Ep 35: Practice Makes Perfect – Hosting Students in your Practice

In this episode, Charles and Natasha discuss something that affects almost every practice at some stage – having students in the building! We hear from three individuals who are putting in their best efforts to maximise this enjoyment for students and practices. First up is Natasha’s old classmate Kieran O’Mahony, practice owner of GlenVets and the driving force behind the innovative GlenVets TY Academy program. He sits down with Natasha to talk about why the program was set up, along with how they select and prepare the chosen students. Following Kieran is Andrea Reagan, Vet Nurse Placement Officer at UCD, who explains what students are expected to be able to do at different stages of the college’s Veterinary Nursing course and the responsibilities that vet practices have towards vet nurse students on placement. Finally, Emmet Kelly, Vet and Module Coordinator for the CEMS Program in UCD, speaks to Natasha about the pressures that are in place in busy practices and what skills students should be expected to develop at the practice. We also cover the various diseases prone to spreading, now that the New Year has arrived, including BTV-3 and Bird Flu. Don’t miss this week’s VetVoice section, where we hear from Frank O’Sullivan, vet at Dublin Zoo, who is involved in conservation. Ep 33: The Fantastic Four - Women in Leadership

In this episode, Natasha and Amy meet the women who lead all the principal veterinary roles across Ireland, at the moment. Charles can be heard, too, sitting down with Natasha to explain the recent outbreak of bluetongue in Ireland. Of these leading women, first up is Jackie Layng, Leadership Coach and former Chief Veterinary Officer of Village Vets, who reveals the importance of opening yourself up to greater learning opportunities as a veterinary professional and finding purpose in supporting other people to maximise their potential, through leadership coaching. Next is Jane Pigott, the fifth female President of Veterinary Ireland, who talks about having the opportunity to advocate for the veterinary profession and influencing veterinary legislation in the political landscape. Rachel Brown follows, currently serving her second term as President of the Veterinary Council of Ireland, and shares how to have the confidence to step up and get involved, along with the difficulties women face in pushing themselves forward, while working in male-dominated areas. Finally, hear from Dr. June Fanning, Chief Veterinary Officer at the Department of Agriculture, who discusses being the first female CVO for the Department and how important it is to fail and try again. Don’t miss this week’s VetVoice section, where we hear from two vets Diarmuid O’Conor and Maura Naughton. This episode is sponsored by Norbrook.
