The Missing System Behind Church Growth - Ryan Wakefield - Church Marketing Conversations, Episode 5

What does a Church actually need if it wants to consistently reach new people? It may not be another campaign. It may not be another reminder from the pulpit to “invite someone this Sunday.” And it may not be simply posting more on social media. The missing piece may be a repeatable system. In this episode of Church Marketing Conversations, I sit down with Ryan Wakefield, CEO of Church Fuel, to talk about what Churches can do to create a more intentional path from reaching someone for the first time to helping that person actually connect with the Church. We talk about the entire journey: invitation, first contact, preparing for a guest, the first-time guest experience, follow-up, connection, photography, measurement, and the systems that help Churches do these things consistently instead of starting over every week. Ryan also shares practical lessons Church Fuel has learned from working with and studying thousands of Churches. In this conversation, we discuss: • Why simply telling members to “invite someone” isn't a complete invitation strategy • What a repeatable Church invite system can look like • Why your best guest follow-up may begin before the guest ever arrives • How Churches can prepare to host a family before their first Sunday • The difference between being a friendly Church and helping people actually make friends • What Churches should measure if they want to know whether their outreach is working • Why growing your contact list matters • The danger of confusing marketing activity with actual connection • Why photography may be one of the most overlooked tools in Church outreach • The strategic photos Churches should have available for their website, Google Business Profile, social media, and other channels • What Church Fuel has observed when comparing growing Churches with plateaued or declining Churches • How Pastors can think about Church Growth as a repeatable system rather than a collection of disconnected tactics One of the biggest ideas running through this conversation is simple: Church Growth shouldn't depend on remembering to push harder this week. A healthy system helps the Church consistently create opportunities for people to hear about the Church, take a next step, visit, build relationships, and stay connected. That doesn't replace prayer. It doesn't replace faithful preaching. It doesn't replace discipleship, personal relationships, or dependence upon God. It simply helps us become more intentional stewards of the opportunities and people God has already placed in front of us. ABOUT RYAN WAKEFIELD Ryan Wakefield is the CEO of Church Fuel, an organization that helps Churches strengthen their systems and reach more people. Ryan lives in the Kansas City area with his wife, Amy, and daughter, Katelyn, and helped plant Summit Park Church. Church Marketing Conversations Podcast Episode 1 - Church Marketing Essentials with Mitch Whidden

Welcome to the Church Marketing Conversations Podcast! This inaugural episode, titled "Church Marketing Essentials with Mitch Whidden," provides invaluable insights for Churches looking to strengthen their online presence. Hosted by Jeremy G. Woods, CEO of Faith Venture Media, this episode features Mitch Whidden from Mere Agency, a digital marketing expert specializing in Church websites and online engagement. Key Highlights: 1. Importance of an Effective Church Website: Mitch underscores the critical role a church website plays as the first point of contact for many potential visitors. He shares essential tips: Accessible Information: Ensure vital details like parking, service times, dress codes, giving options, and volunteer opportunities are visible and easy to find. Regular Updates: Keep content current. Outdated information, such as events from last year, can deter visitors. Ease of Understanding: Present information clearly and simply, assuming no prior knowledge of the church and aiming for a second-grade reading level. Modern Design Practices: Redesign every 2-5 years to stay up-to-date with website best practices, prioritizing mobile-first design given high mobile device usage. 2. Digital Marketing Principles for Churches: Mitch emphasizes welcoming newcomers, equipping the community, and providing accessible online resources: -Adopts an information architecture approach, akin to library science, ensuring resources are well-organized. -Focuses on online giving, despite transaction fees, noting over 70% of church donations are now online. -Suggests churches offer live streaming services for attendees unable to be physically present. 3. Google Ad Grant: Mitch details the underutilized Google Ad Grant, which offers up to $10,000 monthly in free ads for nonprofits and churches. He outlines: Application Process: Verify nonprofit status and ensure website meets criteria. Ad Categories: Events: Promote key events like Christmas or Easter services. Evergreen Searches: Maintain visibility with ads for searches like "church near me." Online Sermons: Reach wider audiences with content such as sermon series. 4. Practical Advice on Digital Marketing: For churches new to digital marketing, Mitch advises mastering one area at a time, whether it be website management, ad grants, or social media, rather than spreading resources too thin. 5. Maintaining and Optimizing Websites: Content: Use transcription services for sermons to enhance content. Accessibility: Meet ADA standards to accommodate all viewers. Budget-Friendly: Mitch reassures that an effective website doesn’t need a large budget; even a well-maintained DIY site can be impactful. Mitch's Background: From a planned career in law to ministry, Mitch's journey includes starting a Bible study that grew into a church, various job experiences, and a career shift to digital marketing. His work at Mere Agency focuses on digital marketing for churches and nonprofits. Call to Action: Don't miss out on resources discussed in this episode, available in the description.
