048 - King Theoden leads "The Muster of Rohan"

This week we discuss book 5, chapter 3: The Muster of Rohan from "The Return of the King". The Riders of Rohan gather, the Red Arrow arrives, and Théoden prepares to lead 6,000 horsemen into the shadow of Mordor. In this chapter, Merry feels smaller than ever, Aragorn is presumed extremely dead, Dunharrow gets deeply creepy, and the hosts of Rohan ride toward Minas Tirith with very little hope and, somehow, excellent snack energy. Conversation Topics Where is Merry? Merry hangs with Théoden, tells Shire stories, and realizes the world is way too big Dunharrow shows up with creepy roads, fat haunted statues, and very bad mountain vibes Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli enter the Paths of the Dead, so naturally everyone assumes they’re super dead Hirgon arrives with the Red Arrow, which is basically Gondor’s “please help, everything is on fire” text Théoden has to ride for Minas Tirith while Rohan is also actively getting attacked The Dawnless Day begins, which is a pretty aggressive way for Mordor to ruin breakfast Théoden tells Merry to stay home, and Dernhelm immediately says, “Absolutely not, get on the horse” Dunharrow, fey, sundered, wold, Dernhelm, all of it Timestamps 00:00:00 - The Mustard of Rohan begins 00:04:31 - Merry rides with King Théoden 00:09:54 - The Rohirrim arrive at Dunharrow 00:12:08 - Creepy roads, statues, and mountain ghosts 00:19:27 - Aragorn enters the Paths of the Dead 00:23:25 - Hirgon brings the Red Arrow 00:30:41 - Mordor brings the Dawnless Day 00:36:06 - Dernhelm secretly takes Merry to war 00:39:06 - Rohan rides into the deepening shadow 00:40:20 - Debating Tolkien’s timeline and chapter pacing 00:50:25 - The Púkel-men and forgotten civilizations 01:01:19 - Debating the Red Arrow’s big moment 01:10:50 - Dernhelm means secret helmet, apparently 01:13:46 - Food for Thought: chocolate Red Arrows 01:20:25 - Next week: The Siege of Gondor Today's "Food For Thought": The Red Arrow of Gondor Melt milk chocolate, tempering if you want a shiny, firm finish. Dip pretzel rods in chocolate and cool on parchment. If the chocolate gets too thick, gently rewarm it. Melt dark chocolate and add black food coloring if desired. Pipe thick 2-inch lines onto parchment, then drag one side with a fork to shape them like feathers. Make more than you think you’ll need, then freeze until firm. Cut the centers out of large strawberries and dry them well. To assemble, wear food-safe gloves to avoid fingerprints. Trim excess chocolate from the base of each pretzel rod. Working with frozen feathers, gently melt the smooth edge of each feather against a warm plate, then press it onto the pretzel rod and hold until set. Dry the inside of each strawberry again, pipe in a dollop of chocolate, and press the pretzel rod into place, handling as little as possible.Once you are done swearing about chocolate, admire your creations! ---------------------------------------------------- Thanks for watching! These Oatbreakers! ...I'm fired??These are based on thin, crispy lace cookies but with oats added. I used this recipe: https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes... I added some toasted, chopped walnuts for extra texture.A few tips: Make sure your oats are not clumped when you drop them on to the baking sheet. Spread them out evenly or you will have underbaked, chewy spots. While they do spread out while baking, they will not spread into a circle unless you are careful to shape them round. Mine got a little floppy after cooling, so perhaps I didn't bake them long enough or it was just too humid that day. ----------------------------------------------------Thanks for watching! 046 "Minas Tirith" is Gondor's Last Hope

The gang embark on finally reading "The Return of the King", starting with book 5, chapter 1 - "Minas Tirith". Conversation Topics The “12 words or less” Two Towers recap game First impressions: “Minas Tirith” is long, dense, and weirdly thrilling Minas Tirith as an onion-shaped fortress: gates, rings, terraces, and defensive design Gondor’s state of decay, war fatigue, and the “last fortress” vibe Denethor: steward vs king, pride, power, and Gandalf tension Pippin’s interrogation, the three rules (don’t mention Aragorn/Frodo/The Ring), and the oath to Gondor Baragond and the “Prince of the Halflings” celebrity effect inside the city Meal schedules, second breakfast deprivation, and the Shady Maples tangent Refugee evacuation, the beacons, and the painfully small reinforcements arriving Nazgûl dread as a literal aura: hope drains, then floods back Gandalf’s midnight pacing and the “there will be no dawn” ending Timestamps 00:00:00 - local podcast dominance, a very wet recap intro, and the return of the gang 00:01:54 - The 12-words-or-less Two Towers recap game 00:08:18 - Welcome to The Return of the King 00:09:45 - Gandalf and Pippin ride south to Gondor 00:10:41 - A seven-walled fortress, capital, and fading remnant of old Númenor 00:14:29 - No Aragorn, no Frodo, no Ring 00:17:04 - Denethor questions Pippin about Boromir 00:22:27 - Gandalf and Denethor clash over power, duty, and who really serves the fate of Middle-earth 00:25:05 - Pippin meets Beregond, learns about Gondor’s sad meal schedule, and becomes “Prince of the Halflings” 00:30:07 - Minas Tirith evacuates as war closes in and Pippin nearly spills the Aragorn secret 00:33:22 - Pippin meets Bergil, watches Gondor’s reinforcements arrive, and realizes far too few men have come 00:39:28 - There will be no dawn 00:40:16 - Shadowfax logistics, the dead White Tree, and Nazgûl dread 00:55:15 - Gandalf and Denethor’s power game 01:15:18 - Food for ThoughtToday's "Food For Thought": White Cakes of Minas TirithPippin is disappointed with his first meal in Minas Tirith... one measly white cake. Here's a less disappointing cake. Use your favorite white cake recipe or even box mix... the almond cream filling is the star of the show here! Adapted from https://hungryrabbit.com/2012/06/chocolate-cake-w-almond-cream-filling/. I halved the recipe since it was only for 4 small cakes.1/2 cup whole milk1 tblsp almond paste (or almond flour if you don't have almond paste)2 large egg yolks1/4 cup granulated sugar3/4 tsp cornstarch1/8 tsp fine sea salt1 tblsp Amaretto (or 1 tsp almond extract- less if you used almond paste)1/4 cup heavy creamHeat milk and almond paste/flour in a saucepan until just simmering.Whisk together egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a bowl.Very gradually add hot milk into egg yolks while whisking (temper the egg yolks). Add mixture back to saucepan.Cook on medium heat, whisking CONSTANTLY until the mixture thickens and bubbles. This cooks the egg yolks and cornstarch.Add amaretto or almond extract, cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour.Whip your heavy cream to stiff peaks and then fold into almond cream to lighten it up. You might not need to add it all- stop when it's the texture you want. Refrigerate again at least 30 minutes. Thanks for watching! For the premiere of Season 3, Chris, Robbie Jean, Pat, and Laura revisit the nearly four-hour film, argue over what was changed, what was improved, what got absolutely butchered, and why Peter Jackson technically made The One-and-a-Half Towers. 044 - "The Choices of Master Samwise" Will Haunt Him Forever - SEASON TWO FINALE

