Why You Don't Push Back When Your Partner Criticizes You (And Where It Leads)

If your partner keeps criticizing you, everyone will tell you to set better boundaries. In this episode, Katarina Polonska explains why that advice almost never works, and names the pattern nobody talks about: chronic, subtle criticism at home is one of the most common on-ramps to an affair she sees in her work with founders and executives. She starts with the scene: you close a deal that took eighteen months, walk through your own front door four minutes later, and get met with a lecture about the dishwasher. You want to say something. You don't. You listen, you agree, you let it go, and you tell yourself you're picking your battles. Katarina shows how that choice, repeated for years, teaches your partner that criticism works and teaches you that you don't get to have needs. The needs don't go away. You just stop expecting them to be met at home, and the first person who meets them somewhere else becomes a magnet. Then the real culprit, which isn't the criticism at all. It's the belief underneath: that pushing back will cost more than staying quiet, that saying something makes you the bad guy, too much, or alone. She explains why "just set a boundary" fails while that belief is still running, the difference between a complaint and a criticism, and two composite stories from opposite sides of the breadwinner dynamic where finding and shifting that belief changed everything. The episode closes with a practice to find your own belief: what you're afraid to say, what you're afraid would happen, and what you believe that makes you so afraid. Write it down. That's where the work begins. 5 Hard Truths About Marriage Nobody Tells High Achievers (And Why Affairs Start at Work)

You know how to build a company. Most high achievers have no idea how to build a marriage, and success doesn't prepare you for the parts that matter most. In this episode, Katarina Polonska shares five realities she sees again and again with founders and executives. First: performing is part of the job, but when you perform all day for years, the work version of you starts to feel like the real one. The person who sees that version every day is the person you end up feeling understood by, which is why so many affairs begin at the office. Second: at your level, the hardest skill isn't performing. It's putting the performance down at home, bringing your needs and your vulnerability to the one person who's supposed to know you. From there she covers the investment a marriage takes, in time, attention, and learning, the way you once invested in your career. She explains why generosity (including a clearly stated boundary) keeps a relationship healthy while withholding keeps it stuck, and why your marriage deserves the same deliberate priority you give your business. Along the way she tells her own story: the counselor who told her she was "always so put together" even as she cried in his office, what that revealed, and how she and her husband protect their marriage today. None of these are traits you either have or don't. They're skills, and they can be learned. Why Resentment Ends Marriages (And Why It Usually Ends With an Affair)

If you're resentful of your partner right now, Katarina Polonska wants to tell you something most people won't: it makes complete sense. And that's exactly why it's dangerous. In this episode, she explains why resentment rarely ends a marriage directly. It ends it by quietly making you available to someone else, before you've consciously decided to do anything at all. She's watched this exact pattern end marriages, and she's watched it get caught early enough to change course. The difference is always timing. She starts with validation, because it's earned: if you're the breadwinner, the provider, the one who carries everything and thinks of everything, resentment isn't a flaw, it's a consequence. Then she shows how it's already surfacing in ways you may not have named: the sharp comment, the withheld affection, the sigh, the extra hour at the office. She walks through what it costs when it compounds, all the way to the Gottman Institute's negative sentiment override and the real price of a divorce at your level, financially, emotionally, and reputationally. Then the trap nobody sees coming: resentment doesn't drive you to fix things. It drives you to do less. You go quiet, you pick your battles, you call it maturity, and the silence is where it ferments until caring turns into apathy. And once you've stopped caring, there's nothing left to work with. The episode closes with the alternative, a version of you who notices resentment early, treats it as information, and brings your needs to your partner in a way they can actually hear, and the three-step practice Katarina gives her clients to start clearing it this week. It's never too late, within reason. But it has to be caught before it's carrying you somewhere you didn't choose Watch this free video to learn more: https://www.successfullyinlove.com/ Book a free strategy call with Katarina: https://calendly.com/katarinapolonska/20minconsult About the Host Katarina Polonska is a Strategic Relationship Advisor and a Gender Dynamic Social Scientist from the University of Oxford. Before You Call It Quits: 5 Things to Do Before Ending Your Marriage

You can make a $50 million decision in an afternoon. But put the same person in front of their own marriage, sometimes even mid-affair, and they'll stay stuck on one question for years: do I stay or do I go? Katarina Polonska has walked hundreds of founders and executives through this exact cycle, and in this episode she shares the five things almost every one of them was missing, the five things to do before you end your marriage, so that whatever you decide, you never look back with regret. She starts where nobody wants to start: 100% responsibility. You are co-creating the dynamic you're living in, and until you've owned your side of the street, the withdrawal when your partner pursues, the people-pleasing that quietly builds into resentment, the defensiveness that keeps the same fight on repeat, you have no evidence of what this relationship could be when you show up differently. Ending it before that isn't clarity. It's how people wake up ten years later regretting their divorce. From there she walks through getting brutally honest about what's actually happening, getting clear on what you genuinely need rather than what feels good right now, and the step that dissolves the 2am loop: leaving no stone unturned. Because the real fear is rarely life after the decision. It's the guilt of wondering whether you gave it a fair chance. Build the map, run it fully, and one of two things happens: the relationship transforms, because a different you produces a different dynamic, or you leave calmly, seeing clearly for the first time, with zero limbo. And finally, the piece that changes everything downstream: relationship skills. Repair, conflict, desire, needs, boundaries. Nobody is born fluent in these. They're trained, the same deliberate way you trained for the boardroom. Learn them, and the impossible question stops being impossible. The real question was never stay or go. It's whether you can see the relationship clearly enough to know for sure Watch this free video to learn more: https://www.successfullyinlove.com/ Book a free strategy call with Katarina: https://calendly.com/katarinapolonska/20minconsult About the Host Katarina Polonska is a Strategic Relationship Advisor and a Gender Dynamic Social Scientist from the University of Oxford. Why Smart CEOs Blow Up Their Lives Over an Affair

