    74. Eurocamp special - “The Magdeburg Secret? There Isn't One.” | Antonio Núñez on World-Class Coaching

What happens when you join one of the world's most successful swimming programmes and discover that there is no magic formula? In episode 6 of The Sound of Eurocamp, I sit down with Spanish coach Antonio Núñez Álvarez, who recently joined the coaching team at Magdeburg, working alongside Bernd Berkhahn. After spending 13 years in the United States, first as a swimmer and later as a coach, including experience at Virginia Tech, Antonio has returned to Europe to take on a new challenge. And I wanted to know what everyone wants to know. What's the secret behind Magdeburg's success? After seven weeks in the programme, Antonio's answer is surprisingly simple. No magic sessions. No secret formula. Instead, he describes high training volumes, consistent technical work, an extraordinary ability to concentrate and attention to detail, even during the most repetitive training sessions. But this conversation isn't just about what happens in Magdeburg. Antonio is also participating in Eurocamp's new Coach Development Programme. Despite his international experience, he deliberately chose the development pathway rather than a regular coaching role. Why? Because he wanted to challenge himself, learn from other countries and step outside his comfort zone. We explore: What Antonio has discovered during his first weeks working alongside Bernd Berkhahn. Why 60–70 kilometres of swimming a week can mean very different things depending on how the work is performed. How Magdeburg wants to develop its next generation of swimmers from younger ages and across more events. Why coaches from different countries often face the same problems for very different reasons. What Antonio has learned from Eurocamp's Coach Development Programme. Why adapting communication to individual swimmers matters as much as knowing what to coach. How taking home just one or two useful ideas can make an entire week worthwhile. And towards the end, I put Antonio on the spot and ask him to give me honest feedback on the sports psychology session I delivered to the development coaches that morning. He does. Including something I probably needed to hear! Perhaps the real secret of great coaching isn't knowing more than everybody else. It's staying curious enough to keep learning, even when you're surrounded by the best. An honest conversation about ambition, coaching development, consistency and what it takes to create world-class performance. 73. Eurocamp special 5 - What do swimmers actually take home from Eurocamp? And what makes them want to keep swimming?

In episode 5 of The Sound of Eurocamp, I finally convinced two swimmers to join me in the podcast room! Meet Hennie Braastad Orre from Norway and Ella Uhle from Germany, who currently lives and trains in Canada. We start by talking about Eurocamp, what it's like to train alongside swimmers from across Europe, learn from different coaches and become part of something bigger than your own national team. But the conversation soon moves beyond the pool. Ella shares how a planned six-month exchange to Canada at just 15 turned into several years abroad, a new training environment and a different path towards her swimming ambitions. Hennie reflects on her own ambitions, the transition towards senior swimming and why moving abroad isn't necessarily the right choice for everyone. Together, we explore: What swimmers really learn from training with athletes from other countries. The importance of friendships, belonging and finding the right environment. Making big decisions about swimming, school and family. Why early specialisation isn't the only path to success. How to stay motivated, curious and excited about swimming. And towards the end, Hennie shares a thought that I think deserves more attention: "But if you're still enjoying the process, why quit?" Followed by an even better one: "Maybe the best is yet to come." Two young swimmers reminding us that development isn't always about doing more, starting earlier or following the same path as everybody else. Sometimes it's about finding your own way and keeping the joy of swimming alive. And now I want to hear from more swimmers! If you're at Eurocamp, grab a friend, perhaps someone from another country, and come find me! No preparation, no difficult questions, just an open conversation about your experiences, ambitions and what you're learning. Coaches, please encourage your swimmers to join me. Their voices are just as important as yours! 72. Eurocamp special 4: “More Coaches. Less Coaching?” | Geert Janssen on Leadership, Balance and Sharing Knowledge

Can having more coaches actually lead to less coaching? And does working 60 hours a week make you a better coach than someone working 40? In episode 4 of The Sound of Eurocamp, I sit down with Geert Janssen from the Netherlands, a high-performance swimming coach and one of the people behind Eurocamp's new Coach Development Programme. Geert has experienced Eurocamp from three very different perspectives: as a head coach in Potsdam, as head of the organising committee in Eindhoven and now as a leader of the coach development programme in Dijon. But our conversation quickly moves beyond organising camps and training swimmers. We explore an uncomfortable lesson from the previous Eurocamp: Sometimes, having more coaches on pool deck doesn't mean the athletes receive better coaching. And Geert shares something surprisingly personal about his own coaching career. "I'd rather do 40 hours a week really good than 60 hours a week average." We discuss why learning to say no, finding balance and protecting your own well-being might actually make you a better coach. Other topics include: Why great coaches often do the basics exceptionally well rather than constantly looking for new methods. How Eurocamp is developing the next generation of European coaches through leadership, reflection and shared experiences. Why athletes should take more ownership of their own development. Why we need to recognise the club coaches who helped develop athletes long before they reached international success. What happens when world-class coaches share their knowledge with their biggest competitors. Why approaching three coaches you don't know might be one of the best things you can do for your career. And we ask a bigger question: Are we developing better coaches, or are we simply teaching them to do more? An honest conversation about ambition, vulnerability, relationships and the courage to develop yourself, not just your swimmers. Recorded at Eurocamp Dijon 2026. 71. Eurocamp special 3 - What if the best way to make European swimming stronger is to share everything we know, even with the people we're trying to beat?