For the SEASON 2 FINALE, we discuss book 4, chapter 10, "The Choices of Master Samwise", the final chapter of The Two Towers. Thanks for an amazing season! We'll be back for Season Three: "The Return of the King" in Spring, 2026! Conversation Topics The battle between Sam and Shelob Sam's transformation into the true Ring bearer The emotional weight of Frodo’s presumed death The significance of language, translation, and elvish tongues Orc hierarchy, names, and the humanization of the enemy The symbolism of the ring’s increasing power The chapter’s narrative style and Tolkien's portrayal of suffering The poor tale of Uftak's betrayal The setup for The Return of the King and season three Timestamps 00:00 - Intro and season finale celebration 02:50 - Recap of Shelob’s Lair (Chapter 9) 04:40 - Sam’s fight with Shelob: anger, courage, and violence 09:10 - Sam channels elvish language, invokes light 12:04 - Sam takes Frodo’s gear, becomes the lone Ring bearer 16:30 - Final ascent, surrounded by orcs, ring on finger 20:44 - Orc captains’ banter, insights into Mordor’s military state 24:44 - Orc discussion of Frodo’s body, Sam’s exhaustion 27:46 - The orc hierarchy and their views on Shelob 30:58 - Orc discovery of Frodo, Sam’s near-breakdown 36:08 - The impenetrable doors, Sam’s desperate attempt to rescue Frodo 37:48 - Reflection on Shelob as a creature and the emotional ambivalence 43:17 - Shelob’s POV, her instincts, and Tolkien’s storytelling mastery 47:30 - Physicality of Shelob’s attack and Sam’s resilience 49:11 - Frodo’s presumed death, Sam’s heartbreak 55:22 - The overarching war effort, the fate of Middle-earth 59:56 - Reflection on Frodo and Sam’s leadership, and key themes1 :02:10 - Language translation, the ring’s influence 1:09:34 - Uftak’s story, the brutalities of orc life 1:11:51 - Orcs’ perception of Frodo as “precious” 1:13:38 - The “Shelob’s Venom” drink 1:20:42 - Season finale thoughts, foreshadowing for The Return of the King 1:22:24 - Announcing the next season, gratitude, and closing notes Todays "Food for Thought": Shelob's Venom Cocktail After Sam stabbed Shelob, she had green ooze coming from her eye and left a trail of green-yellow slime. I thought it would be fun to drink it. I know it's not the same as her venom but oh well, it makes a better name! I was inspired by an "Ecto Cooler" cocktail that had the right color. Going off that recipe, the base of the drink was a tangerine/orange juice. To make it green, I added blue curacao, which conveniently happens to be orange-flavored. It turned green, but not green ENOUGH, so I did add some food coloring. -Tangerine/orange juice -Blue curacao -Vodka (or any clear liquor) -Green food coloring -Club soda/citrus flavored seltzer I made small shooters for the podcast, but you could play with proportions to make a larger cocktail. Start with about half a glass of juice, then add enough blue curacao to get it pretty green. Add food coloring until you're happy with the color. I used thick gel food coloring and mixed it with gin to thin it and make it pourable. At this point, the drink is very weak, so add as much liquor as you would like to strengthen it. It's also pretty sweet, so I cut it with some seltzer to lighten it up a bit. Cheers! ---------------------------------------------------- Content Warning: Explicit Support the pod on Youtube! @FoolofaTookPodcast Original music for the show composed by Chris Newhard Got a question? The crab legs are entirely extraneous, but they made such perfect spider legs!!I used this recipe: https://sugarspunrun.com/maryland-crab-cake-recipe/#recipe. It was FABULOUS! While they were baking, I steamed some dungeoness crab legs in the oven. To create the spider, I made one extra large crab cake and one smaller one. Once baked (the crab cakes, not me), I pushed candy eyeballs into the smaller one to make the head, and then painstakingly balanced the crab legs around the body. Lucky for us, tonic water happens to glow like moonlight under a black light. Therefore, a gin & tonic in a champagne flute under black light makes a perfect Tower of the Moon.
