the pod), and today’s guest in the BEDROOM™ for episode #29 - the coolest cat in the Outer Avenues of the Richmond District - Harry Nordlinger. Harry is a cartoonist and puts out a horror comic called Vacuum Decay, and I swear, it’s one of my new favorite things. I’ve never really thought of myself as a “comic person,” but this one has me reconsidering. I picked up some issues at Mission: Comics & Art, and I’m infatuated. Harry’s work is dark - both in theme and tone - high-contrast in its inking, raw, original, and filled with influences from filmmaking and fringe culture. In this episode of BEDROOM™, Harry shares how he first got into making comics and the backstory of how his critically acclaimed horror anthology Vacuum Decay came to life. He gives insight into his working process, and we even get into a friendly debate about digital vs. analog art, comics, and inking. We talk shop about his tools of the trade, painting covers with gouache, and punk rock art icon Raymond Pettibon. Harry also drops some exclusive news about what to expect in Vacuum Decay Issue #8, as well as details on his current project, a comic called Lazer Quest. We touch on how many indie comic artists juggle day jobs to fund their work, and the challenges of balancing art-making with making rent.
