60: Back to School With Teens: Connection, Confidence, & Motivation Starts Here

Back-to-School Stress With Teens: What to Focus on Instead of Grades Back-to-school season has a way of bringing everything to the surface. The schedules. The lunches. The homework. The missing assignments. The conversations about motivation. And underneath all of that, the quiet questions so many parents are carrying: Will this year be different? How do I help without constantly nagging? Why does it feel like I’m losing influence with my teen? And what am I actually supposed to focus on? In this episode of The Teenage Guide, I’m helping you cut through some of that noise. Because when your teenager is struggling with school, motivation, procrastination, perfectionism, organization, or communication, it’s easy to put all of your energy into the thing you can see—the grades, the behavior, the schedule, or the consequence. But those aren't always the best place to begin. There are two things I want you to focus on this school year: relationships and skills—in that order. In this episode, we talk about: Why waiting until life “slows down” rarely creates the change we’re hoping for How busyness can quietly pull our attention away from what matters most Why grades and consequences shouldn't always be the first focus when your teen is struggling How your relationship with yourself affects the relationship you build with your teenager Why connection gives you more influence than control How to recognize a challenging behavior as a potential skill gap instead of a character flaw What yelling, procrastination, perfectionism, losing things, school struggles, and communication challenges may actually be telling you How to support your teen while still allowing them to develop confidence and capability The RELATE Method I also walk you through my RELATE Method; my proven framework that's helped hundreds of parents and teens build strong, more connected relationships.   R — Reveal the real youAuthenticity and appropriate vulnerability create connection. E — Engage with high-quality presencePractice understanding your teenager's world through their eyes before judging, correcting, or fixing. L — Listen actively without an agendaSometimes our teens need us to listen more than they need us to have the answer. A — AttuneNotice your teen's emotional state without absorbing it or becoming dysregulated alongside them. T — TrustThink of trust like a bank account. It's built through small deposits, in small moments, over time. E — ElevateHold a bigger vision for your teenager—even during the moments when they can't see it for themselves. Your teen's challenges aren't proof that something has gone wrong. And your struggle to know how to respond isn't proof that you're failing. Instead of asking, “How do I make this behavior stop?” we can become curious: What is this showing me about the relationship or the skills that need support? That shift changes how we approach school, behavior, motivation—and our teenagers themselves. Mentioned in this episode:  Ready to feel more confident and connected this school year? Join me for my three-part miniseries, Confident & Connected: The Blueprint for Parents of Teens. We’ll focus on the relationship and skills that help you move through the teenage years with more confidence, connection, and clarity—without making your teen a problem that needs to be fixed. 59: Real Parents, Real Teens, & The Formula That Changes Everything