Smart, careful, calculated CEOs, the same people who can model a nine-figure acquisition in an afternoon, keep blowing up everything they've spent twenty years building over an affair. You'd think they would see it coming a mile away. They almost never do. In this episode, Katarina Polonska explains why. Not as a moral lecture, she's not interested in moralizing, but as a clear-eyed look at the state a person is actually in when this begins: hormonal, intoxicated, feeling genuinely wanted for the first time in years, and convinced, from inside that haze, that they can see clearly. Cloud nine is a terrible place to run a risk assessment from, and nobody plans to blow up their life. She walks through everything that state makes invisible. The reputation built over decades that has no insurance policy. The financial restructuring of an entire life that a marital breakdown triggers, assets, equity, spousal support, control. The structural end of a partnership with the one person who knew you before the success. And the strange, specific loneliness of the person who can't tell the board, can't tell friends, and has nowhere to take the one question consuming them. Then the way through: the three steps Katarina walks clients through in exactly this position. Saying what's really happening out loud, unedited. Getting underneath the affair to what it's actually solving for, and what you genuinely need long term. And building the sober strategy, real numbers included, so the decision you eventually make is one you can stand behind with integrity, whatever it turns out to be. Handled from the haze, this is a midlife crisis. Handled clearly, it can become a midlife awakening. The difference is the work in between. 5 Signs Your Marriage Is Quietly Drifting (And the Small Move That Reverses Each One)

Most marriages don't end with a big dramatic event. They end slowly, over years, through a handful of patterns that feel completely normal while you're living inside them. No fights, no crisis, nothing anyone outside would notice. Just two people drifting into parallel lives under the same roof. In this episode, Katarina Polonska walks through the five signs of that quiet drift. The low-conflict marriage you might even be proud of, where the peace is really an unspoken agreement to keep everything shallow enough that there's nothing left to fight about. The conversations that have narrowed to pure logistics. The lopsided emotional load, and the low hum of resentment that builds where the asking stopped. The affection that faded through nothing more dramatic than years of tired evenings. And the moment both of you stopped asking real questions, settling instead for a picture of each other that's years out of date. Every sign comes with a move: something small, concrete, and entirely within your control to try this week, without waiting for your partner to go first. Because every one of these patterns is co-created, which is exactly why one person starting is enough to shift it. Katarina closes with an honest way to read your own result: when a sign or two is just a season under load, when three or more compounding over a year means it's time to act and where to start, and what it means if none of them apply, in which case, take the win. None of these signs mean your marriage is broken or that you chose the wrong person. They mean very human patterns have been running without much awareness. And patterns built without awareness can be rebuilt, faster than most people expect. Should I Stay or Should I Go? The 3 Things to Do Before You Decide

It's 2am and you're replaying the fight from three weeks ago. You've run the pros and cons list a thousand times. You've asked yourself "should I leave my partner?" more times this year than you'd admit out loud. And you already know that asking again isn't going to change anything. In this episode, Katarina Polonska explains why that question keeps looping: it's being asked before the three inputs that would let you actually answer it exist. She walks through building all three, in the order that matters. First, your own patterns. What you do when things get tense, how a strategy that once protected you now runs on autopilot inside your marriage, and the uncomfortable ownership question that surfaces blind spots fast. Second, your actual needs, not your wants: the granular, concrete picture of what a nourishing life looks like for you, which most people running the stay-or-go loop have never once defined. And third, the strategy: turning each need into a specific ask, building the counter-move for each of your own patterns, and running it for a defined 90-day stretch that produces real data instead of a vague feeling. At the end of that runway, one of two things happens. Either your partner responds to clear asks and the day-to-day experience of the marriage genuinely shifts, or they don't, and that tells you something more useful than another sleepless night ever could. If you stay, you stay with evidence instead of exhaustion. If you go, you go with the inner peace of knowing you left no stone unturned. Katarina also covers where therapy fits alongside this work, and why the looping question was never proof that something is wrong with you. It's a sign the inputs haven't been built yet. Certainty is available, and it comes faster than most people expect once the real work starts. The Fear of Intimacy: Why You Can Be Present for Everything and Known by No One

You can be married for fifteen years, genuinely like your spouse, show up for every school play and every anniversary, and still feel like nobody has actually known the real you in a long time. Most people in that position quietly conclude the marriage is the problem. In this episode, Katarina Polonska offers a different explanation: somewhere along the way, you built a real skill at being close to someone while keeping the honest truth of who you are out of reach. She defines the fear of intimacy precisely, as the gap between being present and being known, and walks through the small, reasonable-sounding habits it hides inside: the automatic "I'm fine, just tired," the joke that deflects the vulnerable moment, the peace that's really shallowness, the overfunctioning that keeps every conversation at the level of logistics. She explains where the strategy comes from without sending you digging through your past, why the same pattern that built your success is now running in the wrong room, and the compounding cost of ten thousand small moments where the polished answer replaced the real one. Then the practical turn: why the fix is not one dramatic tell-them-everything conversation, but one honest sentence swapped in for the automatic one, and what a completely ordinary Tuesday night looks like six months into that practice, when your partner asks the same question they've asked a thousand times and, for the first time in years, gets you. The episode includes a simple test to know whether this pattern is running in your relationship, and an honest answer for the listener who runs the test and realizes it isn't: protect what you have. You haven't failed at intimacy. You succeeded at a different skill. And a strategy built on purpose can be updated on purpose.
