The Boy from Manacor | Rafael Nadal’s Path to Greatness, Chapter 1

How much of who you are was shaped before you were old enough to choose? Paris, June 3, 2005. A Spaniard who turned nineteen that morning beat world number one Roger Federer in the French Open semifinal. At the net, he leaned in and said, “I’m sorry, Roger.” Two days later, he won Roland Garros at his first attempt. He arrived ranked fifth in the world, and The Guardian had already called him the favorite. The story of what produced him starts nineteen years earlier, about a thousand kilometers south. This first chapter of Rafael Nadal’s Path to Greatness goes back to Manacor, a working town on Mallorca. His family there kept the people they loved within walking distance. Two uncles shaped him. One played football for Barcelona and Spain, which made elite sport ordinary at the family table. The other, Toni, put a racket in his hand at around three, and asked a great deal of him. The choice between football and tennis came down to homework. When the Spanish federation offered him a place in Barcelona, the family kept him home. Within days of lifting the trophy in Paris, the sport had decided what kind of player he was. 💡 Pause and reflect: What have you assumed you needed to leave in order to grow? Was It a Bad Decision, or a Bad Outcome? | Hindsight Bias and the Stories We Tell

Why does the right answer always seem obvious once someone reveals it? Before the reveal in a good mystery, the clues feel scattered. Then Sherlock Holmes names the answer, and suddenly every detail looks like it was always pointing the same way. The clues have not changed. Only your knowledge of the ending has. We do something similar to ourselves. This episode is about hindsight bias, and the difference between a bad decision and a bad outcome. Because those are not the same thing, and treating them as one is how people end up punishing themselves for choices that were reasonable when they made them. We return to Moneyball with a different question than we asked in Episode 8. Did Oakland's playoff defeat prove the strategy was wrong? And there is a more personal story. A school basketball team, a jersey number I chose, and being cut one week before the tournament. I spent years wondering whether I had made the wrong decision. Looking back, I am no longer sure the decision was the problem. 💡 Pause and reflect: What past decision are you judging with knowledge, maturity, or perspective you did not have at the time?
