    Let me start by clearly stating that the South African tourism and hospitality industry is neglecting South Africans. Let me explain. Ok you’re back from your holiday and you’ve likely started to count the costs, neh. it cost a little more than what you expected. For years, South Africa has boasted stunning natural beauty, diverse cultures, and world-class tourism experiences. But the questions that have for some time been bubbling under are: are these tourism treasures now becoming a luxury only for the wealthy? Are these experiences even meant for both locals? For example, a growing segment of hotels in Cape Town are targeting foreign tourists almost exclusively, and thus it is becoming increasingly unaffordable for South Africans—middle class and up. This is particularly true of the V&A Waterfront, which is said to be looking at pursuing a strategy of owning more and more of its hotels going forward. For context: In 2023, total expenditure incurred on domestic trips was about R57.9 billion. Day trip spending amounted to about R20,2 billion and overnight trip spending of R37,6 billion. 2023 Total expenditure was mostly driven by high expenditure on ‘other mostly undefined spending’ (R13,6 billion), followed by shopping (R11,7 billion) in 2022, while in 2023 total expenditure during domestic tourism trips was mostly driven by shopping (R18,6 billion), followed by domestic transport spending (R17,9 billion).

    I am in Knysna, a small town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, which forms part of the Garden Route region. Now the Garden Route district is one of six districts located in the Western Cape. Contributing R45billion to the western cape and SA’s GDP, This region includes towns & municipalities like Bitou, which is home to Plettenberg bay, and then you get places like Knysna, George, Mossel Bay, Hessequa , Kannaland and Oudtshoorn municipalities All these form part of the garden route, an area that the N2 road that starts in the EC / WC border and goes all the way to Cape town. So why am I making this piece? Well, while being here on holiday, I asked myself a simple question: what drives the economies of these towns? Surely it can’t just be tourism; what does the future hold for them, and where will the growth come from here?

    The thing is that Lesotho has been having internal conversations about reclaiming land that was annexed by the by the Afrikaner/Boer and British republics from its territories roughly 140 years ago. The only issue is that those republics don’t exist anymore and with time, lines on a map become permanent and harder to redraw. The ongoing debate is Lesotho wants to reclaim all of Free State province, which at 130,000 square kilometres and is more than four times the size of the kingdom, as well parts of four other provinces bordering the landlocked state. Large parts of the population in these areas are from the same Basotho nation which also makes up Lesotho's 2 million-strong population. In fact, there are around twice as many(around 4m) Basotho who live in South Africa as in Lesotho. What are your views on this ?

    Dear South Africans, you are not going crazy; airline prices are high; actually, noo no no no, they are very high, and there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye. So BusinessTech ran a study on how local airline prices in South Africa have skyrocketed over the last two years, and let me tell you, I feel like I’ve been vindicated for booking flights and then waking up in the early morning in a cold sweat and I’m going haaah aaah maan, I feel scammed. So the analysis was quite simple; they took the average round-trip flight prices between Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban across airlines such as FlySafair, Lift, Airlink, and SAA. The prices for flights were compared in November 2022 and 2024 for dates over the December holidays. Actually, before we get into what the study showed, drop in the comment how you’re going home and how much its going to cost you. Also, maybe tell us how much December flights are costing you this year and also tell us when you booked them. I want to see something.

    Switzerland has a dirty little secret that many African’s have wondered about for some time and some have known for a very long time. Why is this country so rich? Switzerland is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, with residents enjoying the highest mean wealth per adult. How is this possible for a small mountainous country with no access to the sea and so few natural resources? The roots of modern Swiss banking institutions are based on the banks created in the early 19th century to finance major construction projects. One of these banks was Kreditanstalt Bank, created by railway baron Alfred Escher. The bank was later rebranded as Credit Suisse and became one of the largest investment banks in the world. And that’s where our story starts. With its banking secrecy laws and favourable financial environment, Switzerland had been the perfect place for African leaders and corrupt corporations and politicians to stash their cash. For a long time, Switzerland was considered a safe haven for the ill-gotten gains of many dictators, not least because of its banking secrecy. In recent years, it has been a leader in fighting dirty money According to World Bank estimates, billions of dollars disappear via the pockets of corrupt government officials in developing countries every year. As one of the biggest offshore financial centres in the world, Switzerland used to be a great hiding place for illicit funds. However, knowing that such a reputation would harm its image, the Swiss government introduced its first law against illicit assets in 1986. Since then, Switzerland has taken a leading role in the freezing and restitution of such funds, the process of which is called asset recovery. Nevertheless, the past keeps on catching up with Switzerland.

    The South African National Defense Forces is currently fighting or actually let me use the correct term, they are engaged in peacekeeping missions in DRC & more recently have started a withdrawal from northern Mozambique, military missions that have and are costing the country billions but there is an important national and regional security reason for this and I want us to discuss it. So In this video even though its going to be a little bit longer than the usual I want you to stick around because you will leave here knowing a little bit more about the world around you. We as South Africa are currently and recently active in two conflict zones an you should probably know a little more about. As of earlier this year, we had around 1495 troops in northern Mozambique fighting even though we are scaling back from fighting an ISIS breakaway insurgency as well as 1200 troops engaged in a peace mission in Eastern DRC That’s 2700 troops in active conflict zones. Even as recently as Oct 31st The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) was allocated an additional R3.6 billion by the finance minister in the latest ‘mini budget’ tabled on Wednesday, but many in the defence industry still feel that our army is underfunded and battling to meet its mandate. So with all that said lets get into nuts and bolts of these conflicts and see what their current state is and also how we are fairing and why they started in the first place.

Last week I tagged along to Switzerland with Gayton McKenzie, the Minister of Sports, Arts & Culture in South Africa. The Minister was in Lausanne to undertake two key meetings, one with IOC around South Africa's 2036 olympics and another meeting with the FIVB (World Volleyball Federation) for possibly hosting the 2027 Championships in SA.