What if the best way to make European swimming stronger is to share everything we know, even with the people we're trying to beat? In episode 3 of The Sound of Eurocamp, I sit down with Hannes Vitense from Germany, one of the driving forces behind Eurocamp and a man whose vision has helped bring 21 nations, 125 swimmers and hundreds of coaches and experts together in Dijon. But how did it all begin? Surprisingly, with a sleep study involving Germany and the Netherlands in 2022. What started as a small collaboration has grown into something much bigger. A European community where coaches, scientists and swimmers share knowledge, challenge each other and work together to improve performance. And I wanted to ask Hannes some uncomfortable questions. Why should we help our competitors become faster? Is knowledge still a competitive advantage if we give it away? And are we genuinely willing to share our best ideas, or only the things we don't mind others knowing? Hannes has a simple philosophy: "This is not a service here, it's a project growing by us." We explore: How Eurocamp grew from a small collaboration into a European initiative. Why sharing knowledge doesn't necessarily mean losing your competitive advantage. How insecurity and fear of not being good enough can prevent coaches from contributing. Why leadership sometimes means stepping aside and letting others take responsibility. What Eurocamp could become through shared science, education, data and international competition. Why athletes, not coaches or federations, must remain at the centre of everything. And there's a personal side too. We talk about Hannes' passion for coaching, his endless enthusiasm and, yes, his famously long WhatsApp messages! But underneath it all lies a bigger idea. What could we achieve if we stopped protecting what we know and started building something together? An open and inspiring conversation about trust, leadership, sharing and the future of European swimming. 70. Eurocamp special: “Athlete First. Coach Second.” - Henry Hein on Talent, Ego and Knowing When to Let Go

What if the best decision you can make as a coach is to let your best swimmer go? In the second episode of The Sound of Eurocamp, I sit down with Henry Hein from Estonia, three-time Coach of the Year and the coach who helped develop European champion and Olympic finalist Eneli Jefimova. Henry has worked with one of Europe's most exceptional young breaststroke talents. But what makes his story particularly interesting isn't just what they achieved together. It's how he thinks about his responsibility as a coach. "Athlete first and coach second." We talk openly about talent, luck, coaching ego and the difficult decision to let an athlete move on when you can no longer provide the best environment for their development. Henry also challenges some familiar ideas about coaching: Why exceptional talent sometimes needs less interference, not more coaching. Why hard work alone cannot explain success at the highest level. What coaches in smaller swimming nations can achieve by sharing knowledge and learning from each other. Why he took time away from coaching to learn from some of the world's leading coaches. Why great coaching is about relationships, trust and partnership, not just training programmes. And perhaps the most important question of all: Are we developing athletes for their future, or holding on to them for our own careers? Henry reminds us that swimmers may only have one opportunity to reach their potential, while coaches have an entire career to make a difference. An open, thoughtful conversation about ambition, humility and knowing when to step aside. Recorded at Eurocamp Dijon 2026, where swimmers, coaches and experts from across Europe come together to learn, share knowledge and make each other better. 69. Eurocamp special: Can Europe Compete by Sharing More? | Jaimie Fuller

Can Europe Compete by Sharing More? | Jaimie Fuller What if the biggest opportunity for European swimming isn't training harder, but working better together? In the first episode of The Sound of Eurocamp, Kim Dietrichsen sits down with Jaimie Fuller, entrepreneur, co-founder of eo and outspoken advocate for integrity in sport. We begin with a challenging question: How can European swimming become stronger against the traditional powerhouses of Australia and the United States? From there, the conversation goes in some unexpected directions. We explore how technology is changing the way we understand swimming technique, why more power doesn't necessarily mean more speed, and what happens when athletes take ownership of their own development and data. But Jaimie's story goes far beyond the swimming pool. From challenging the doping culture surrounding Lance Armstrong to confronting FIFA and its sponsors over human rights, he shares why standing up for your values sometimes comes at a personal and commercial cost. Throughout the conversation, one question keeps returning: What could we achieve if we became better at sharing knowledge, challenging each other and bringing people together? Recorded at Eurocamp Dijon 2026, where swimmers, coaches and experts from across Europe come together to learn, collaborate and develop the future of swimming. 68.
