Diamond in the Rough: Why Aladdin and Jasmine Are the Best Disney Couple

Takeaways Out of every couple Ashley and Jesse have covered so far in Hot Disney Summer, they agree Aladdin and Jasmine have the best shot — because they're evenly matched, not because the story is realistic. The whole relationship kicks off as a trauma bond (he saves her, she's "beholden" to him) before it becomes something real, built on both of them feeling trapped and craving freedom.Aladdin's whole courtship is built on a lie — he never tells Jasmine he's not really a prince — and Ashley and Jesse dig into why he thinks that's the only way to get the girl.Ashley gets unexpectedly personal, tracing her own "unrealistic idea of love" — the fantasy of being captured, secretly admired, and saved — back to not feeling outwardly loved as a kid.Jafar isn't after the princess at all. Ashley and Jesse land on the theory that he's "power sexual" — money, power, hustle, repeat — and that obsession is exactly what takes him down.Ashley and Jesse are deep into Hot Disney Summer, and this week they're tackling one of the biggest ones: Aladdin. Before they even get into the movie, the two go on a full nostalgia detour about the notoriously difficult Sega Aladdin game, childhood consoles, and how their families' basements turned into the neighborhood LAN party house — proof that this episode starts exactly like a real couple catching up before getting to the point. Once they get to the movie, the hosts walk through Agrabah beat by beat: Jafar's obsession with the Cave of Wonders and the "diamond in the rough," Jasmine sneaking out of the palace and nearly losing a hand over an apple, and Aladdin stepping in to save her — which Ashley calls out as a trauma bond dressed up as a meet-cute. From there, the two dig into what actually makes Aladdin and Jasmine work: they're both trapped, just in opposite directions, and they recognize that in each other before anything romantic happens. The conversation turns genuinely reflective when Ashley admits that Aladdin — and Disney movies like it — shaped a version of love she's had to unlearn as an adult. She talks about romanticizing the idea of being captured, being secretly admired, and being saved, and traces it back to not feeling seen growing up. It's one of the most honest moments of the series so far, and it changes the way the rest of the episode lands. Jesse, meanwhile, is fully committed to his theory that Jafar isn't after Jasmine at all — he's after power, plain and simple, and every "quid pro quo" wish only proves it. The two also settle some Hot Disney Summer business: Aladdin and Jasmine officially take the top couple spot so far, ahead of Ariel and Peter Pan, Belle and Quasimodo, and the rest of the bracket. They close out with a Robin Williams tribute, a FernGully rabbit hole, and a promise to keep Hot Disney Summer going after a trip to Wyoming.

Pocahontas Was Never a Love Story | Disney vs. History

Disney's Pocahontas has long been presented as a sweeping romance, but how much of the story is actually true? In this episode of The Love Story Podcast, Ashley and Jesse continue their Hot Disney Summer series by taking a closer look at one of Disney's most controversial films. Together, they unpack the fictional romance between Pocahontas and John Smith, compare it to the real historical events, and discuss why this relationship never felt believable even within the movie itself. From love at first sight to leaving everything behind for romance, they explore the relationship dynamics Disney celebrates and whether those ideas hold up in real life. The conversation also dives into the tragic true story of Pocahontas, how history was dramatically rewritten for family entertainment, and why understanding the real events changes the way we watch the film today. Along the way, Ashley and Jesse debate which Disney characters would actually make better matches, nominate Tarzan as Pocahontas' ideal partner, and continue their tradition of pairing Disney villains with equally chaotic soulmates. If you love Disney movies, relationship analysis, behind-the-scenes history, and honest conversations about what makes love stories work (or completely fall apart), this episode is for you. Takeaways Why Pocahontas and John Smith weren't built for long-term success. The surprising historical truth behind Disney's version of Pocahontas. Why community and family support matter more than romantic chemistry alone.Ashley and Jesse's favorite alternative Disney matchups.A fresh perspective on one of Disney's most debated animated films.Key Topics Covered: Disney's Pocahontas reviewThe real history of PocahontasJohn Smith vs. the historical recordLove at first sight in Disney moviesRelationship compatibilityDisney romance analysisHistorical inaccuracies in Disney filmsHot Disney Summer seriesPocahontas and Tarzan as a better matchRanking Disney couples based on real relationship potential

Top Half Fish or Bottom Half Fish? Ashley and Jesse Settle the Biggest Little Mermaid Debate