EP. 59: Real Parents, Real Teens, & The Formula That Changes Everything What actually changes when you stop trying to fix the behavior you can see…and start paying attention to what’s happening underneath it? In this episode, I’m taking you inside the experiences of two real families I’ve worked with—because sometimes the best way to understand this work is to see what it looks like in real life. One family came to me with a teenage daughter who was struggling deeply with friendship dynamics. She was overwhelmed, shutting down, and carrying so much internally that it was spilling out as attitude and tension at home. Another family was navigating a completely different challenge: a high school junior carrying enormous pressure, struggling with the routines and executive function skills he needed, while his relationship with his dad had become increasingly disconnected and conflict-heavy. Different teens. Different families. But underneath? A very similar pattern. Behavior is information, not the problem. What can look like laziness, attitude, moodiness, defiance, or a lack of motivation is often telling us something much deeper about a teen’s stress, identity, nervous system, relationships, or missing skills. And when we understand what’s actually driving the pattern, we can stop fighting the leaves and start strengthening the roots. In this episode, I’m sharing what we worked on with these families—from self-awareness and nervous system regulation to communication, executive function, identity, and rebuilding trust—and the shifts that happened as a result. Because the goal isn’t a teenager who never struggles or a family who never has conflict. It’s a family that knows how to move through those moments, repair when things go sideways, and come back together. I’m also breaking down Start Strong, my live 3-part back-to-school experience for parents of teens, and the exact order we’ll work through together: relationship first, then the skill gap, then the systems that help your family move forward. In this episode, you’ll hear: Why your teen’s behavior may be pointing to an invisible stressor or missing skill What changed for a teenage girl struggling with friendship dynamics and her sense of self Why building a teen’s identity and self-awareness can change far more than the immediate “problem” What happened when one family stopped treating conflict between a teen and his dad as just a communication issue Why executive function becomes much harder when a teen’s nervous system is under chronic stress The role parents play in creating the regulation and safety teens need to develop these skills Why a teen is more likely to listen when they first feel listened to How to recognize a skill gap instead of assuming laziness, entitlement, or a character flaw Why sustainable change happens in an order: relationship → awareness and skills → systems What we’re really building during adolescence—and why it reaches far beyond grades, college, and graduation Start Strong: A Back-to-School Blueprint for Families With Teens If school has become a sore subject There’s more conflict than connection at home You’re unsure how to support your teen socially Or, you simply know you don’t want to repeat last year’s patterns, Start Strong was created for you. You do not have to be in crisis to need support. Over three live 30-minute classes, we’ll look beneath the surface and build a foundation your family can actually use: Day 1: The Climb — RelationshipUnderstand the relationship dynamics running underneath the patterns at home and what needs to shift first. Day 2: The Peak — The Skill GapLearn how to identify the awareness or skill gaps hiding underneath frustrating behaviors so you know what you’re actually working with. Day 3: Your 30-Day Family PlanTurn what you’ve learned into a practical family system you can begin using right away. Start Strong begins Friday, August 14, with live classes August 14–16. Registration is $33 and includes access to the recordings. Join Start Strong:theteenageguide.com/strong Go Beyond the Surface Not sure what’s actually keeping your family stuck? 58: 5 Parenting Myths That Are Making Your Teen's Behavior Worse

5 Parenting Myths That Are Making Teen Behavior Worse (Without You Realizing It) What if the strategies you've been been told will fix your teen are actually keeping your family stuck? If it's late at night, sound off, and you're scrolling the internet looking for parenting answers because you're thinking... "I've tried everything." "Maybe I just need better consequences." "If they would just care more about school..." "This has gotta be a phase." "I can't believe I've worked so hard and this is how they treat me." ...you're not alone. In this episode of The Teenage Guide Podcast, Ashley Chandler unpacks five of the biggest parenting myths that quietly keep families stuck in cycles of conflict, frustration, and disconnection. These beliefs sound reasonable—even loving—but they often lead parents to focus on changing behavior instead of understanding what's driving it. Using her signature Teenage Tree Framework, Ashley explains why behaviors like poor grades, low motivation, disrespect, emotional distance, and constant conflict aren't the real problem—they're the leaves. When you learn to look beneath the surface, everything changes. This episode will help you stop chasing behavior and start strengthening the relationships that create lasting confidence, responsibility, resilience, and connection. In This Episode You'll Learn ✔ Why consequences alone rarely create lasting behavior change ✔ What actually happens when you try to reason with a dysregulated teen ✔ The surprising truth about teen motivation ✔ Why waiting for your teen to "grow out of it" often prolongs unhealthy patterns ✔ The biggest misconception about "fixing" difficult teen behavior ✔ Why the relationship you build with your teen is the most powerful intervention you have The Biggest Takeaway Behavior is information—not the problem. The grades, the attitude, the silence, the conflict, the lack of motivation...these are all signals pointing to something deeper. When parents strengthen the soil (their relationship with themselves) and the roots (their relationship with their teen), the leaves naturally begin to change. Nothing has gone wrong. You aren't behind. You may simply be working at the wrong level of the tree. Resources Mentioned 🌱 Beyond the Surface Quiz Wondering where to start? 56: Why Your Teen Won't Tell You What's Really Going On (And How to Change That)

