    The Ramble: The Uphill Athlete Weight Problem

    The mountains can feel like they’re calling your name, and sometimes the hardest part isn’t the altitude, the weather, or the miles. It’s looking at the scale, looking at your body, and wondering how you’re supposed to be an uphill athlete when you first have to fight your body. I get personal about that exact struggle. I talk through my history with fitness swings, why trekking in Nepal lit a fire in me, and how Everest Base Camp and a Mera Peak attempt taught me what high altitude trekking really demands. We also get into the messy reality of weight loss when your tools change, including what happened when my insurance stopped covering GLP-1 medication and the weight came back faster than I wanted to admit. From there, I lay out what I’m doing now: recommitting to consistent strength and endurance training, using treadmill and stair climbers to rebuild climbing fitness, and planning a thorough annual physical to get a clear baseline. I share a specific target for next year, Yala Peak in Nepal, plus the mental side of chasing big outdoor adventure goals in your late 40s: motivation, frustration, knee aches, and the choice to keep going anyway.     South Africa: Cape Town Coastlines To Kruger Safaris

    You can spend 20-plus hours getting somewhere and still be stunned the moment you step off the plane. South Africa hit us like that. One minute we’re dragging ourselves through a punishing economy-flight journey, and the next we’re rolling into Cape Town with the skyline lit up and the coastline begging for daylight. We talk candidly about the travel logistics, what worked, what didn’t, and the small choices that made the trip easier, like staying near the V&A Waterfront and knowing exactly where to grab water and snacks without wandering far. Cape Town gives us the kind of “how is this real?” scenery travelers chase: the Sea Point and Camps Bay drive, a wild boat ride out of Hout Bay to Seal Island, penguins in the wild at Simon’s Town, and standing at Cape Point near the edge of the continent. But we also don’t dodge the harder parts. Safety is a real consideration, and so is the visible economic divide. We share what we noticed on the ground so you can plan with clear eyes, not fear or fantasy. Then the trip shifts from city views to pure bucket-list energy: a Kruger National Park safari.     Disney Dreams Part 3A: Disney With a Passport

    Ever watched travel videos and casually suggested an overseas trip, only for someone to call your bluff? That's exactly what happened when my wife asked, "Well, are you going to go?" after I mentioned Tokyo Disney while watching YouTube. Next thing I knew, I was researching flights and discovering three simultaneous festivals at Tokyo Disney Resort—the Food and Wine Festival and Duffy's 20th anniversary at DisneySea, plus a Donald Duck celebration at Disneyland. With surprisingly reasonable flights from Houston and some strategic planning, this quick five-day adventure suddenly made perfect sense. I'll spend two days at Tokyo Disney Resort, staying at the Oriental Hotel Tokyo Bay (a Disney partner hotel with convenient shuttles), followed by three days exploring Tokyo proper from a hotel in Okachimachi—perfectly positioned between Akihabara and Ueno stations on the Yamanote Line. Beyond Disney magic, Tokyo offers endless treasures: hunting for unique Japanese trading cards in Akihabara, feasting at my favorite sushi restaurant in Ikebukuro, and procuring coveted Liberty of London fabric for my quilting-enthusiast wife.
