A Good Christian Father Isn’t Enough

What does faithful Christian fatherhood actually look like in the ordinary grind of family life? In this episode of Everyday Reformation, Brandon Scroggins and Nick Carter sit down with Dylan Heartsill to hear the story of how God began reshaping his understanding of marriage, fatherhood, family worship, church life, and biblical responsibility. Dylan grew up in church, attended Christian school, knew the Bible, and by most outward standards was already a committed Christian husband and father. But as he began examining Scripture more carefully, reading men such as Voddie Baucham and Scott Brown, and learning from faithful men around him, he became convinced that there was a difference between simply being a good Christian man and deliberately taking responsibility for the spiritual culture of his household. That conviction led to repentance, practical changes in parenting, the establishment of regular family worship, a deeper investment in his wife and children, and eventually a move toward a church community where other families were pursuing many of the same convictions. This is not the story of a celebrity Christian or an extraordinary platform. It is the story of ordinary faithfulness: a husband learning to lead, a wife faithfully helping her husband, young children being trained in worship, and a household slowly being shaped by the Word of God. The conversation also explores the difficulty of family worship with young children, biblical discipline, homeschooling, the importance of older and more mature men, choosing a local church, and why consistent obedience often produces fruit that is difficult to see from day to day. Because as the father goes, so goes the family. As the family goes, so goes the church. And from faithful homes, the effects can reach far beyond the front porch. Everyday Reformation exists to apply the truths of God’s Word to all of God’s world—from the family and the church to the public square—under the lordship of Jesus Christ.

Children in Church: Training Worshipers, Not Spectators

Children don’t learn to worship by waiting until they are old enough. They learn to worship by worshiping. In the final episode of our three-part series on preparing the household for worship, Nick and Brandon discuss what it looks like to bring children into the gathered worship of the church—and patiently train them to participate. Beginning with Deuteronomy 31, we trace the biblical pattern of children gathering with God’s people, from the Old Testament assemblies to Paul directly addressing children in his letters to the churches. But the conversation doesn’t stop with why children belong in worship. We get practical. How do you help a toddler develop an attention span? What should you give children during the sermon? What do you do when a child becomes disruptive? Should you take them out—and when should you bring them back? How can family worship throughout the week prepare them for Sunday? Brandon also reflects on doing this all over again with twin toddlers and offers encouragement to parents who sometimes leave church wondering, “Did we get anything out of that?” The goal isn’t perfectly quiet children. The goal is children who learn to hear God’s Word, sing with God’s people, love Christ’s church, and become lifelong worshipers. Take the long view. Every Lord’s Day is another brick in the foundation. This episode concludes our three-part series: Part 1 — Prepare for Sunday Like It Matters | Preparing Your Family for Worship Part 2 — Why Most Fathers Never Start Family Worship Part 3 — Children in Church: Training Worshipers, Not Spectators

Why Most Fathers Never Start Family Worship

Why Most Fathers Never Start Family Worship | Preparing the Household for Worship (Part 2) Many Christian fathers know they should lead their families spiritually. The problem isn't a lack of desire—it's the fear that they aren't qualified. Somewhere along the way, family worship became something many men associated with seminary-trained pastors, perfectly behaved children, and lengthy devotional times. As a result, countless fathers never begin. In this episode of Everyday Reformation, Nick Carter and Pastor Brandon continue their Preparing the Household for Worship series by exploring what family worship really is, why it matters, and how any father can begin leading his household with confidence. Looking at Deuteronomy 6 and Colossians 3, they discuss God's design for weaving His Word into the ordinary rhythms of everyday life. They also introduce a simple, biblical framework for family worship: Read. Sing. Pray. Whether you're a father of young children, newly married, or simply seeking to cultivate a Christ-centered home, this conversation offers practical encouragement to begin—not perfectly, but faithfully. In this episode: Why so many fathers feel unqualified to lead family worship What family worship is—and what it isn't Why ordinary faithfulness matters more than extraordinary moments A simple framework any family can begin using tonight How family worship prepares children for corporate worship You don't need to have all the answers before you begin. Open God's Word. Sing together. Pray together. Then trust God to use ordinary faithfulness to shape an extraordinary household.

Prepare for Sunday Like It Matters | Preparing Your Family for Worship

Sunday morning chaos rarely begins on Sunday morning. Christian families prepare for vacations, weddings, sporting events, and work responsibilities—but many arrive at church rushed, frustrated, and spiritually distracted. What would change if we began treating the Lord’s Day as the best day of the week and prepared for it accordingly? In Part One of our series, Preparing the Household for Worship, Nick and Brandon discuss how fathers can help their families approach Sunday with greater order, anticipation, and delight. They consider why preparation matters, what our weekly habits reveal about what we value, and how simple changes on Saturday can shape the way a household receives Sunday worship. Drawing from Psalm 122, Hebrews 10, and Westminster Shorter Catechism Question 90, they offer three practical areas of preparation: Prepare your home. Prepare your heart. Prepare your family. This is not about creating another legalistic checklist. It is about cultivating a household that treasures gathering with God’s people because it treasures Christ. The episode also explores how families can continue enjoying the Lord’s Day after the benediction through meals, hospitality, conversation, rest, singing, and reviewing what they heard in worship. This week’s challenge: Choose one simple habit that will help your household anticipate Sunday with greater joy. In Part Two, we will turn to family worship and the ordinary practice of reading, singing, and praying together at home.