Takeaways Ariel's real problem isn't Ursula — it's that she fell in love with the idea of Eric, not Eric himself, and Ashley and Jesse aren't sure she ever truly gets to know him.The original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale ending is genuinely dark: instead of a happily ever after, Ariel faces the choice of killing the prince or dissolving into sea foam. Disney made the right call.Peter Pan, not Eric, might actually be Ariel's perfect Disney match — and Ashley and Jesse make a pretty compelling case for it.Summary of the episode Hot Disney Summer is officially underway, and Ashley and Jesse are kicking off the season with The Little Mermaid. Between snack debates, personality quizzes, and an extended riff on what life would actually look like if you were top half fish, bottom half human, this episode is a perfect snapshot of why this podcast works: genuine conversation with the movie as the jumping-off point. The episode opens with Jesse getting a personality test courtesy of Ashley, who determines — through rigorous scientific questioning — that Jesse is a Flounder. He accepts this with surprising grace. From there, the hosts walk through the movie's key beats: Ariel's constant rule-breaking, Sebastian's thankless job as her ward, the Faustian bargain with Ursula, and the iconic kitchen scene with the French chef that both hosts agree is an absolute classic. The conversation takes a left turn into the original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, which Ashley brings up mid-episode. In that version, Ariel doesn't get a happy ending — she gets a knife and a choice: kill the prince or dissolve into sea foam. She chooses sea foam. Ashley's take: the sea foam had integrity. Jesse's take: he would have found a loophole. They debate Ariel's perfect Disney match at length — cycling through Aladdin (too toxic), the Beast (she'd be trading one overbearing father figure for another), and John Smith (too mission-oriented) before landing on Peter Pan as the obvious answer. Wanderlust, shenanigans, no agenda. It tracks. The episode closes with the relationship rating: Ashley gives Ariel and Eric a 12 out of 10 — she believes Eric would do everything in his power to make Ariel feel at home on land. Jesse gives them a seven, citing the time pressure, the lack of real conversation, and the sneaking suspicion that Ariel might eventually start kicking pebbles down the street wishing she was back under the sea. Next up: Pocahontas. Key Topics Covered: Jesse's personality type according to Ashley's quiz: a Flounder — down for anything, a good watchdog, not a rule-follower, perpetually flounderingThe original dark Hans Christian Andersen ending: knife, prince, sea foam, and a mermaid with more integrity than mostThe top half fish, bottom half human debate and whether a trench coat and Muay Thai training could make it work on landWhether Ariel would actually be happy on shore long-term — Ashley thinks Eric saves her, Jesse thinks she'd miss homeAriel's perfect Disney match: why Aladdin would be toxic, why the Beast would just be another King Triton, and why Peter Pan is the obvious answerUrsula's perfect Disney match: the Beast — and Jesse makes a compelling case for why it would work in year 20Flotsam vs. jetsam, defined correctly on the second tryThe Sebastian crab vs. lobster mixup (Jesse acknowledges this was a moment)The dill pickle chip licking incident and why it is or isn't comparable to licking peanut butter off a Nutty BuddyRelationship rating: Ashley gives Ariel and Eric 12/10; Jesse gives them a 7

Hunchback of Notre Dame Review: Disney’s Darkest Love Story?

Takeaways Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame remains one of the studio's darkest and most mature animated films.Quasimodo's story explores isolation, acceptance, and the search for genuine human connection.Ashley and Jesse debate whether Phoebus and Esmeralda's relationship would realistically survive beyond the movie.Hot Disney Summer continues as Ashley and Jesse revisit Disney's 1996 animated classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Jesse experiences the film for the first time while Ashley revisits a childhood favorite and discovers just how dark and mature the story really is. The conversation explores Quasimodo's tragic upbringing, Frollo's disturbing obsession with Esmeralda, the film's themes of prejudice and acceptance, and why this movie never achieved the same mainstream popularity as other Disney classics. Ashley and Jesse also discuss the surprising emotional depth of the story, the differences between Disney's adaptation and Victor Hugo's original novel, and whether Phoebus and Esmeralda have any chance of making their relationship work after the credits roll. As always, the discussion takes several entertaining detours, including Disney matchmaking, bee colonies, Rick Moranis hypotheticals, and what exactly qualifies as a "Hot Disney Summer." Can Men and Women Really Be Friends? The Biggest Question in "When Harry Met Sally"

Takeaways The "men and women can't be friends" debate is more nuanced than Harry makes it sound — and Ashley and Jesse prove it by applying it directly to their own relationship.Harry Burns is arguably in love with Sally long before the iconic New Year's Eve speech, but fear of vulnerability keeps him from acting on it.Ashley and Jesse are back with another deep dive into the love stories that shaped how we think about romance — and this week, they're tackling one of the all-time classics: When Harry Met Sally. Released in 1989, the film follows Harry Burns and Sally Albright from their chaotic college road trip to New York all the way to a New Year's Eve declaration that has been quoted at weddings ever since. The episode opens with the hosts going full debate mode on whether Harry and Sally's dynamic is truly cat and mouse — or something more complicated. Ashley makes the case that Harry has been quietly obsessed with Sally from the jump, while Jesse pushes back and argues it's less of a chase and more of a slow burn between two emotionally unavailable people who keep orbiting each other until the timing finally aligns. Spoiler: they do eventually agree. Sort of. The conversation gets genuinely personal when Ashley opens up about how watching this movie felt like a mirror, reflecting some of her own tendencies to run with her feelings rather than sit with them.
