In this new weekly show from the host of The Paranormal Lovers we take a look at some of histories less well known events. Why are they less well known? Because " History is written by the victors." So we are here to look at the other side of the story, and to give people a starting point to learn about the true history of this country.

Episode 88: Wu Zetian Part 1:

Send us Fan Mail We are back this week with another tale out of China of a woman who stepped into a role of power no one would have expected.  Born in the early 600's Wu Zetian became a concubine to one emperor at the young age of 14. After his death, she wormed her way into the heart of his son and before long, she was making decisions for the whole of China.  We must keep in mind, however, that much of the history we have about her is written by men who believe women do not belong in a position of power.   ROH EP 88 Source Notes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu_Zetian Don't forget to head over to http://threadless.com/theparanormallovers and get one of our shirts for only $13 till 10/29. Episode 87: Missing Over the Bass Strait: Frederick Valentich:

Send us Fan Mail The missing person's case we have for you this week gives you a taste of what our show The Paranormal Lovers is like if you have not given it a try yet.  Know to be a little reckless while in the pilots seat, Frederick Valentich went missing on October 21st 1978. Many people believed this to be a routine crash, one that sadly took the life of a young pilot.  But soon whispers began floating around that maybe there was an other worldly explanation for his disappearance. Just weeks before he went missing Frederick had made it known that he was worried about being abducted, to both his father and his girl friend.  Did Frederick get taken, and for the last 48 years has been a captive of aliens; or was this a tragic accident that took the life of a young man? We may never know.  Thanks for joining us today! Episode 86: Shi Yang: The Pirate Queen:

Send us Fan Mail This week we are looking at one badass woman. Piracy has been made to seem romantic in today's media, and honestly this woman does not help.  After the death of her first husband, Shi Yang took control of his confederation of pirates. With six fleets, hundreds of boats and thousands of men at her disposal Shi Yang grew in power over the few years she ran the fleets.  However, the Chinese government reached out to foreign powers that brought more then the pirates wanted to continue to fight. Seeing a chance to use their power to get out of the game, the pirates would retire, but that would not be the end of Shi Yang's story.   ROH EP 86 Source Notes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zheng_Yi_Sao https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanka_people Thanks for joining us today! Episode 85: The Year Without a Summer:

Send us Fan Mail One of our favorite podcast has a saying, "The 1800s of it all." I don't think there is a better phrase for this story, which takes place in 1816.  After a few years of volcanic eruptions, a ton of volcanic debris filled the atmosphere. After one of the largest eruptions to date, the next several months saw abnormal weather that led to famine and riots.  Not everything that came out of this year was terrible; however, art and innovation had time to evolve, giving us some of the most famous works of art ever.  ROH EP 85 Source Notes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_explosivity_index https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1815_eruption_of_Mount_Tambora https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosphere https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratosphere https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Earth https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yangtze_Valley https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_England_temperature https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tephra https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draisine Thanks for joining us today! Episode 84: The Oyo Empire:

Send us Fan Mail This week we are going to take a look at one of the greatest empires to have existed on the continent of Africa before colonizers got their dirty hands on her.  The Oyo Empire is one that may not hold much political power today, but still exist in one form or another. At the height of their reign, the Oyo empire controlled all of Yorubaland, and had authority over several surrounding nations.  Like many other empires through out history this one had times of great prosperity and times of utter disaster. Unlike other empires, they were once even driven from their home for several decades.  Though they may not be the power they once were, much of their culture and many of their traditions still exist today.   ROH EP 84 Source Notes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oyo_Empire#Political_structure https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E1%BB%8Cranyan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oduduwa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogun https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shango Thanks for joining us today! Episode 83: William Buckley: The Wild White Man of Australia:

Send us Fan Mail This week are headed down to the land down under to take a look at a man that had quite an interesting life, though he was thought to be dead for a good portion of it.  After being shipped to Australia when he was falsely convicted of stealing, William Buckley made due with his situation. That was, until his situation was set to change. Then he decided it was high time to escape his imprisonment.  He made his way for a bit with others from the penal colony he had escaped with, until he was suddenly at a point where he found himself alone. Not having the skills needed to survive in the Australian bush, William was on death's door when he was quite literally saved by a local tribe. A tribe that adopted him in and care for him like he was their chief.   ROH EP 83 Source Notes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Buckley_(convict) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weir https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascades_Female_Factory https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gig_(carriage) Thanks for joining us today! Episode 82: Missing in Canada: The Highway of Tears:

Send us Fan Mail This week we are headed to the great white north to look at a place that has been the sight of much pain and violence over the years. Out in the vast wilderness of Canada there is a stretch of Highway 16 that has been renamed the Highway of Tears. It bears this name due to the number of people, mainly indigenous women and girls, that have gone missing, or have been murdered, on or near this road.  This episode gives you three cases that are still unsolved to this day. Even with bodies in two of the cases there have been no leads into what might have happened to these people.   ROH EP 82 Source Notes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highway_of_Tears https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_family_disappearance https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Madison_Scott https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572456892206&sk=reels_tab https://www.facebook.com/groups/224091083447598/posts/902106975646002/ https://globalnews.ca/news/87495/prince-rupert-body-identified-as-nisgaa-teen/ https://www.princegeorgecitizen.com/local-news/prince-rupert-police-beat-3703715 Thanks for joining us today! Episode 81: The Donner Party Part 2:

Send us Fan Mail We are back with the conclusion of our look at the Donner Party and the events they suffered through for months.  Soon the group found themselves trapped on a mountain side that was rapidly being covered with snow. The groups was already low on food, and the next few months would see them eating things none of them would have ever dreamed would pass their lips.  Even when rescue parties began to show up, people had become so used to this way of survival that they kept doing what they felt was necessary.  The events that took place on what is now known as Donner's Pass haunted the survivors for the rest of their lives.   ROH EP 81 Source Notes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donner_Party https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_blindness Thanks for joining us today!
