Stop Fixing Five Things at Once

Hey, it's Coach Mike from Mighty Oak Athletic in Westmont. Quick question: if you could only fix ONE thing about your kid's routine — the screens, the snacking, the homework procrastination, the bedtime battles — which would you pick? Trick question. You shouldn't pick any of them. You should pick training. Researchers call it a keystone habit — one habit that sets off a chain reaction. Charles Duhigg wrote about it in The Power of Habit. People who exercise in the morning eat a healthier lunch. Sore legs make the salad easier than the burger. And it gets weirder. Two Australian researchers, Oaten and Cheng, tracked people who started exercising and found they used their credit cards less and procrastinated less at work. Nothing about a workout tells your brain to spend less money. But exercise strengthens self-regulation — and that muscle shows up everywhere. I've watched this with kids for over a decade. A kid starts training twice a week, and a month later he's asking what to eat before a session. She starts going to bed earlier on training nights. Parents tell me the homework fights got quieter — and nobody lectured anybody. The bar doesn't lie. Visible progress teaches kids that effort compounds. And "I'm someone who trains" is an identity that outlasts any sports season. So don't play whack-a-mole with five habits. Fix one. Make it training. Then watch what else changes. This is Coach Mike — be strong to be useful. Get full access to Mighty Oak Athletic Free Newsletter at mightyoak.substack.com/subscribe
