2SSM • Sports Themes

VINCERRRROOOOOOOOOO!! Dave and Tom dust off their shell suits, their BASF tellys, and prepare to take a nostalgic trip back to the glory days of sports on TV, when theme tunes were proper theme tunes and apparently every sporting event needed an orchestral fanfare big enough to announce the arrival of the Queen. In this episode, the boys tackle some of the most iconic sports themes ever to grace the telly. From the unmistakable Snooker theme (Drag Racer) music so classy you can practically hear the balls being potted in a waistcoat... to the legendary F1 theme, (The Chain) which made even changing gear in a Ford Fiesta feel like a high-speed pursuit around Silverstone. They'll also enter the arena for Gladiators, where the theme tune was louder than a shoulder pad and twice as subtle, before taking a trip to the iconic Channel 4 Racing theme, and Grandstand the BBC sporting institution that could somehow make everything from horse racing to rugby feel like the most important event since the moon landing. Then of course...there’s Nessun Dorma, the operatic anthem that turned World Cup Italia 90 into a nationwide Italian restaurant commercial, and convinced millions of British viewers that they too understood opera. Nessun Dorma? More like Nessun Drama… although Dave and Tom may disagree. So grab your Golden Wonder, put the kettle on, and join Dave and Tom as they ask the only question that really matters: Were sports theme tunes better back then… or are we just getting old? "Those goddamn ducks..." This week Dave and Tom are diving head-first into the gabagool-filled jukebox that is The Sopranos Season 1 soundtrack. From the iconic "Woke Up This Morning" by Alabama 3 (they’re from Crewe you know!) that practically whacks you over the head with attitude, to the soulful depths of "Inside of Me", the hypnotic groove of "Mystic Eyes", the rebellious spirit of "I Feel Free", and the lonely highway menace of "State Trooper", the guys break down the songs that helped make Tony's world feel larger than life. Expect plenty of musical wiseguy talk, questionable Italian-American accents, impromptu quizzes, and more bad puns than Paulie Walnuts has tracksuits. 2SSM • Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (2004)

‘’I’ll get a Wimpy’’ In this spine-tingling, synth-dripping episode, Dave and Tom bravely descend into the dangerously underfunded corridors of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, where the beats are as haunted as the hospital and the budget is flatter than Dr. Rick Dagless M.D.’s coke float (sorry Dag). The lads lovingly dissect the iconic soundtrack, including the sultry (and questionably HR-compliant) anthem “One Track Lover,” which proves that romance is alive and well, as long as it’s extremely repetitive and slightly unsettling. Meanwhile, “Scotch Mist” drifts in like a fog of pure ‘80s ambience, or possibly just a side effect of something Dr. Lucien Sanchez left uncapped in the lab. Expect deep dives into other standout tracks that sound like they were composed on a haunted Casio keyboard during a power outage. We’ll also pay tribute to the unforgettable cast: Garth Marenghi himself (author, visionary, dreamweaver, definitely not compensating), Dean Learner (producer, ladies’ man, bearer of mysterious subplots), and the ever-intense Liz Asher, who brings both psychic energy and questionable medical credentials to the mix. 2SSM • 1980s Cartoon Themes

“Thundercats, Thundercats, Thundercats….HOOOOOO!!!” Dust off your VHS tapes and prepare for a nostalgia overload! In this episode, the boys dive headfirst into the gloriously over-the-top world of 1980s cartoon theme tunes. We’re talking heroic guitar riffs, synths that could power a small city, and lyrics that explain the entire plot before the first ad break. Among others, the chaps unravel the epic, thunderous drama of Thundercats (because subtlety was clearly illegal in the '80s), marvel at how Inspector Gadget made “go-go” sound like a legitimate strategy, and groove through the high-octane cool of M.A.S.K (where the theme song is somehow faster than the cars). Oh…and of course, we’ll take a deep dive into DuckTales, the only theme that can make you want to solve mysteries, manage a billionaire’s finances, and dance like Beyoncé at the same time. Expect big tunes, bigger nostalgia, and at least one co-host attempting a dramatic “DuckTales! AWoo-oo!” (badly).

In this final episode of the season, the lads (and Brian) grab a tin, and do some reflecting on the myriad of sounds that made up SSSM Season 2. S2 E10 • Pulp Fiction (1994)

“Zed's dead, baby. Zed’s dead.” In this, the SEASON TWO FINALE - the lads open the briefcase of cool and let that golden glow of 1990s swagger blind them, as they tackle the beast that is the Pulp Fiction soundtrack…aka the mixtape that made you quote from the bible. We’re talking surf rock, country, soul, and a dash of Samuel L. Jackson’s great vengeance and furious anger. From the utterly anthemic “Misirlou” shredding harder than Vincent Vega on a dance floor, to the tender strains of “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” making everyone feel both hopelessly romantic and deeply uncomfortable, this hand-picked soundtrack is a masterclass in making chaos sound classy.
