Former SEC Attorney Explains What Every Financial Advisor Should Know

What happens if the SEC comes knocking on your door? Most financial advisors spend years mastering markets, client relationships, and business development. Far fewer spend time understanding the regulatory environment they're operating in until they're forced to. That's the low view. The vaulted view is understanding the terrain before you ever have to navigate it. In this episode of Vaulted Views, I sit down with Nick Morgan, former SEC Senior Trial Counsel, who spent seven years prosecuting SEC enforcement cases before spending nearly two decades defending investment advisors. Few people have seen the regulatory process from both sides the way Nick has. Together, we discuss how SEC examinations become enforcement investigations, why regulatory awareness matters for every independent advisor and RIA, and what advisors should understand about the system they're operating within. This conversation is also personal. My father, Ray Lucia Sr., challenged the SEC all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in Ray Sr. Lucia v. SEC, a landmark case that changed how administrative law judges are appointed. That experience shaped the way I think about regulation, leadership, and the responsibility advisors have to understand the profession they're building, not just the clients they serve. This episode isn't about fear. It's about awareness. Because building a great advisory business isn't just about growing AUM, improving operations, or implementing AI. It's also about understanding the rules, responsibilities, and realities that come with independence. What actually happens during an SEC examination and investigationLessons from someone who worked inside the SEC—and later defended advisors against itThe story behind Lucia v. SEC and why it still matters todayWhy compliance is about more than checking boxesWhat independent advisors and RIAs should know as they build their firmsHow the Investor Choice Advocates Network (ICAN) is working to support precedent-setting legal casesWhy understanding your regulatory environment is part of becoming a better business ownerIf you're serious about building a durable advisory practice, this is a conversation worth having. Because the advisors who build firms that last don't just understand markets. They understand the environment they operate in.

Your AI Playbook for Financial Advisors (Where to Start)

Everyone is talking about AI. Very few are showing financial advisors where to start. In this episode of Vaulted Views, I share the exact playbook we've been building inside Quotient to help advisors move beyond experimenting with AI and start building real systems. Here's what I believe: The firms that win over the next decade won't simply use AI. They'll build their business around it. LPL. Orion. Anthropic. Schwab. The biggest names in wealth management have already made their bet. AI is becoming table stakes. The real opportunity isn't having access to AI. It's building proprietary systems that reflect how you serve clients and run your practice. This isn't about replacing advisors. It's about making great advisors dramatically more effective. If you're serious about building a modern advisory practice that scales through systems instead of simply adding more people, this episode is for you. In this episode, you'll learn: Why AI is quickly becoming table stakes for financial advisorsThe difference between using AI and building AI-powered systemsHow to create a competitive advantage with proprietary workflowsWhere most advisors should start (and what to avoid)The framework we're using inside Quotient to build an AI-first advisory businessHow AI can help you scale your practice without simply hiring more peopleThis isn't about replacing advisors. It's about making great advisors dramatically more effective. If you're serious about building a modern advisory practice that scales through systems instead of simply adding more people, this episode is for you. 0:00 – Introduction: AI Is for Everyone 1:49 – Why AI Strategy Matters: Competitive Positioning 3:16 – What AI Means for Solo vs. Larger Advisory Teams 4:32 – Step 1: Choose Your LLM (ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity) 5:42 – Why I Chose Claude + Claude CoWork Explained 6:41 – Agentic AI: The Future of AI in Your Practice 8:43 – Step 2: Apply AI to Your Biggest Time Drain 10:22 – Step 3: Build From One Win 10:44 – Compliance Considerations 11:45 – Closing: AI as Your Operating System 👉 Join the Quotient Advisor Community: https://quotientadvisor.com 👉 Subscribe to my newsletter:https://rayluciajr.com/newsletter 👉 Subscribe for weekly Vaulted Views episodes:   / @rayluciajr   👉 Follow me on Instagram:  / rayluciajr   👉 Connect with me on LinkedIn:  / rayluciajr   👉 Follow me on X:https://x.com/rayluciajr

