A Friend's Death and the Living God

Reflecting on Matthew 16:13-20, Zac shares the story of his late friend Vince — a man who bore juvenile arthritis and many surgeries with faith— and Vince's sudden death just a week after a road trip together, prompting Zac to imagine Christ asking Vince at his particular judgment the same question He asked Peter: "Who do you say that I am?" Zac unpacks how Peter's confession of Christ as "the Son of the living God" was a freely given gift from the Father, not a product of reason, and how that same gift invites believers to go on the offensive against "the gates of hell" through the overflow of joy in their own hearts. The episode closes with a meditation spoken in Christ's voice, assuring the listener that despite their fears of being forgotten or unloved, they are known, sought, and worth dying for. Reflection Questions: Who in your life, like Vince, has shown you Christ through their suffering carried with joy?If Christ asked you today, "Who do you say that I am?" — how would your actions answer, not just your words? What would it look like to love Jesus "more" by trying to know Him more this week? Exalted Through Humility

This episode pairs Francisco Bayeu's The Assumption of the Virgin with the Gospel story of the Canaanite woman (Matthew 15:21-28), drawing out humility as the thread connecting both. Just as Mary appears at the bottom of Bayeu's painting despite being assumed into heaven's heights, the Canaanite woman humbles herself to accept being called a "dog" and asks only for crumbs, and both are exalted precisely because of their lowliness. The episode closes with a meditation imagining Our Lady witnessing the Canaanite woman's encounter with Jesus, framing Mary's own self-description as "lowly handmaid" alongside Justa's perseverance and faith. Reflection Questions: Where in your life are you being invited to take "the lowest place" rather than assert your own worth?Jesus is silent to the Canaanite woman at first. How do you respond when God seems silent to your own pleas?Bayeu placed Mary at the very bottom of a painting meant to be viewed looking upward toward heaven. What does it mean that God "fills from the bottom up"? Near to Him

In Matthew 14:22–33, Peter steps out of the boat and walks toward Jesus in the midst of a storm, revealing a heart that desires intimacy with Christ more than safety or certainty. Through Carlo Maratti's painting, this reflection explores how vulnerability, trust, and courage allow us to leave the comfort of the boat and draw near to Jesus even when the waves of fear, suffering, and confusion surround us. Ultimately, the episode reminds us that when we begin to sink, Christ's first response is mercy—stretching out His hand to save us before correcting us, teaching us to pray Peter's simple prayer: "Lord, save me." Reflection Questions: Why do you think Peter was the only disciple willing to step out of the boat? What "boats" of comfort or security are hardest for you to leave behind? What would it look like this week to take one concrete step toward Jesus, even if it feels risky or uncomfortable? His Heart, Our Hope

In Matthew 14:13–21, Jesus takes five loaves and two fish, blesses them, breaks them, and feeds over five thousand people, leaving twelve baskets of leftovers. The episode explores how Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus reveals that these same Eucharistic actions point to Christ's desire to satisfy not only physical hunger but also the deepest hunger of the human heart. Through the Eucharist and the Mass, Jesus invites us to encounter His Sacred Heart, discover true hope, and receive an abundance of grace that overflows into the lives of others. Reflection Questions: Why do you think Jesus chose to use bread as the means of feeding both physical and spiritual hunger? What "leftovers" of grace, joy, or love has God given you that could be shared with others? After hearing this reflection, what is one practical way you can allow Jesus to fill the hunger of your heart this week? Worth Everything

Reflecting on Jesus' parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price (Matthew 13:44-52), this episode explores Eduard Veith's Madonna and Child Surrounded by Angels, revealing how the Holy Family's poverty conceals the riches of heaven. Through the winter landscape, the care of the angels, and the imagined gaze of St. Joseph upon Mary and Jesus, we discover that the Kingdom of God is worth surrendering everything to possess. The episode challenges us to ask whether we have truly sold all that we cling to in our hearts so that Christ may become our greatest treasure. Reflection Questions: If someone observed my priorities, time, and spending habits, what would they conclude is my true treasure? What fears might be preventing me from trusting God more completely? What practical step can I take this week to make Christ more clearly the treasure of my heart? Crowned by the Cross

In this episode, we pray with the Gospel of the wheat and weeds, where Jesus teaches, "Let both grow together until the harvest" (Matthew 13:30), and reflect on the icon of Constantine and St. Helen holding the Cross. Through the story of Constantine's conversion and the centrality of the Cross in the icon, we discover that true authority is found not in earthly power but in surrender to Christ, the King of kings. Jesus invites us to stop playing the role of judge, trust His timing, and allow Him to transform the weeds in our hearts into wheat for His Kingdom. Reflection Questions: What "weeds" in my life am I most tempted to hide from God?When Jesus looks upon me with open arms from heaven, what do I imagine He sees in my heart? Are there people in my life whom I have written off as incapable of conversion or growth? Everything is Gift

Drawing from Christ's Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13:1-9, this episode reflects on The Angelus by Jean-François Millet and the profound generosity of God who continually sows His gifts into our lives. Through the image of two poor laborers pausing their work to pray, we explore how the Incarnation elevates both the dignity of human work and the dignity of the poor, revealing Christ's presence in ordinary labor and dependence upon divine providence. As Jesus says, "A farmer went out to sow" (Matthew 13:3), so too God lavishly scatters the seed of His love upon every heart, inviting us to receive everything as gift and to work alongside Him in building His Kingdom. Reflection Questions: What areas of my life do I still struggle to see as gifts from God?Am I more focused on the gifts God gives, or on the Giver Himself? If Christ were standing beside me during my work tomorrow, how would it change the way I approach it? In Love, At Rest

Drawing from Jesus' invitation in Matthew 11:25–30, this episode explores how God reveals His deepest truths not to the powerful and self-sufficient, but to those who become like spiritual infants and allow themselves to be loved. Through Interment of Saint Cecilia in the Roman Catacombs by Luis de Madrazo, we discover how St. Cecilia's martyrdom reveals the paradox of the Gospel: that true rest is found not in escaping burdens, but in surrendering them to Christ, who says, "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28-30). As we conclude the month with an examen, we are invited to become childlike before the Father, receive His love, and find the rest that only Christ can give. Reflection Questions: What burdens have I been carrying that Jesus never asked me to carry alone? What truth might God be trying to reveal in the hidden "catacombs" of my heart? As I begin a new month, what is one concrete step I can take to live more deeply in God's love and rest rather than in anxiety and striving?
