Some of the most terrifying stories ever told are true. The Sinister Past uncovers real events from history that read like horror fiction — vanished lighthouse keepers, blood-soaked countesses, plagues that made people dance until they died, and murders that were never solved. Every episode is a journey into a real moment in time when something went terribly, inexplicably wrong. No theories. No speculation. J New episodes every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00 PM EDT. Spring Heeled Jack — Victorian England's Demon — The Sinister Past

London, 1837-1904. For nearly seventy years, witnesses across England report attacks by a tall, thin figure who breathes blue fire, has clawed hands, and can leap over walls and buildings in a single bound. Police investigations find nothing. Military patrols find nothing. The sightings simply stop — and no explanation is ever offered. In this episode, we trace the documented paper trail behind Spring-Heeled Jack, from Mary Stevens's 1837 attack and the Jane Alsop and Lucy Scales cases that made him a national sensation, through the Aldershot and Lincolnshire military incidents of 1877, to the final 1904 sighting that closed the case without ever solving it. The Island of the Dolls — Xochimilco — The Sinister Past

Mexico City. A man finds the body of a drowned girl in the canal near his island. Haunted by her presence, he begins hanging dolls from the trees — hundreds of them, over fifty years. He tells visitors the dolls are alive, that they whisper at night, that they move their heads. In this episode, we trace the fifty-year story of Julián Santana Barrera, the hermit of Xochimilco's Isla de las Muñecas, the disputed origin of the girl he claimed to mourn, and the strange 2001 death that closed the loop on his life in almost exactly the place it began. The Hinterkaifeck Murders — Killed by Someone Already Inside — The Sinister Past

Bavaria, March 1922. A farmer notices footprints in the snow leading to his isolated farmstead — but none leading away. Days later, all six members of the household are found dead, killed one by one with a mattock. The livestock had been fed. Someone stayed in the house for days after the murders. In this episode, we trace the strange warnings that preceded the Hinterkaifeck murders, the single bloody night that ended six lives, and the century of failed investigations — including a 2007 police academy cold case review — that have left Germany's most haunting unsolved crime exactly that: unsolved. Carl Tanzler — The Man Who Loved a Corpse — The Sinister Past

Key West, 1930s. A German radiologic technician becomes fixated on a young tuberculosis patient who never returns his affection. When she dies, he visits her tomb nightly for two years — then steals her body and lives with it for seven more, preserving it with wax, wire, and perfume. In this episode, we trace Carl Tanzler's obsession with Elena de Hoyos from their first meeting through the 1940 discovery that made headlines nationwide, and the genuinely unsettling public reaction that followed — one that had far more sympathy for Tanzler than most would expect. The Great Molasses Flood of 1919 — The Sinister Past

Boston, January 15, 1919. A poorly built, rushed storage tank holding 2.3 million gallons of molasses collapses without warning, sending a wave up to 25 feet high through the streets of the North End at 35 miles per hour. Twenty-one people suffocate in the syrup. A firehouse is crushed. An elevated railway nearly comes down. In this episode, we trace the disaster from the tank's rushed, sabotage-driven construction — built to beat Prohibition's deadline — through the flood itself, the remarkable rescue effort, and the six-year legal battle that made corporate negligence a matter of American law. The Bell Witch of Tennessee — The Sinister Past

Adams, Tennessee, 1817–1821. A frontier family is terrorized for four years by an invisible entity that speaks, sings, quotes scripture, and ultimately claims credit for a man's death — the only case in American history where a spirit has been locally credited with a killing. In this episode, we trace the Bell Witch haunting from John Bell's first sighting of an unidentifiable creature through the entity's escalating attacks on daughter Betsy, the famous (and historically disputed) Andrew Jackson visit, and the poison vial found the morning John Bell died. The Cecil Hotel — Room 428 — The Sinister Past

Los Angeles, 1927–present. A downtown hotel that has hosted at least two serial killers, an unconfirmed brush with the Black Dahlia murder, decades of suicides, and one disappearance — Elisa Lam, 2013 — that defies every rational explanation on record. In this episode, we trace the Cecil Hotel's nearly century-long pattern of death: Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger's independent stays, the elevator footage that went viral worldwide, and the water tank discovery that ended a three-week search. Unit 731 — The Horrors Japan Tried to Erase — The Sinister Past

Manchuria, 1936–1945. A covert Japanese military unit built a secret research complex disguised as a water purification bureau — and used it to conduct years of human experimentation on thousands of prisoners. In this episode, we explore Unit 731 — its commander's postwar immunity deal with the United States, the decades it stayed buried, and the 2002 court ruling that finally acknowledged what happened but denied the victims anything for it.
