    The Lord's Prayer - Intro

The Lord's Prayer begins in a place that should arrest our attention. Before Christ teaches us to ask for bread, forgiveness, or deliverance, He teaches us how to come and what must come first. We come to God as "Our Father," but only because Christ has brought us near. And when we come, the first request on our lips is not about our comfort, our plans, or our needs. It is, "Hallowed be Your name." That petition exposes the order of our hearts. Do we truly desire God's glory above our own? Do our lives agree with the prayer we speak? In Matthew 6:9, Christ gives us more than words to repeat; He gives us a pattern that reveals who God is, who we are in Him, and what should govern the life of every believer: access to the Father through the Son and a life ordered toward His glory.

Prayer Before The Father Pt 2

What does it mean to pray as a child before a Father who already knows what we need? In Matthew 6:7–8, Jesus warns against empty, mechanical prayer that treats words as though they can force God to listen or act. Through the contrast with pagan prayer, the persistence of Christ in Gethsemane, and the Father's perfect knowledge, this message asks us to examine where our confidence in prayer really rests. Is it in the length of our prayers, the intensity of our words, or the way we say them? Or is it in the Father who sees, knows, and cares? These verses also expose our deeper need: our prayers are never perfected by our own righteousness. We come to the Father through Christ, resting not in the quality of our praying but in His perfect righteousness. True prayer is dependence, trust, and communion with the Father through the Son alone.

    Prayer Before the Father

Prayer can look deeply spiritual and still be aimed at the wrong audience. In Matthew 6:5–6, Jesus presses beneath the posture, the place, and the words of prayer to expose the motive of the heart. Why do we pray? Whose approval matters to us? Are we content to be seen by the Father, or do we still crave the recognition of men? Christ's words are searching because they uncover not only past failures, but our continuing need for grace every time we come before God. Yet this passage does more than expose us. It points us to the One whose righteousness never failed. Through Christ, believers are brought near, adopted, and given access to the Father. This message calls us away from performance and into communion, away from self-glory and toward the Father who sees, hears, and receives His children through the Son.

Giving Before the Eyes of God

In Matthew 6:1–4, Jesus turns from the outward shape of righteousness to the motive beneath it. The question is no longer only whether we do what is right, but why we do it and whose approval we seek. Building on Matthew 5:20 and 5:48, Christ shows that kingdom righteousness must surpass external religion and reflect the holiness of our heavenly Father—even in the hidden intentions of the heart. As He addresses giving, Jesus exposes the danger of turning obedience into performance and mercy into a means of gaining recognition. Yet the passage does more than confront hypocrisy; it drives us to Christ. If even our best works are touched by mixed motives, we need a righteousness outside ourselves. In this message, we will see how Christ provides that righteousness and how the gospel frees us to serve quietly, faithfully, and contentedly before the Father who sees and graciously rewards faithfulness.

Responding to Wrong with Biblical Love

What does it mean to love someone who has wronged us? In Matthew 5:43–48, Jesus moves beyond the command to refuse retaliation and calls His people to something far deeper: active, biblical love for enemies. This sermon examines what that love is, what it is not, and why it cannot depend upon whether the other person deserves it or returns it. Christ directs us to the goodness of our Father, who gives real providential kindness even to the evil and unjust, and then confronts us with the perfect standard of His righteousness. That standard exposes our sin and leaves no room for self-righteousness, but it also drives us to Christ, the One who perfectly loved His enemies and gave Himself to reconcile sinners to God. In Him, believers are justified, and by His Spirit they are progressively transformed to reflect the family resemblance of their Father in heaven before others.

Patient and Graceful Response to Wrong

What does Christ require of us when we are insulted, wronged, inconvenienced, or treated unfairly? In Matthew 5:38–42, Jesus confronts our natural desire to retaliate and reveals a righteousness that reaches far deeper than outward restraint. The command to turn the other cheek, surrender personal rights, go the second mile, and give generously exposes how tightly we cling to our dignity, time, possessions, and sense of justice. Yet Christ is not abolishing justice or calling His people to weakness. He is teaching us to distinguish righteous judgment from personal vengeance and to entrust ourselves to the God who judges perfectly. This sermon examines the Old Testament background, the true purpose of "an eye for an eye," and the heart-level demands of kingdom righteousness, ultimately pointing us to Christ—the One who perfectly fulfilled this righteousness, suffered without sinful retaliation, and gave Himself for His enemies.

    Every Word Before God

Matthew 5:33–37 exposes the insufficiency of outward righteousness by showing that God requires truthfulness from the heart. Jesus does not correct the Law but false interpretations that allowed people to manipulate oaths while preserving an appearance of integrity. Because heaven, earth, Jerusalem, and our lives belong to God, every word is spoken before Him. Therefore, Christ commands His people to let their yes be yes and their no be no. Scripture presents God as true and His redeemed people as those who increasingly reflect His truthfulness. Yet this command also exposes our inability, for deceit and manipulation flow from sinful hearts. Our hope is not in trying harder, but in Christ, the Faithful and True One, who perfectly fulfilled the righteousness we lack, bore the guilt of liars at the cross, and credits His righteousness to believers. By His Spirit, He now produces truthful speech in those He has redeemed.

    The Covenant the King Guards

In Matthew 5:31–32, Jesus continues exposing the shallow righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees by confronting the misuse of divorce. Deuteronomy 24 regulated divorce in a fallen society; it did not command or celebrate covenant-breaking. Christ takes us back to creation, where marriage is God's joining of one man and one woman in a one-flesh covenant ordinarily intended for life. Jesus rejects casual divorce while recognizing sexual immorality as a genuine exception, not a command to divorce. Scripture also addresses willful desertion in 1 Corinthians 7 and requires pastoral judgment in difficult cases. Civil paperwork cannot determine righteousness before God. Yet this passage is not without hope. Christ receives repentant covenant-breakers, protects those sinned against, and calls His people to faithful obedience. Christian marriage ultimately points beyond itself to Jesus Christ, the faithful Bridegroom who loves His church, gave Himself for her, and never abandons His covenant people.