How Financial Advisors Build Scale with AI

Everyone is talking about AI.The real question is who's building with it.In this episode of Vaulted Views, I take you behind the scenes and show you exactly how we're using AI inside the Quotient Advisor ecosystem. Not as a productivity hack. Not as a chatbot. As infrastructure.Because here's what's happening...LPL expanded its partnership with Anthropic. Orion did the same thing. Schwab recently reported that 63% of RIAs are already using AI in some capacity. The adoption curve isn't coming. It's already here. But that's not the vaulted view. The vaulted view is realizing that AI itself will become table stakes.Every advisor will have access to the same tools. The advisors who win will be the ones who build systems on top of them.Systems that reflect how they serve clients.Systems that reflect how they think.Systems that create leverage across their business. In this episode, I show you the actual systems we're using today, including: An automated content engine that creates advisor-focused content aligned with our strategy and brandAI-powered workflow automation inside our operating systemFinancial modeling and business planning tools built with AICustom software developed using AI coding toolsMy AI avatar, "Junior Ray"Purpose-built AI agents supporting content, operations, and researchAdvisor-specific AI skills built around The Bucket Strategy® and the Quotient Advisor ecosystemThis isn't about replacing people. It's about making the people you already have dramatically more effective. It's about creating leverage. And ultimately, it's about helping more advisors serve more clients at a higher level.Because my mission hasn't changed:Help 1 million American households retire with confidence through financial advisors.AI is simply helping us scale that mission one system at a time.⏱ TIMESTAMPS0:00 — The AI Shift Is Already Happening0:47 — Why Most Advisors Are Missing the Real Opportunity1:19 — Showing the Receipts: AI Systems in Action1:35 — Building an Automated Content Engine2:12 — Why We Use Multiple AI Models2:36 — Workflow Automation & Self-Managing Systems3:54 — Building Financial Models with AI4:19 — Creating Software with AI4:57 — Meet "Junior Ray"6:35 — AI Agents & Digital Team Members7:20 — Custom AI Skills for Financial Advisors7:58 — Scaling the Mission Through AI---👉 Join the Quotient Advisor Community: https://quotientadvisor.com👉 Subscribe to my newsletter: https://rayluciajr.com/newsletter👉 Subscribe for weekly Vaulted Views episodes👉 Follow me on Instagram:   / rayluciajr  👉 Connect with me on LinkedIn:   / rayluciajr  👉 Follow me on X: https://x.com/rayluciajr

The Advisor Differentiation Playbook (Structured Products Explained)

Financial advisors say they have a unique view of the market. But when you look at their portfolios… they all look the same. In this episode of Vaulted Views, I sit down with Chris Mee, Managing Director at Insperex, to break down one of the biggest missed opportunities in our industry: using structured products to create defined, differentiated outcomes for clients. This isn’t just a conversation about investments. It’s a conversation about how advisors evolve from managing portfolios… to designing strategies that actually reflect their thinking. Because here’s the reality: If your strategy doesn’t clearly express your view… your client won’t feel it. And if your client can’t feel it, they won’t value it. What You’ll Learn: - Why most advisor portfolios look identical (even with different market views) - How structured products combine growth + protection in one strategy - The flaw in traditional 60/40 portfolios - How to differentiate your practice in a commoditized world - Real ways advisors are using structured products to grow AUM - How to introduce this to clients without overcomplicating your process - A simple way to start using structured products this quarter Key Insight: Structured products aren't just about returns. They're about clarity, control, and communicating a strategy your client can actually understand. Who This is For: - wirehouse or bank advisors thinking about independence - growth-focused advisors looking to scale - advisors tired of competing on performance alone - anyone who wants to build a more intentional, differentiated practice Timestamps 00:00 Why most advisors operate at a “low view” 02:40 What structured products actually are 10:07 Why sophistication is moving to independent advisors 13:02 The real opportunity for advisors today 18:15 Why structured products are growing rapidly 21:14 10 advisors, 10 views… same portfolios 22:16 Expressing your market view through strategy 24:20 Differentiation vs commoditization 25:57 Custom defined outcomes for clients 29:59 How advisors can get started (simple first step) 33:03 How to gather more assets from existing clients 34:43 Low view vs vaulted view mindset Take the next step: 👉 If you’re ready to go beyond portfolios and start building a real advisory business, join the Quotient Advisor community: https://quotientadvisor.com (https://quotientadvisor.com/)👉Subscribe to my newsletter: https://rayluciajr.com/newsletter👉Subscribe to my YouTube channel for weekly Vaulted Views podcast episodes/ @rayluciajr 👉Follow me on Instagram: / rayluciajr 👉Connect with me on LinkedIn: / rayluciajr 👉Follow me on X: https://x.com/rayluciajr
