WCPT 820 Interview: Ohio State Rep. Dani Isaacsohn (D)

Richard Chew talks to Ohio State Rep. Dani Isaacsohn (D-Cincinnati), minority leader of the Ohio House of Representatives. SUMMARY Democratic Momentum in Ohio- Isaacsohn notes a growing momentum for Democrats in Ohio, which is reflected in both polling data and candidate experiences on the ground.- He highlights the popularity of former Senator Sherrod Brown, noting his long-standing focus on populism, affordability, and housing. (Brown is a 2026 candidate for Senate, having lost his Senate seat in 2024.) - Ohio gubernatorial candidate Dr. Amy Acton is described as a rising force in the state who has built significant trust and energy even in deep southeast Ohio regions like Meigs and Vinton counties. The Affordability Election- Isaacsohn frames the upcoming election as being fundamentally about the cost of living, including groceries and gas.- He contrasts Dr. Acton's background in public health and her experience with homelessness against the billionaire status of Republican opponent Vivek Ramaswamy.- The discussion emphasizes that voters are looking for candidates who possess empathy and a genuine understanding of economic struggles.Connecting Rural and Urban Needs- Isaacsohn argues that health care outcomes in Appalachia and rural areas are directly linked to the costs and availability of care in urban cores like Cincinnati and Columbus.- He suggests that Democrats must build coalitions by addressing shared concerns regarding the pharmaceutical industry and insurance companies.- The strategy involves finding common ground with various movements to address systemic issues that affect all Ohioans.A New Economic Growth Agenda- Isaacsohn asserts that rising costs are the result of intentional policy choices rather than accidental occurrences.- He criticizes the use of taxpayer money for billionaire subsidies instead of investing in infrastructure that lowers energy bills.- The Democratic agenda focuses on driving down costs through increased housing construction and expanding clean energy sectors like solar and wind.- Isaacsohn concludes that business rankings alone do not matter unless they translate into improved literacy, lifespan, and job quality for everyday citizens. SUMMARY Democratic Outreach in North Carolina- Clayton discusses her strategy of traveling extensively throughout the state to engage voters.- The party is focusing on western North Carolina counties like Polk and Rutherford that were recently impacted by Hurricane Helene.- Clayton emphasizes the importance of showing up in person rather than just talking about issues to build trust with constituents. Addressing Corporate Monopolies and Costs- The discussion covers the impact of high utility rates and North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson's fight against Duke Energy's proposed 18 percent rate hike.- Clayton notes that corporate consolidation and monopolies contribute to skyrocketing costs for the average American. Hurricane Relief and Fiscal Responsibility- Clayton reports that less than 15 percent of federal funds have been released to western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene.- She criticizes the Republican-led legislature for fiscal irresponsibility, specifically regarding the allocation of funds toward private school vouchers.- The lack of available state funds is attributed to prioritizing voucher programs over emergency relief for displaced residents. The 100 County Strategy- The North Carolina Democratic Party is implementing a district tour to combat Republican propaganda in rural areas.- Clayton explains that running candidates in every district is essential so voters always have a choice on their ballot. Future Goals and Party Engagement- The party's immediate priorities include electing a U.S. senator and maintaining Justice Anita Earls on the state Supreme Court.- Clayton encourages citizens to get involved via ncdp.org through phone banking or volunteering.- The conversation concludes with a focus on building strength at the state level to eventually influence national politics. Richard Chew is joined by Mike Nellis, Democratic strategist and host of “Endless Urgency with Mike Nellis.” Summary- Nellis addresses an ongoing investigation by the Department of Justice and the House Judiciary Committee into his digital fundraising firm. They argue that internal disputes following primaries should be set aside to focus on general election victories. - Nellis criticizes "naysayers" and individuals who seek media attention by criticizing their own party.- He announces his transition into a formal leadership role within Chicago's political structure; he will be taking over as the committeeman for Ward 32, succeeding Ald. WCPT 820 Interview: Melanie Nathan of African Human Rights Coalition

Richard Chew is joined by Melanie Nathan, South African-born human rights lawyer who directs the African Human Rights Coalition. She highlights the severe human toll caused by the Trump administration's deportation practices.  Key points:- Individuals are often sent to third countries where they have no connections - There is a significant risk that deported persons will face persecution or torture in receiving countries because those nations may lack the capacity or legal framework to provide asylum or protection  - Once individuals leave American shores, the Trump administration effectively avoids responsibility for their treatment in foreign jurisdictions- Many African nations criminalize LGBTQ+ identities, which can lead to extreme violence   Key quote:"It's like the perfect storm because when this administration took over, it stopped a lot of the funding for the resources that embraced services needed. For example, UNHCR, which is the major protection agency providing services and resources on the continent of Africa, lost an enormous amount of funding, and then there was none of this backup funding for safe shelters and this kind of thing, so I know that they had to reduce their operation to the tune of about 30 percent. And so you're just having a massive humanitarian crisis. It has always been there as a crisis, but now it is so much worse -- HIV clinic services, trauma services. It's just terrible."
