Episode #4.5 - Dog Routines: How to Build Predictability Without Creating Rigidity

Does your dog expect breakfast, walks or bedtime at exactly the same time every day? Routine can help dogs feel secure because it makes daily life more predictable. But when every event happens at precisely the same time, in precisely the same order, we can accidentally create expectations that make ordinary changes harder to cope with. In this episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, I explain how to build a reliable routine while gently teaching flexibility around meals, walks, rest and everyday human movement. We look at why small, manageable variations can be useful, why flexibility should never mean deliberately making your dog uncomfortable, and why the individual dog in front of you should determine how much change is appropriate. You’ll also hear why apparently insignificant things such as putting on your shoes, picking up your keys or simply standing up can become meaningful predictors for a dog, particularly when those actions have repeatedly led to something important. For dogs experiencing separation anxiety, those associations require particular care. Repeatedly exposing a distressed dog to departure cues until they supposedly “get used to it” is not the answer. 🎧 Watch the full episode and take a fresh look at your dog’s daily routine. If you need professional support with separation anxiety or your dog’s behaviour, I offer online consultations and personalised training programmes through Pawfect Training Academy. Episode #4.4 - Your Dog’s First Night Home: Sleep, Crying and Helping Them Feel Safe

Your dog’s first night home can be difficult. The house becomes quiet, you head to bed, and suddenly the crying starts. Should you ignore them? Will comforting them create dependence? Should a puppy or newly adopted dog be expected to sleep alone immediately? In this episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, I explain why I do not recommend leaving a distressed dog to cry it out, and why offering support during those first nights does not mean you are creating a dog who can never cope independently. We look at: • Why the first night can be difficult for puppies and adult rescue dogs • What crying and restlessness might actually be telling you • Where your new dog should sleep • Why comfort does not automatically reinforce fear • How to move gradually towards your preferred sleeping arrangements • Why stopping crying does not necessarily mean a dog feels safe • The difference between first-night distress and separation anxiety • How to begin building genuine independence without deliberately causing distress Supporting your dog when everything is unfamiliar is not something you need to feel guilty about. Independence can be taught gradually, at a pace your dog can cope with. If your dog is struggling with separation anxiety, I offer online consultations and personalised training programmes through Pawfect Training Academy. Epsiode #4.3 - Bringing Your New Dog Home: What to Do in the First 72 Hours

Bringing a new dog home is exciting, but your dog may experience those first few days very differently. They have entered an unfamiliar environment filled with new smells, sounds, people and routines. Welcoming them with visitors, long walks, constant attention and immediate expectations can quickly become overwhelming. In this episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, I explain how to support your dog through their first 72 hours at home without placing them under unnecessary pressure. You will learn: • What decompression really means • Why 72 hours is a guide, not a settling deadline • How to create a quiet and predictable routine • Why your dog may eat, sleep or behave differently at first • How to introduce children, visitors and resident dogs carefully • Why long walks and constant entertainment can be too much • How to begin thinking about home-alone time safely • Which physical changes require veterinary advice Your dog does not know that this is their forever home. Trust develops through repeated experiences in which they feel safe, heard and able to make choices. If your dog is struggling to settle, cope with being alone or adjust to their new home, Pawfect Training Academy provides force-free and fear-free support through online consultations and personalised training programmes. Episode #4.2 - Choosing the Right Dog: Find the Dog That Actually Fits Your Life

Choosing a dog because you love their appearance, feel sorry for them or have always wanted that particular breed can be the beginning of a serious mismatch. The better question is: can this individual dog thrive in the life you actually live? In Episode 2 of the new series of Paws and Pawsitivity, certified dog trainer and behaviour consultant Jamie Watkinson-Harvey looks beyond appearance and breed stereotypes to explore what guardians should consider before choosing a dog. We talk about age, temperament, energy, health, previous history and individual needs. We also look at why breed can provide useful information without allowing us to predict exactly how an individual dog will behave. And then there's the Tuesday morning test. Forget the beautiful photograph and imagine an ordinary wet Tuesday in November. You're tired. You've got work. It's raining sideways. Your dog still has physical, emotional and behavioural needs. Does the dog you're considering fit that life? If you're thinking about bringing a dog home, watch this alongside Episode 1, Before You Bring Your Dog Home, and make the decision with your head as well as your heart. 🐾 Need professional help with your dog? Episode #4.1 - Before You Bring a Dog Home: Does a Dog Really Fit Your Life?

Bringing a dog home can be one of the most emotional decisions you make. A photograph catches your attention, a puppy falls asleep in your lap, or a rescue dog looks directly into your eyes. Suddenly, your sensible questions disappear. Before committing, you need to know whether that particular dog genuinely fits your time, finances, home and everyday lifestyle. In this episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, certified dog trainer and behaviour consultant Jamie Watkinson-Harvey explains what prospective dog guardians should consider before making their decision. You will learn: Why puppies require far more time and supervision than many people expect How working hours and time alone could affect your future dog Why breed and appearance cannot guarantee compatibility Which ongoing and unexpected costs need consideration How your home, household and current animals affect the decision Why choosing an adult dog may be more suitable than choosing a puppy How a cooling-off period can protect both you and the dog Watch the full episode before committing to a dog, then share it with somebody who is considering bringing one home. Episode #3.25 - Are Walks Making Your Dog’s Behaviour Worse?: More Isn’t Always Better

Does your dog really need another walk, or do they actually need time to recover? In this episode of Paws and Pawsitivity, certified dog trainer Jamie Watkinson-Harvey challenges one of the most common assumptions in dog ownership: that more exercise automatically creates better behaviour. For reactive, fearful, anxious or easily overwhelmed dogs, walks can sometimes add more stress and arousal to an already filling emotional bucket. We explore trigger stacking, emotional regulation and why yesterday’s difficult experiences can influence how your dog copes today. We’ll also look at why exhausting a dog isn’t the same as helping them regulate, why repeated exposure doesn’t automatically help dogs “get used to” their triggers, and how shorter walks, quieter environments, enrichment and proper recovery can sometimes be the better choice. Most importantly, this episode will help you replace one question: “How much exercise has my dog had today?” with a much more useful one: “How has my dog coped with today?” 🎧 New episodes land every Tuesday at 8am GMT. 📍 Available on YouTube via @PTA_Dog.