56: Why Your Teen Won't Tell You What's Really Going On (And How to Change That) Your teen's social world is one of the most powerful influences on their emotional well-being, identity, and decision-making. Yet it's often the part of their life parents know the least about. If you've ever wondered, "Why won't my teen talk to me?" or felt like you're only getting half the story, this episode is for you. Ashley explores what's really happening beneath the surface when teens keep parts of their social lives hidden. The answer usually isn't that they're trying to be secretive—it's that they're navigating one of the most important developmental tasks of adolescence: becoming their own person. You'll learn why emotional safety matters more than having the "right" questions, how your reactions shape what your teen chooses to share, and practical ways to become the kind of parent your teen turns to—even when conversations are uncomfortable. This isn't about getting your teen to tell you everything. It's about creating the kind of relationship where they know they can. In This Episode, You'll Learn: Why your teen's social life is just as important as their academic life. What's really happening when your teen keeps parts of their life private. How adolescence naturally creates a push for independence—and what that means for your relationship How social media has really changed the social landscape for today's teens. Common parental responses that unintentionally shut down conversation. Simple ways to respond with curiosity instead of fear or judgment. Three practical shifts you can make today to strengthen communication with your teen. Key Takeaways ✨Behavior is information, not the problem. ✨Teens are more likely to open up when they feel emotionally safe—not when they feel pressured. ✨ Your response often matters more than the question you ask. ✨ You don't have to know everything happening in your teen's life to have a strong, connected relationship. 55: It's Not Therapy, but it Feels Therapeutic [What I Do & Why it Works]

EP. 55: It's Not Therapy, But It Feels Therapeutic — What I Do and Why It Works If you've ever wondered whether what I do is therapy, whether I can help with your family dynamic, school, or friendships — this episode is the answer. I get some version of this question almost every week. And the honest truth is, what I do doesn't fit neatly into a box. So in this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain entirely — walking you through my framework, my philosophy, and exactly what it looks and feels like to work with me. Whether you just found me or you've been following along for a while, this is the episode to send to the parent in your life who keeps asking: what does Ashley actually do? In This Episode, You'll Learn: Why what I do isn't therapy — and exactly what it is instead The two things at the root of every single family challenge How the Teenage Tree framework works — and why starting with the leaves (behavior) never works What's actually happening in your teen's brain and nervous system — and why they're not difficult on purpose Why you're also in a transformation right now and why that matters more than most people realize The role of neuroscience and universal laws in this work What it actually looks and feels like to work with me — and what becomes possible fast Key Takeaways Every family challenge boils down to two things. Your teen isn't difficult on purpose. You're in your own transformation. Skills are not fixed. The soil [your relationship with yourself] is everything. The Teenage Tree Framework A relationship-first model for understanding how teens — and families — grow: Soil — Your relationship with yourself: self-awareness, self-regulation, self-compassion Roots — Your relationships with others: your teen, your partner, your family dynamic Branches — Tools, systems, and skill-building strategies Leaves — Behaviors and outcomes: grades, friendships, motivation, conflict When we focus only on the leaves, we miss the deeper work happening beneath the surface. Strong roots — and rich soil — create lasting growth. It's Not Therapy — Here's What It Is Therapy is powerful and necessary — and I'm not a replacement for it. I'll always be the first to say when a different modality is needed. What I am is a bridge. A guide. An educator. A mentor. A coach. I speak both languages — parent and teen. I understand what schools expect and what's actually happening at your dinner table. I do what many therapists won't because it's outside their scope, and what most schools can't because they don't have the bandwidth or the relationships built. Most families who work with me feel a real, measurable shift within 30 days. It's not therapy. But I promise you — it feels therapeutic. 54: The (Sneaky) Ways Fear-Based Parenting Creeps Into Everyday Life

