Tracking Wisdom Episode 48 The Heart–Brain Connection: Exploring Rollin McCraty and HeartMath Recorded - 09/28/26 DESCRIPTION What can the rhythm of your heartbeat tell us about stress, emotional balance, and our ability to regulate ourselves? And can learning to influence that rhythm help us cultivate greater resilience and well-being? In this episode of Tracking Wisdom, Ryan and Peter explore the work of Dr. Rollin McCraty, director of research at the HeartMath Institute, and his research into heart rate variability (HRV), heart–brain communication, and physiological coherence. We begin with the science of heart rate variability—the subtle changes in timing between heartbeats—and its relationship to the autonomic nervous system. From there, we examine HeartMath's concept of coherence, a more organized pattern of heart rhythm associated with emotional regulation and physiological balance. Along the way, we challenge some familiar assumptions about stress and relaxation. Is the goal simply to reduce stress, or to develop a healthier balance between activation and recovery? How do emotions influence our physiology, and can changes in our physiological state influence how we experience emotions? The conversation also explores HeartMath's use of biofeedback technology to make physiological patterns visible during self-regulation exercises. We consider how this differs from traditional meditation, the value of feedback from teachers and communities, and whether technology can help people develop more consistent practices. In this episode, we explore: What heart rate variability measures and why it mattersThe relationship between the heart, brain, and autonomic nervous systemSympathetic and parasympathetic activity, stress, and recoveryWhat HeartMath means by physiological coherenceThe connections between emotions, heart rhythms, and self-regulationBreathing techniques, HRV biofeedback, and the value of measurable feedbackTechnology-assisted training versus traditional contemplative practicesWhy consistency and small, sustainable steps matterWhere HeartMath's research moves toward more speculative claims about interpersonal and global coherence We close by considering the practical value of cultivating emotional balance, even while leaving room to question the broader interpretations of the research. In a forthcoming companion episode, we'll turn a more critical eye toward some of HeartMath's far-reaching claims and the evidence supporting them.
