You’ll hear the stories behind Henry Johnson, whose brutal fight against a German raiding party eventually earned him the Medal of Honor; Needham Roberts, the wounded soldier Johnson fought to protect; James Reese Europe, the groundbreaking bandleader who carried Black American music across France; Noble Sissle, who went from military service to helping change Broadway; and the men of the 369th who built a legacy far greater than the battlefield. You’ll also hear how these soldiers trained in a segregated America, crossed the Atlantic, fought alongside French forces, endured months near the front lines, returned to a massive homecoming in Harlem—and discovered that surviving the war did not end their fight for dignity and equality.     THE N-WORD: HOW A WORD BECAME A WEAPON

    How did a word connected to the color black become one of the most painful and controversial words in American history? In this powerful solo episode of Let’s Talk About It with Lou J, Lou J explores the origin, history, transformation, and continuing debate surrounding the N-word. We go beyond simply asking where the word came from. We examine how language became connected to slavery, racism, segregation, Jim Crow, humiliation, power, identity, and eventually reclamation.