It's June. The house looks like a small civilization moved in overnight. One cracker left in the package. Milk on the counter without the lid. Crumbs everywhere. And suddenly — you're staring at a dirty dish and predicting your kid's work ethic at 35. That spiral sound familiar? That's fear-based parenting. And it shows up when you're stressed, but your teen receives it in ways most people don't expect. What We Cover in This Episode This one is about the sneaky, well-intentioned version of fear-based parenting — the kind that creeps into the daily moments before you even realize it's there. You'll walk away understanding: What fear-based parenting actually looks like (hint: it's not harsh or controlling — it's disguised as love) Why your teen feels your energy before they ever hear your words What's really happening when they shut down, argue, or disappear with their headphones on How fear creates the exact dynamic you're trying to avoid — more distance, less connection What to do instead — starting with one simple question you can ask yourself in the moment The Teenage Tree Framework In this episode, Ashley breaks down her signature Teenage Tree Framework — the lens she uses with every client in her private practice and parent membership. The leaves — what you can see: the attitude, the screen time, the dirty dishes, the closed door The branches — the patterns connecting it all The roots — the relationship between you and your teen The soil — your relationship with yourself When fear is driving, we fixate on the leaves and skip straight to more reminders, more consequences, more fixing — without ever tending to the roots. That's where the real work is. The Shift It's not about being permissive. It's not about walking on eggshells. It's about coming from a regulated place — so that when you say something, the energy behind it is love, not fear. Same words. Completely different impact. That is what your teen remembers. That is what builds trust. One Thing to Try This Week Next time you feel yourself spiraling over something small, pause and ask: What am I making this mean right now? Name the fear. Poke holes in it. Then practice responding from love. 💛 Ready to Go Deeper? If this episode hit home and you're ready for real support this summer — Summer Shift is for you. 53: Summer With Teens: The Tools Helping Me Right Now

3 Tools I'm Using to Make Summer Feel Lighter Summer with teenagers is a whole thing. Yes, we love summer for slowing down in some ways. But, in other ways, as parents we have more to manage. More mess. More groceries. More (possible) taxi driving. More free time to wonder what is happening when they're on their own?! More mental load — layered on top of everything else you're already managing.  In this episode, I'm sharing three tools I'm actually using right now — in my own home, with my own kids — that are making this summer feel more manageable, more intentional, and honestly? Kind of fun. 🛠️ The 3 Tools 1. Claude (AI) Not all AI is created equal — and I'll be honest, I think about that a lot. Claude is the AI I've landed on because of how Anthropic approaches ethics and impact. It's not just about the bottom line. That matters to me. I've synced it with my Gmail, Google Drive, and other apps — and it's changed how I operate. Meal planning, grocery lists, landscaping research, business brainstorming. I'm not handing everything over blindly, but I am getting serious time and energy back. For a midlife woman managing a household, a business, and shifting hormones — this is not a small thing.  I've been using it for 3+ months and I can feel a noticable difference in how I much lighter I feel managing so much. 🔗 Check Out Claude 2. The Summer Menu This one (intentionally) lives on your fridge — not in an app. This is what works for my family. Maybe an app would work for yours! I broke our summer into categories: play (indoor + outdoor), chores, service, movement, creativity. Every day, my kids choose five things from the menu. They track it on a chart. They have real choice inside a non-negotiable structure — which, if you've listened here for a while, you know is exactly how I think about boundaries with teens. The non-negotiable: do the five things. The negotiable: which five things. It builds life skills, keeps the chaos manageable, and gets me out of nag mode. I found the original concept on Pinterest and made it my own — you can do the same. 🔗 Summer Menu Template  3. Acorns (Money App) This one's been a game-changer for teaching my kids the value of a dollar — without me having to lecture them about compound interest. Acorns rounds up spare change from everyday purchases and automatically invests or saves it. My kids earn money through their Summer Menu, it goes into their Acorns account, and they've got a debit card to track their spending. Low stakes. Real skills. And the app does the financial literacy education — so it's not coming from me. If your kid is motivated by gamification and you want them to learn money skills without always asking you for $, this is worth a look. 🔗 Acorns App 💛 Ready to Shift Things for the Better this Summer?
